Just watched DS head off for his last AP of the year. It has been a long 2 weeks with the APs and also his ECs requiring a massive amount of time. This year has been tremendously busy for the boy and I can’t believe all that he has been able to accomplish. I am sure you can all relate to the relief of jr. year coming to a close. Big weekend of events ahead and then we can all exhale. May the AP scoring curves be with all of our students!
This time next year we will all be talking about FINAL APs, last days of school, and graduations. It is all going by so fast.
I’m tryinig to sit back and enjoy the last full year with D20. Once she (and your kids too) is off to college in little over a year, things will change forever. I think I now know as a parent why my mom always said “you can live at home as long as you want”!
Thank you very much @bigmacbeth!
We’re going to be on vacation when AP scores come out, so it’s Monday for us anyway.
You don’t check scores on vacation. I am impressed.
When do AP scores come out again?
@socaldad2002 they start on July 5 for some states. California is on July 8.
D20 will be at camp with no internet access, just the ability to get a daily email from home that they print out for the kids, when the AP scores come out. I mentioned briefly making sure that I have her college board password before she goes away if she wants me to check when she’s gone… will have to double back and see what she’d prefer. (I know I’ll be super curious myself…). She’s still off at the last exam and then has to go meet up with her physics group to work on their cardboard boat project since we are all going to Oregon early tomorrow morning for D15’s graduation.
Text just now from D20 upon finishing AP comp sci: “easy lmao”. Okay, guess I didn’t need to worry that she didn’t have much time for last minute studying on that one what with the choir concert last night. Follow up text: “I had enough time to triple check in both sections and then nap for 20 minutes after the triple check and so did more than half the people in the room.” Okay then, hope that confidence isn’t misplaced. Guess we find out on July 8.
@washugrad my kid thought CompSci A was incredibly easy as well last year. And hasn’t looked at computer science in any way since then. Boring in her mind.
@washugrad My son took AP comp science today and told me it was incredibly easy.
My son got just back his subject test scores in physics and math - 2 800s. We were behind on testing so thank goodness that is out of the way!
In our family I have all username/passwords for anything college-related, for the duration of the college search. We setup a special email for use with college applications, but my D17 gave me her personal email password since there were some situations where she used that as well. There is no telling when you may need to be a proxy for your kid, or when you just need to make sure they are following up on scholarship applications, etc. You may think it’s an invasion of privacy, but it was a rule in our house, and neither D17 or D20 have a problem with it. In fact, they feel like they have a secretary.
D20’s SAT score came in a little bit lower than last time. She’s disappointed but not heartbroken. I’m trying to help her decide if she should sign up late for the June test (and cram for the next few weeks) or study hard over the summer for the August SAT. It would be her 3rd time.
Just reading through some of the most recent posts, I can’t believe how hard these kids push themselves!
@hgtvaddict Sorry about the score. Same thing happened to my D20, but is was a little more than ‘a little’ lower. It was suggested to me that she was done with testing. She’d gotten ‘her score’ earlier, and her heart and mind weren’t in it. If Bama is a strong contender, I’d let her know what it’s worth, and see if she’d go for it…
@bigmacbeth thanks for the advice. D20 is very frugal, so she does want to try for the 1420 again. If she chooses Bama, it’s an extra $24K in merit over 4 years for the 1420. We agreed a few years back that D can have whatever is left from her college savings - after her BA/BS - for something important, like a down payment on a house, grad school, etc. She really wants that leftover money, lol.
My daughter has one more AP test as she needed the alternate date as it conflicted with one of her IB exams. I think about half of her classes have real finals next week as well. Home stretch!
@hgtvaddict may I ask what your D is using for prep? The absolutely highest quality test prep material available for the masses is Erica Meltzer’s Grammar and Critical Reading. For math “PWN the SAT”. if she has not used these for prep (to fill in content holes and test taking tips). Go over every single wrong answer and figure out why it is wrong (real learning occurs during this) Only use official SATs for practice. I feel confident she can get that 1420 in Aug…Roll Tide and good luck to your D.
20 minutes a day on Khan Academy (link accounts with CB) is a nice, free, directed way to study as well. They know what you missed, and will concentrate extra time in those areas, while skipping the stuff that has been mastered.
@Octagon congratulations on perfect scores AND saying goodbye to standardized testings!!!
@hgtvaddict second the “Meltzer’s” book for grammar/reading and the CB/Khan’s official practice book.
