Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

@VryCnfsd I wonder how that happened? I just checked my S’s CB account and his score is not yet available.

@VryCnfsd Nothing there for my D20. Weird.

@ShrimpBurrito @janiemiranda Sorry it didn’t work for you. I don’t know what is going on.

Site was down when I read that and now I can get in and scores are not there. Maybe a glitch and they fixed it. Happened 3 years ago and a bunch of people got them early.

@janiemiranda I guess she wants to find out when the rest of her class does.

As a parent of a college student who has been through, I would highly insist that your daughter not share her PSAT/SAT/ACT scores with her friends. Keep it generic. There is so much college discussion and competition that its not healthy to keep propagating all the info.

@suzyq7 She doesn’t plan on sharing her scores. She just doesn’t want to get her score before everyone else does. I think she is thinking if she gets bad news she doesn’t want to have an extra week to think about it

but if her score is on Naviance, it will be up for the whole school.

Wow! I was just reading on the reddit SAT forum and this year’s PSAT curve (for lack of a better term) is just brutal! Especially for the Oct 24th test date. Oct 24 Math -1 710, -2 670, -3 640, -4 620 but Oct 10th test Math is -1 750

I’m so glad my kid took the test on the 10th but I think National Merit may have to reduce the cut off in some states this year. It’s going the be a very long 9 months for many kids!

For score conversion check out page 12 and 13 here:

For any of you that follow Art’s Blog at Compass, he’s updated the National Merit section for the class of 2020 and does mentions the issues with the Oct 24th test, if you are in a high cut off state missing just two questions can knock you out this year! The CB really messed up this year!

@3scoutsmom - someone on another board mentioned the curve but did not specify the test date. Yes, that curve is insane. If you have a kid that is an NMF contender, I definitely second the suggestion to follow Art’s blog at Compass Prep. He always seem to have the most up to date information.

Thank you for the link @3scoutsmom . I thought PSAT curve is always brutal, but I am glad too that my son took the test on Oct 10th.

I never really understood the difference in percentile between nationally representative sample and PSAT user. So DS had 1280 at 10th grade, which gives him 97% and 96% on those percentages respectively. For 11th grade 1370, the percentages are 99 and 95%. Did he do better comparably or worse? That is the confusing part for me.

I’m just glad that for some of us the PSAT is just that, a prelim for the actual SAT. We looked at it as ‘practice’, in order to plan the next few months and see how much prep she will need for her SAT in the spring. Good luck to all those with NM sugarplums dancing in your heads.

@sincerelove
Nationally representative percentile is the percentile he’d be at if all the 11th graders in the United States took the test. The percentile is where he is against those who did take it

He did better.

OK, so we’re kind of in panic mode around here. D’s PSAT results were on Naviance last night. Her reading/writing score was fine, although the same as last year, but math was bad. In fact it went down 20 points compared to 10th grade, after an extra year of math instruction. In school she does fine in accelerated math (and it’s a rigorous private school), straight As in fact, but this test kicks her butt for some reason. We are thinking of looking at a prep course for the ACT instead, though no one at her school takes that test. Not sure what to think at this point. She actually thought the math was easier this year versus last year.

We weren’t looking at National Merit at all, we knew that was out of reach, but considered it a precursor to the SAT. And the prognosis isn’t good.

I looked at these results just after finding out she was rejected by NSLI-Y. It was a rough night. Ugh.

@Dancingmom518 I think the curves are generally better on the ACT test. Also, from my understanding the math is a little more straightforward on the ACT test albeit the test taker has to move faster through it. A lot of people suggest taking full practice tests of both the SAT and the ACT to see which is better. Some people just seem to like one test better than the other.

the curve on the PSAT was very harsh this year. It’s possible that she got less questions wrong and still scored lower… Also kids taking more advanced math seem to have a harder time with the PSAT because the ‘over think’ the problems.

@Dancingmom518 I tutor math and do SAT/ACT math prep. What math is your daughter in now? It is not unusual for math score to go down, once A2 is completed as the tests don’t cover any higher math. Students especially tend to forget the concepts from Geometry as they are not used much once the class is over.

VickSoCal nailed it in what happened with my daughter. She said the same thing after taking the PSAT last year. In her case she had Geometry in junior high. She wanted to and took ACT in October and her score for math was much higher.

@3scoutsmom Was the October 10th test considered a harsher curve than normal also? (I know the October 24th test was).

yes but not as bad as the one on the 24th
