Thanks, @zipstermom, we shall see, since it does impact the seniors. but at least it wan’t affect their graduation…
S19 graduated today. I’m proud of myself that I didn’t get teary-eyed. It helped that some of the speeches were quite funny. After this he disappeared to celebrate with his friends.
I confess with all the madness going on with Columbine anniversary in Colorado I couldn’t stop thinking about how tempting the graduation ceremony would be for some psycho with an automatic weapon. But there were metal detectors and bag searches at the entrance, so I could relax a bit.
D19 and friends have decided to binge watch all the classic high school movies before graduation (grease, Ferris bueller, etc). Cute idea!
@MWolf , sorry. Ugh.
My D competed in her state championships today and actually came in third place- she’s not usually a podium girl, so it was an amazing way to end her season!
@milgymfam , congrats!
It’s “that season” and my Facebook feed is a progression of HS and college grad and prom pictures… I guess I’m more aware of it this year because D19 is in this year’s batch. it’s so lovely to see everyone’s children growing up and moving out into the world.
We had the area theatre awards ceremony last night. Our school was nominated for a bunch of awards but shut out of the winner’s circle. It was quite frustrating. It wouldn’t have been so bad if there wasn’t shenanigans. Two very wealthy private schools in the area apparently share drama departments. They submitted two plays, one by the boys’ school and one by the girls’ school. But the same actors were in both plays, and in some cases nominated for both in the same category.
Ah, well, it’s a private organization and if they want to favor wealthy schools then its their prerogative.
Congrats to the kids who’ve already graduated!! That seems so early! 2 more weeks for us.
Congrats to the kids who did well in state sports meets! Very exciting, great results!
I’m glad the kids had fun at Prom! I sort of wish they did the Prom senior year at our school, but not having to worry about that as parents of a senior has been nice. We do a less formal senior night and I think that captures 75% of the spirit of Prom, just no dresses, tuxes, proposals, pictures. The event itself is very similar.
Son19’s team won their league championship, one of only 2 times in the last 25 years, so that was cool to see. My son was asked to compete in an event he normally doesn’t do because the team needed the points. He did it and placed top 3, but got hurt and it impacted the rest of his events and he did not PR in anything. He is close to breaking a couple of school records, but it only counts when they are “officially timed and sanctioned events”. So he was happy he helped the team win, but frustrated he couldn’t get the results he wanted. He’s got a couple of chances left to try to break the records, but he needs to heal up fast. I’ll say 50/50 % chance at best.
Good news is his relay team qualified for Nationals , so he’ll get to go back with that group even if he doesn’t move on in his individual events.
We have Senior Awards night this week, last day of classes this week, and big track meet Saturday. Son19 is happy to be done with school academically and is looking forward to the end of the year now. Lots of parties to go to !
Graduation was yesterday. It was so nice to have had our reception done last weekend so we could just enjoy this weekend. Saturday we ran the gauntlet of 7 receptions (DD did more)…so much food! DD gave her valedictorian speech with one of the salutatorians and it was entertaining. The other sal whipped up her own speech after the Tuesday announcement and did a good job too. DD’s speech was more about memories and the other speech more about the future so it worked out to be a nice combo.
Great update and hope @RightCoaster son heals up fast !
I am thinking … food, balloons, cake, and flower …for Sunday… what did I miss ??
End of school year is tiring.
And I am picking up S17 this afternoon. S17 dropped off a bag of … laundry… already.
I see Piles of laundry next few days.
@bjscheel Congratulations!
@SJ2727 I know and I have known these 19’ kids from when they were in diapers and toddler soccers.
@ninakatarina Sorry to hear about the shut out. ;-(
@payn4ward when son17 came home recently I needed to wash all of his clothes, sheets, towels etc. Everything. Everything smelled like a “boy’’s college suite” which is a nice way of saying beer, Doritos, sweat, Chinese food, pizza all in one. Terrible!
We are just doing a small family party for a bit at our house before we head out onto the “3019 grad party circuit” for numerous days. That is going to be tiring.
We plan on just getting some Italian food from a local place that offers party trays, and we’ll have some drinks and dessert. Pretty easy for us, however son19 has requested we host a party later in the summer before everyone heads off to school. For a while he was talking with his friends about trying to organize some sort of group trip with his friends, or use our house in the mountains for a retreat for a few days with his buddies. But there has been no mention of that lately and I’m not going to inquire
congrats @bjscheel on graduation!
Tonight is the ceremony. Just to keep things interesting, it is snowing.
We are celebrating D19s graduation with her best friend, and are trying to put together a collage of photos of the two of them together. Since they’ve been BFs since kindergarten, that’s a lot of photos. However, we do have their photos together at elementary and middle school graduations, as well as at assorted other important events.
Today was DS19’s last exam. He has completed his HS academic career and I am struggling a bit. Graduation practice on the football field Fri, official practice at the venue on Tues after Memorial Day and Graduation on June 1.
@carolinamom2boys I’m feeling the same way. Last week S19 played probably his last lax game ever (lost in championship, so it was really bittersweet). He’s played with some of the kids since he was 8-9 y/o! He finished school/exams a week ago, went to his first graduation party Sunday night, MIL arrived last night, Senior Awards are tonight and graduation is Thursday morning. He’s one of about 20 in his class who have been at this school since kindergarten. Tomorrow that group (the 13 Year Club) puts on their graduation gowns and walks the halls of the grammar school. With each thing, my heart gets heavy. Though I still have two younger kids, they are both going/go to different h.s so this is our last year (15 years total) in this school community.
So, for the last full day of classes today, my kid has…conjunctivitis!
He is enjoying having an excuse to wear an eyepatch to school. He has supplemented the eyepatch with a poofy hat and black turtleneck and he is being Hamlet the Pirate, because Hamlet actually is a pirate at some point during the play, I never noticed it until he pointed it out to me.
I love my goofball son.
Last track meet. Hailing and windy and only one runner made it to state. Last track banquet. S19 gave the senior speech and honored the coach who makes me crazy but has, apparently, been a very positive influence in the end. And now last day of school. D21 has two and a half more weeks but seniors are done today. Graduation tomorrow.
Lots of logistics to figure out with awards ceremony in the morning then senior picnic then graduation rehearsal and then the ceremony. Not sure about saving versus not saving seats or trying to get there early. We have grandparents to pick up and drive to school because parking will be difficult. I feel like this ceremony is going to be a big event but not very personal and S19 will probably be with his friends on the football field afterwards being all emotional and taking photos. It’s not really a night made for reflection on the parents’ part since I think it’s going to be a madhouse with 700 kids. Just hoping S19 really soaks it in and has a great time. And that we get one family photo!
Thursday is practice for the final assembly and the senior picnic. Friday is the final assembly, they are expected to wear gowns but not caps and will be dismissed around noon. The actual graduation ceremony is next Friday.
S19 has one more week but the last 2 weeks are an ‘internship’ that the seniors set up. He’s out on a boat for 2 days now learning about sampling fish (gill-netting and then taking measurements). He’s shadowing a fish research team for his 2 weeks.
This weekend will be insane as he is competing in a massive multi-sport relay race. He organized a HS team for the event. He was invited to join a ‘elite super-star’ HS team but I (groan) convinced him to set one up with his club. Unfortunately his club mates are slackers and flakes–except S and one other guy. Then that other guy jumped ship and joined the ‘super stars’. Treachery! So it will be kind of fun and kind of sucky at the same time. Honestly it’s straight out of some movie with the studly, tanned, movie-star looking team of popular kids on one side and bad news bears (S19’s team) tripping over themselves. I predict it will be painful for S19. I try to tell him that club loyalty is worth a lot, but he’s not convinced. On the bright side, H and I also organized a old foggies team with our closest friends. It should be a huge fun weekend camping party.
