@BrooklynRye NEU EA decisions used to come out in December, but this year NEU status page clearly indicates that the EA decisions will come out by February 1st.
I think this is a change. It is understandable and probably a smart move given NEU is often a backup school and they would want to pick up their ED1 & ED2 kids first.
S17 was accepted into NEU EA with a big merit award being from Colorado with reasonably high stats and test scores. S17 and I were impressed by NEU Honors welcome day and enjoyed visiting the campus, but he ended up choosing UT Austin.
S got an email from James Madison today that they received 1500 more EA applications than last year and decisions will be delayed until they work through all of the extra paperwork.
@elena13 congrats to your son! @payn4ward Although my S had Feb 1 duly entered into his spreadsheet for the notification date, I hadn’t really processed it until now. That’s quite late for EA!
Can others kids who applied to NEU EA find where to check in their portals for whether financial aid information has all been received?
@JBStillFlying I forgot to call the FA director to get the lowdown on FA. I will find out for both the FAFSA and CSS regarding retirement balances, contributions, and home assets. I also have a vacation home which certainly doesn’t help my cause and count against me. Hoping the tuition exchange and targeting schools where DS’s stats are beyond the 75% will help.
@mindatwork Interesting about JMU. I asked D about it and she said she did not get an e-mail from JMU. Decisions are not due until 1/15 originally, which seems like plenty of time.
Kiddo wore a fake handlebar mustache and the spirit gum wasn’t quite properly applied in the first act so he kept having to try to surreptitiously pin it back in place. Two actors forgot or flubbed lines. The skull on the study table rolled off into the audience when the table was being moved between scenes.
So, no unrecoverable disasters.
Kiddo got named most valuable actor in a ceremony just before the show. There was some crying, but not on his part. Yet. I suspect that will happen at the cast party. Last fall show, senior year, etc.
I continue to read/hear mixed things. The most consistent, however, is that EA results come out on the heels of ED. The reasoning, considering that there is now an ED2 as well, is that despite the binding nature of ED2, on a “holistic” basis, the ED2 kids were not really committed to NEU. It’s a strategic move after not getting into their first choice. There are some, maybe a substantial number, of EA applicants for whom NEU truly is a first choice. Sometimes there are just reasons for the non-binding app, most notably finances. NEU IS my S19’s first choice, but we cannot risk being locked into an FA package and so went the EA route. Hoping S19 is viewed for what he is in terms of his desire to attend. In any case “by 2/1” means pretty much anytime before 2/1, right…lol?
D19 had 70 minute interview yesterday. I asked her how it went. She said it’s fine. I could not get more details than that. On the other hand I thought it’s no point to dwell on that. At least her EA app is completed now. I am hopeful but I think it’s time to move on and think more about the RD round.
The winter weather finally came to us. Snow on top of freezing rain. S19 meets his MIT interviewer in two hours. I hope none of us gets into an accident!
Our fall show is amazing! It’s about the factory girls who got radiation poisoning while painting watch dials with glow-in-the-dark paint, and one woman in particular who fought to get compensation from her employer, eventually leading to OSHA etc.
All D19 and D21’s friends were in the audience last night so there was a lot of whooping, whistling and cheering at curtain call, which was great after a very intense and sometimes grim story. Then, all the actors meet the audience in the lobby in an explosion of hugs/flowers/photos. I stood off to the side and watched–feeling so lucky that my girls are part of this community . . . and then I had to distract myself from the thought that D19 will be leaving it.
Does anyone here know anything about Maryland state schools? My son looked at none but now my husband is bringing up college park again. I know they have neuroscience but it isn’t the type of school he really wants. He wants that suburban feel, not city. He also really wants a smaller school but is still applying to Virginia Tech. I’m torn because I know my husband is coming at it from a coast aspect and he is just like what would it hurt if he just applied and had that knowledge. I don’t think any other Maryland schools have neuroscience.
@DCNatFan Yes they have a PHD program and we’ve been to that campus for DI but it’s really close to home and considered a commuter college (I think). I just looked at the maryland schools again and none of them are what our son is looking for so I’m just going to have to tell my husband he needs to let go of the state school idea. Honestly Maryland is awful! LOL - Just my opinion, don’t flame me… after living in NJ and NC and being so close to Virginia, Pennsylvania and NY!!
Oh and that would be ‘cost’ not ‘coast’ in my post above! LOL
@Kona2012. I agree. We are also in MD. We made D19 apply to UMD even though she didn’t like the school plus it is is only 20 minutes from home. We also toured UMBC, Towson and Salisbury. She also applied to Towson as in-state safety since UMD is no guarantee.
We used to live in VA and I’m now regretting ever leaving (so many great in-state options there).
@BrooklynRye , re ED2. My D19 is applying ED at NYU and we asked two different reps (yeah yeah I know lol) about ED2 and both said it exists for those who are able to present a better case a bit later, if they want a later test score and /or their 1st semester transcript included. Both were adamant it did not prejudice the applicant and said there is no discernible difference between the offer % for ED1 and ED2. However, I can perfectly see why a college would approach it the way you described for NEU, and in fact that’s exactly why my daughter will end up ED2 elsewhere if she gets a reject from NYU.
I can’t help thinking that surely EA applications at colleges that offer both ED and EA might be seen that way too though. As in, “my application is ready for my ED school so I’m going to send it to a few EA schools too”.
