@makemesmart That’s a tough grading system but hopefully the colleges recognize the school profile and adjust decisions accordingly?
@socaldad2002
It will be stated in the school profile but I wonder how many AOs will (have time to) pay that much attention to it.
@hs2020dad Thanks very much. I will definitely share this info with my son. His lowest score is likely to be a 4 so he should try to relax.
Regarding AP scores in the admissions process, locally we have had students omit scores on their applications but since the school lists the class on the transcript, the Dream school calls guidance to find out why the discrepancy. On a positive note, I do know of 2 local students who were STEM kids who left non STEM classes off their applications (both scores were 2s) and both boys were accepted to their IVY/ dream school even after admissions got their scores.
Fortunately DS20 is done with APs. (Physics 1 and APUSH). He had a game last night and practice this morning at 5:45. Would have been brutal if he had a test today
D has finished her AB Calc just now (I picked her up early), absolutely horrified how she failed it, saying there were formulas she hasn’t recognized, etc. etc. I reminded her how last year she thought she failed AP Euro, and still got a 5, but it didn’t help. She’s still convinced she got a 3. Anyway, I too think AP scores don’t matter as much as grades and AO’s recognize that everyone can have a bad day, get sick, etc. it will all be fine in the end.
DS got up at 4 am for his daily two-hr swim practice then went to school for the AP cal in the morning and IB Latin in afternoon. It is not easy to be a year-round student athlete.
@typiCAmom according to DS, not many kids in his class had enough time to finish the last part of the cal AB test. DS just guessed the last two. He still thinks he will get a 5.
D says nothing unexpected on Calc AB. Plenty of time on FRQs, little rushed at the end on no-calculator MC, but she finished.
It’s always interesting to hear how kids evaluate the way the test went, and then see the real deal in July.
S2 managed to finish the BC Calc too, though believe me he has struggled all year in this class (to the surprise of not just his parents but his teacher, whom he had last year for precalc). We’re celebrating his “survival” with a favorite dinner. Maybe later there’ll be a very particular bonfire.
When I was looking at schools and what credits they give for APs and which APs they accept, I saw that some of them will give some credits for a 3, and more credits for a 4 or 5. Also, sometimes the 3 would count for placement, and the 4 or 5 would place you another level higher. I think I saw this on UIUC, but I’m not sure. Anyway, worth looking into when deciding which scores to report.
1 does not give much in the way of AP credit, so D20 was fairly chill and relaxed so far (Bio and AB Calc). Lang tomorrow then done. She's had a chance to socialize for the last few days, which has been good. We are definitely prioritizing the mental health in our house....
just saw on twitter how a neighbor kid my s20’s age was offered a spot at a HYPS to play a major sport. (well likely letter, right?) It made me slightly anxious that my own kid hasn’t quite reached his potential yet; went to wake him up to get him going - and he was in his room studying for his tests. ahh . . . ok . . . proud of that. that calmed me down a bit.
@makemesmart, frankly, I am not worried about her AP scores(and it bothers me a little bit that I don’t care). My biggest headache at the moment is her plan to be a camp counselor/teacher at an a English immersion camp in my home country. It won’t be an organized program with adults to chaperone, and not sure 16-year old is ready to handle any emergencies, including delayed flights, etc., on her own…
@bgbg4us
If your neighbor’s kid is in class of 2020, s/he won’t be getting that likely letter from IVYs till November.
@typiCAmom
I understand your worries. Do you have family members back home that could help in case of needs? My DS has traveled a lot, but has never done solo-travel, let alone international ones. I am very impressed with your DD. She must be really mature and have great mastery of your mother tongue too. I think this will be a great experience for your DD. I would like to hear how you and your DD prepare for the trip.
I heard the AP Physics C E&M test was just brutal. But maybe it always is.
@socaldad2002 my D also stressed over maintaining her perfect 4.0 throughout high school (including 17 honors classes and 9 APs). I wish she’d relax. Three more weeks here as well.
No AP classes at my S20’s school, and tomorrow is his last day. ?
My daughter was really well prepared for Calc AB but said one of the multiple choice sections was hard and a lot of kids didn’t finish. But she knows you don’t need to be perfect on these tests so she’s not worrying for once. Two more tomorrow and then hopefully a mental breather.
FWIW, Physics C is always, always hard.
And yes, nobody in the class of 2020 has a likely letter, from an Ivy or any other school, yet.
Well, we do have a junior boy committed to Davidson for baseball. So I think some sports at some schools have announced.
