@homerdog @am9799 @bigmacbeth Thanks that is very useful information! Much appreciated.
This is very elitist and insulting. There is not an inverse relationship between academic and athletic ability, nor does the Ivy League have a monopoly on all of the great minds of this world. Believe it or not, I know kids who have turned down Ivy League schools because they donāt want to be a couple hundred grand in debt.
@tutumom2001 of course there isnāt an inverse relationship between academic and athletic ability. However, the time commitment to a D1 sport is extraordinary. When we toured Columbia they told us how rare it is to find a a student that could manage the rigor of Columbia along with a D1 sport. Of course there are people that can handle both. But if someoneās stats arenāt good enough to get into an Ivy League school then I would imagine it would be quite difficult to keep up academically while committing so much time and energy to a sport. If they have the stats to get in, then the point of the conversation that I was referring to would be moot.
Saw a (bragging?) T-shirt that says āmy child and my money go to MITā today, lol.
I think the discussion of Ivy League athletes had mostly to do with those who are hooked and donāt have the stats of the typical Ivy League student. Nothing was said that those students couldnāt handle it, just that it would be tough.
So, when is the discussion about the AP-score rollout schedule, and how to get scores early, gonna start?
@bigmacbeth Iām sure it has already started on Reddit!
Woot ! Texas is on the first day this year (July 5th) no jumping through hoops/proxys for us this year!
https://apscore.collegeboard.org/scores/
@bigmacbeth you are checking for me arenāt you?
Today was Stats and now DS is finished with AP exams this year, he said he was well prepared for all but the physics C: E&M - heās still gnashing his teeth over that one. Heās exempt from finals though he might take the Cal BC exam to try to improve his semester grade. Other than build a radio for physics I havenāt a clue what heāll be doing for the next two weeks.
Re Ivyās and the athletesā¦
Of course we all know that stats doesnāt always equal ability. I think Ivyās and a lot of other schools realize that the average A student spent a lot of time and effort studying, signed up for the most rigorous classes; taking, prepping, and retaking the SAT. A D1 athlete may not have aced high school, may not have had time to study as much for every test, or extra hours for test prep. My DS friend missed a scheduled SAT because his away game was rescheduled to that Saturday afternoon because of a rainout on Friday night, and was too far to make both; whereas my kid can take advantage of 3 sittings to super score and this kid has to submit his one or two scores.
Most of the best athletes have choices. I donāt think they want to fail. Those that choose the more rigorous colleges over the bigger sports schools are doing it because they think they can handle it. Also a kid that has excelled at a sport (or art, or music, or dance, etc) at this level has a lot of characteristics that will make them successful. Theyāve played sore, they have said No to a lot of temptations, theyāve stayed up late and gotten up early, they have great time manegement skills and will power, they know how to ask for help, they can learn plays, they have instinct, they are good judges if character, they are mentally stable, they are team players⦠all while my kid just went to school and made good grades. I would say that the average athlete worthy of using his sport as a hook will manage well enough at any rigorous school. And the best colleges think so too. That is who schools want to add to their school community; schools are not just here to educate the ones who are already proven they can learn academicallly and make a good grade. They also want the kid who has proven he can do it all. They just want different kids of studentsā¦diversity. And these are the only schools I want my kid to attend.
Sorry for the rant, but I know lots of student athletes who are 4.0 and 1400 kids. I know a lot who are smart and their grades donāt show it. (I know a few knuckleheads too). I take it personally when anyone implies their kid is more worthy than another. Thatās the entitlement we pass on to our children (Iām guilty too). But The schools get more from these kids than the kids get from the school. The best athletes are choosing the schools, not the other way around. And if we donāt like a schools practices, then we need to ask ourselves why weād want our kid attending, and choose another of the 4000+ schools to send our kid and money to.
Thereās less wiggle room than you might think. No coach wants to take on an athlete who will be struggling and unhappy. Would this student get in without their hooked status is anyoneās guess, but perfect GPAs and SATs are being turned away in droves so thereās that.
I think we need to be careful about the kind of discourse we promote when we talk about student-athletes. These kids are doing more, not less. The way I see it is, the brightest kids at Ivy League schools have the privilege of sitting in the same classrooms as Div1 athletes ā they have a lot to learn from them.
@VickiSoCal Hit me up with your Dās deets, and Iāll let you know when the 5ās are ready.
@makemesmart My favorite college t-shirt, that Iāve seen a couple of times around town, says YALE WAITLIST.
When I was a freshman, my college bookstore sold t-shirts with a huge Harvard emblem in the front, and underneath, in small letters. ā⦠because not everyone could get into Ā«. I gave it to my dad and he wore it for years.
Speaking of Harvard, in Montreal you can find T-shirts that say āHARVARD: Americaās McGillā
@ShrimpBurrito My alma mater had shirts back in the day: Harvard: Michigan of the East.
ONE more AP for kiddo tomorrow.
Iāve made eggs/toast; veggie omelettes & waffles; french toast; tomorrow is muffins and fruit for breakfast. Ive felt like a short order cook all week. Hoping it all helps!
good luck to your students!
(and iām still thinking about neighbor kid with the harvard letter. hold me back. itās so hard not to be curious about it all. )
D took her AP Calc AB and AP Human Geography tests today. She thinks she did well on the tests. Itās pretty much all downhill from here. She has school until the end of the month, but not very many assignments and just 2 finals.
Sheās holding her breath for the SAT multiple choice results tomorrow - from the May 4th SAT. She got 1410 last time and needs a 1420 for Univ of Alabama. Just 10 points more and sheād be thrilled. Fingers and toes crossed!
@hgtvaddict Good luck to your D!
