Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

S20 has 4 AP tests in the next 4 days. It’ll be interesting; he’s hasn’t prepped or studied much for them. It’s just been a down spring and while he wants to do well, he hasn’t been too motivated. I’m making a hearty breakfast the next three days. Good luck to all of yours – I’m hoping we can get a little mojo back over the summer here.

My son is graduating college!! Our HS graduation this year is June 20th. The AP classes usually do a project I think after the AP exams are over.

@bgbg4us I hear you on the hearty breakfast! Making one right now.

We also have had kind of a down spring, with a couple of big dreams dying hard. But there’s plenty to look forward to - especially, in S2’s mind, the END OF CALCULUS!

Good luck to all those taking calc, and any other APs today.

Congrats @Musicmom2015 to the college graduate!

Mine also though APUSH went well. We get the shirts. The kids swap them around, so she has shirts from schools she has never been to.

We usually get shirts or hoodies if we have a chance to stop by the bookstore, but only if they are on sale. It’s a nice keepsake.

D20 wears around 30 year old sweatshirts from hubby’s and my Alma Maters. I wonder if sweatshirts made today will last as long as these two have!!

My poor daughter is sick and in the middle of tech week for 4 shows this weekend and has IB and 2 AP exams this week. She went in this morning with no breakfast other than advil. I pushed some lunch on her - hopefully she can get something down before noon when the exam begins. Not holding out much hope for great scores. I think she’s mostly prepared for the IB exams which are more important than the APs. Junior year is brutal!

^^ yes, good vibes to your daughter, darcy. Jr. year is hard! Summer is coming!

@Darcy I know how you feel. Junior year is very stressful. My son went in today to take his AP Calc BC feeling ill. Tomorrow is his last AP but it is the hardest - AP Lang. They all deserve a break.

Mine is at AP Calc and Lang tomorrow will be the hardest for her.

Her chem teacher says this year’s AP Chem test was the easiest he has ever seen, so the curve will be harsh. That would explain why she came home saying it was super easy.

@bgbg4us My D20 says the whole class is essentially “studying” and that you’ve been either paying attention or you haven’t (know it or you don’t). I also think there’s a few weeks of review built into the class which precedes the test, so as long as your S20 has been in class, he should be prepared.

My kid probably studied more than most, because she must get a 5 on physics, calc and chem for some of her target schools.

My kid wants to major in physics at a “reach” school. He is very likely to get 5 in all the stem subjects (physics, calculus, chemistry) but worries that he might have gotten a 4 on APUSH and may get it in AP-lang. Does anyone know if elite schools expect a 5 on all AP tests? I am hoping to calm his worry.

The consensus on the CC seems to be that AP test scores does not matter much in the admission decisions – it may still be useful (maybe marginal) data points for some colleges to see student’s preparedness. After reading thru multiple CC threads and other articles I interpreted AP scores to be less important than class GPA: class GPA is most important among the academic measures (along with SAT). If student has a 4 or 5 – it shows preparedness and don’t think college spend time on overthinking/weighing a 4 vs 5 – so submit AP scores, it can only help but by not much. If AP scores are lower than 3 maybe its better not to send – they may not hurt too much but why risk, so don’t send. This is the approach we are thinking of for the kid. The usefulness of AP’s is in getting the credit’s – the competitive colleges may give credit to only 5’s; but most others accept both 5’s and 4’s.

Mine has had AP physics and APUSH. Hoping for 3 on physics, hated the class, Teacher wasn’t good. He compared his classes AP scores to the national average and his numbers were lower. And he showed these numbers to parents. Why?
APUSH was easy she said. On other end of the spectrum kids in her class are above average to national scores. Lang and Stats coming up. Says no reason to study Lang since it’s not a test to study for. Stats should be eady.

The 5’s she needs are for universities in the UK.She cannot get any 4’s in math or sciences.

They do not care about her GPA or ECs or if she is a nice person at all.

I agree with @hs2020dad about AP scores and college admissions. APs are important in the context of course rigor, and I don’t think score of 4 in AP Lang will be the reason of not getting into an elite school.

DS has AP cal today then IB Latin and physics, both have two parts that are taken over two days each. Then junior year is done!

Regarding Junior year being stressful, D20 is more than stressed as her AP Lang grade just dropped yesterday to an A- (91%) because of an 80/100 paper with two assignments left in the class. Her teacher is very unpredictable in her grading (one kid got a 0 out of 100 for not citing correctly. Really, zero points?). D is fighting to maintain her perfect 4.0 so far in HS. Fingers crossed, 3 weeks left…

@socaldad2002
We have had several Bs by now, so hats off to your DD for having a 4.0 GPA.
It is tough at DS’ school as 93/100 is B+, 94 is A-.
