For anyone who is interested in the FB group, please message me or ShrimpBurrito if you haven’t yet found it.
Yes we are seeing application fee waivers in both email and snail mail. Not all are from schools she plans to apply to but any that are will be used. One from the school on the bubble may just push it on to the list.

Appreciate your responses, child has done some immersion programs and wants to branch away to Europe for her education. We may also save some $$$ and reduce anxiety of the college app process.
@beebee3 mind sharing the schools offering streamlined apps? otherwise, send a pm. tia.
@17scholars
I don’t have any personal experience about colleges in Germany, DH was pushing for DS to look into it but I really don’t want him to be that far away. ? I have a friend who lives in Germany and she told me the public universities there are “free”, but they would not send their kids there because of huge class sizes and low 4-yr graduation rate.
I don’t use FB at all, so will be sticking around CC. Haven’t been to the very active “new look” thread today, but are seeing some minor changes in the format/displays. The reply box seems to be “1.5 line spacing”, instead of 2 now.
I’ll be here too, when work travel doesn’t get in the way. I can deal with the new format, now that the videos have mercifully gone away.
D20 walked Fordham (unofficially) and toured Hofstra (officially, info session and all) last weekend. It was a fun dad/daughter getaway weekend, and we saw Frozen on Broadway while in NYC (D20 is a broadway fanatic!).
Fordham’s campus is very pretty. I know Fordham is a Catholic school – is anyone here familiar with it? Not sure how much different it is from any other school – are there any required classes due to the Jesuit affiliation?
Hofstra was nicer than I expected. I’ve heard people discuss “the neighborhood” but it seemed the area wasn’t that bad. D20 will probably apply there and may do a more formal visit of Fordham.
Have been following along and learning lots! DD20 is taking the ACT for the second time in July - hoping for a little bump to make her more competitive for merit. She also took 5 APs last year so we are anxiously awaiting those scores. Have been on a few college visits and have a solid short list but would love for her to have a few more safeties on there! A bit worried because the nursing programs seem to be more competitive than the schools as a whole - just want to make sure she has options! Will start to really tackle essays/applications once she gets past this next ACT. Looking forward to sharing this journey with you all! She’s our oldest ( of 3) so it’s all new to us!
@mebmama Welcome!
@HarrietMWelsch Thanks for the feedback.
We visited UPenn today. It was way too crowded for all of us and the campus guide said that it is obviously worse once school starts. So much noise and hustle and bustle! I guess that is what an urban campus is like. Now we are for the first time considering smaller colleges.
@mebmama Welcome. Also have a nursing student-in-the-making. The average stats for the direct entry nursing program at my D20’s first choice are higher than the college of engineering stats. It’s crazy!
@stencils I would pm @STEM2017 for info on Fordham. When our dd17 was considering Fordham, he offered us a lot of great info bc he is quite familiar with the campus.
@stencils thanks for the info on Hofstra; I think we are going to visit in the fall. I didn’t think they were ABET accredited for civil e, but I called and they are. They are just switching it from one type of degree to another; the details are fuzzy.
@mebmama DS is also taking the July ACT. Not sure how much studying is happening but the hope was that there’d be fewer distractions for this test date. He’s also waiting on SAT Subject test scores. He said they’d be coming out next week along with APs.
DS has 10 schools on his list. It’s pretty solid and he’s not wavered on it. According to DS there will be no more visiting but a few have live auditions for music so we’ll do those in Jan/Feb.
For the experienced parents, if given a choice, do you have a preference of apps: Common or Coalition?
DS is loving the research internship. Said the other research assistants and PI are extremely nice and helpful and he’s learning quite a bit. They also have lectures/discussions so he’s able to use what he’s learned and contribute to the discussions. I understand not a thing but I love listening.
I was able to book a little beach vacay. It’s been challenging to find shared free time this summer with internships and sports commitments. Only a weekend this year, but I’m grateful for it.
Hope y’all are enjoying the summer.
DS got his driver’s license and until now, I didn’t realize how much driving I was doing for him and how much of my schedule was planned around his! Wow, nice!
The added insurance was really shocking! Even with some warnings from parents here! Guess the good and the bad generally go hand in hand?! ?
Happy July! We are so hot and dry here. Did I hear summer is overrated? ?
@makemesmart Congrats on your DS’s driver license.
I hope people stick around here- we and our kids are not done with this process yet!
Congratulations to your son getting his driver’s license! @makemesmart
Hi @Octagon and others I plan to stick around but I’m another one that does not like the new format…scrolling gives me arthritis or at least it feels like it
If we stick to class of 2020, we don’t need to scroll. I get an e-mail every time someone posts in class of 2020. You can set it up that way. I just click on that link so I can stay away from the rest of CC if I want to.
@thingamajig I had tendonitis of the forearms in the past so I feel your pain!
Hooray, @makemesmart! And yes, happy July. (I think.)
I just cannot see this print very well. Old middle aged eyes.
