@3scoutsmom Thank you
Thanks for the advice @VickiSoCal . She is in the accelerated algebra II class, so she just had geometry last year. That wasnât the problem. She seemed to think one section on the math was âeasy,â but another was much more difficult for her. I donât understand why they do âcurve grading,â it seems to make everything so much more complicated.
This weekend she is going to do a full ACT test at home and see how it goes. The speed on the ACT should be OK - sheâs a super quick reader and works at a good pace. We also like the fact that math only counts for a quarter of the total score on the ACT, as opposed to half on the SAT. Either way, it looks like itâs going to be a rough couple of months (at least).
Is anyone else unable to access the PSAT scores page on the college board site? I can load every other page on the site but that score page. I wanted to look at my D20s PSAT results from last year.
They cover roughly the same math, but the SAT questions are more reasoning oriented while the ACT problems are moth like math homework. I tell my students if they are doing and complicated calculations on the SAT that feel like a calculator would be useful, they are doing it wrong. The problem should be 90% staring at it and figuring out what you are supposed to see and 10% calculation.
@janiemiranda no problems here the psat page say scores are coming but I can scroll down and see past SAT and PSAT scores.
@janiemiranda last night it was glitching all over.
@Dancingmom518 " We are thinking of looking at a prep course for the ACT instead, though no one at her school takes that test"
I highly recommend you try the ACT. Who cares what people at her school take. The ACT is the more popular test across the country and works for some kids better than SAT (and the opposite can be true).
To be honest, the CB is doing a HORRIBLE job at administering the new SAT as seen from all the scandals this year. I think the Oct 24 PSAT is going to be another scandal - Losing 80 points for 1 wrong? Seriously?
Yes @suzyQ7 I was also thinking of all the scandals this morning. We are definitely looking into the ACT. Thanks, everyone, for your words of encouragement!
Not pleased that my DD had to take the test on 10/24!
Well if Oct 24 was very bad I am now totally vindicated for ticking off the cross country coach. I had my kid skip xc county championships to take the regular Saturday test instead of the alternate because I am always skeptical of alternates.
@janiemiranda I was able to see my Dâs scores from last year. At first I tried it I couldnât get to it, but I finally clicked on her name in the top right corner, selected PSAT/NMSQT⊠and it brought me to her scores from last year and a note about this yearâs scores coming soon. Good Luck.
@3scoutsmom Is there a NMS/PSAT thread for the October sitting on CC? I canât find one.
My daughter had a real shot at National Merit, but she was a 10/24 test taker. The only thing going for her is we are in a lower cutoff state. We canât get her scores until next week.
@suzyQ7 There wasnât a 80 point drop (remember the sections are worth 760 for the PSAT), but it still wonât make people happy. Also, the SAT was actually taken by more students (by over 150K) than the ACT (1st time in a while) looking at the class of 2018 statistics.
@suzyQ7 I havenât seen one but perhaps you could start one so we can moved future discussion of this thread.
In this house we donât do alternate test dates. And hereâs why. And this is totally anecdotal, but burned once, forever shy.
D17 social studies AP scores:
APHUG- 5
APUSH- 5
APEuro- 3
APMicro- 5
APMacro- 5
Euro was taken on the alternate date. YMMV
Iâll just chime in to say try the ACT. We have just found the SAT equating to be all over the place. My daughter did great last year on the PSAT, would make the cutoff in our state, but took the August SAT and thought it was very easy-unfortunately she was right and the curve was horrible. She dropped 50 points from the previous yearâs psat. She took the October ACT never having taking the test before or a pre-ACT and scored a 35. No scores for this yearâs PSAT for us yet.
Which date did the majority students take for psat? DSâ school all took on a Wednesday at school, I think (and hope!) it is not the alternative one.
Is alternative psat the same or different from the main one? If it is different, why would they have a harsher âcurveâ? I remember people discussing about the harsh curve of June 2018 SAT.
The primary test date was Wed Oct 10th. The alternate test date was Wed Oct 24th. The Saturday test date was Oct13 th. All the tests were different so they have to equate them. They have released the Oct 10th and Oct 24th curves and they are dramatically different. Theyâve said the Oct 13th isnât available.
@makemesmart both the 10th and 24th were Wednesdays. The alternate test is different but should have been the same general difficulty, instead it was much easier so it had a much harder curve.
