Hi NYC2018nyc, Which regents scores came in? my D only had 2 left. She got her English score, now just waiting on US Hist. Wondering if your kiddo was waiting on the same?
Any of your kids considering undergraduate degree overseas? Looking into Germany or Netherlands. Any info to share?
@17scholars Sorry, I canāt help. A couple (ex?) users here have kids at colleges outside the US. It takes a certain kind of kid, obviously. It sounds cool, but my kids are too into the big college experience that only the schools in the US can provide.
@17scholars Yes, S20 was thinking about it for awhile. I did get a lot of information from the international forum on here. It seems to have been just a phase, as now heās thinking of more American schools. The thing I liked about the European schools was that theyāre much cheaper, and they seemed more straightforward. If you have the score, you get in. They didnāt care if you were involved in clubs and that kind of āholistic review.ā
I think a lot of people have left since the update. Is the person who wanted Spanish Lang still around?
Anyone interested in AP Italian?
Last one out, turn off the lightsā¦
āIs the person who wanted Spanish Lang still around?ā
That was me. Thanks! Hope the high scores bode well for my D!
If anyone is still around, I have a question about the common app essay. My S20 wants to write about his experience last summer doing a STEM internship. He got to do some cool stuff, showed lots of perseverence and made a good contribution. It was a pretty life-changing experience for him. I have read though that one should write about something not already found on the common app, and perhaps for a STEM kid, write about something non-STEM. Thoughts are appreciated.
@Octagon, what my kidsā GCs and one or two college admission people Iāve talked to over the years have said is that itās less about any given topic and more about whether it really shows who the applicant is and what lights them up. Thereās value in the caution about not being redundant (or to put it positively, offering another side of the child, if it doesnāt come out elsewhere in the application), but overall the essay should bring the applicant to life for the application readers. And writing about something your S loved and found life-changing sounds like the topic that would do that. You still may want to have your S run the idea by his GC, of course. But life-changing sounds very essay-worthy.
Iām still here. Not crazy about the new format, but Iām gonna stick around here. I prefer the anonymity of CC, just donāt want anything I say here to come back to haunt my kid later. Iāll stick it out here and hopefully the admins will respond to all the negative feedback, and fix it.
I am still around as well. I plan to be here for years and hope to have others to go through this process with. Our kids are going through big changes son so letās model for them how to gracefully adapt.
I will probably just keep following this one thread but I can not see how I can read new posts in other forums without getting tired. To go to parents forum and just scroll down all the pinned posts it is time consuming and more than annoying. Also trying to go from one forum to another is very unpractical and time consuming. I am adapting for stylistic changes or format, that I do not care much. But at a minimum they should put the links for most popular forums at every page as they used to and shrink the pinned posts.
Iām actually inclined to stay due to anonymity reasons as well. It should be interesting to see how they pull the nose up on this one.
As long as the video doesnāt return, Iām staying too.
Has anyone elseās child been getting emails from schools inviting them to do a streamlined application in August? O. was lucky enough to exceed the ACT target she set for herself on her first time so she was one and done on testing and as soon as she finalized her list, we sent out her score to the remaining schools (we took advantage of the 4 āfreeā sends and had crossed our fingers the score would be good, lol).
There are some schools on her list that have set this invitation, and since she was already planning to apply - she is happily going to take the fee waivers and the streamlined process but I was just curious about how common this is. Especially with parents with older children - did you see a lot of this with your kids and should we expect that those invites will keep coming?
@beebee3 regarding āstreamlinedā applications and fee waivers. My older 2 received plenty of them. In fact, my oldest only applied to a few schools because of it, and it was almost where he landed. From our experiences, it appears that they have an SAT/ACT cutoff and send it to anyone that hits those marks. They were definitely appreciated.
@beebee3 I also saw this with my D17, although I donāt remember them being too streamlined. I think UMinn was one of these, where it seemed like different entry point to the application. I donāt remember the details. Definitely take advantage of the fee waivers and go for it!
Yep. I use FB for personal stuff so want to keep the two separate.
Right now I check this thread and a few others that I have bookmarked as well as the upgrade complaint thread. Iām not spending nearly as much time on the boards as I used to - one because it bothers my eyes and two because I canāt navigate and browse as easily. Thatās probably a good thing because it was a real time zapper for me. ![]()
We havenāt seen any invitations for streamlined applications. We also havenāt sent out any SAT scores yet, still waiting for that June score!
No invites for free applications here. Or at least not in any emails that were opened.
We have, however, received a lot of snail mail look books in the past couple of weeks.
