I wish our school / teachers bumped grades up for 5s. Would have helped my oldest’s GPA several years ago and would help just a bit now (D20 got 5s on all 4 APs
). Our teachers overall are pretty strict about grading but then the kids do well on the AP exams as they’ve been whipped into shape by the expectations over the year. It’s tough though because colleges want to see a high GPA over great test scores.
DS 20 got his scores back and he is quite pleased. 4 for both APUSH and Physics 1.
I hate the AP exams. My daughter had 98 average in APush and received a 98 on her NYS Regentsas well and only received a 2. My son last year had a 100 in APworld and APEuro and also got 2’s. So frustrating
Frustrated with my D’s 3 on AP Spanish Lang. She didn’t prepare enough. Ugh.
DS received 5s on his APs - Bio and Lang. He studied so much for these so he was super happy. Best news is that he eked an A out of AP Lang. His score rounded to a 90 so he just made it.
Congrats @hs2020dad on those scores but sorry about the teacher. Any way to appeal?
Thanks for the encouraging words; about the grade bump based on AP scores - think its not done in our school. Also DS20 is very reluctant to email the teacher - I am trying to convince him to appeal without appearing to complaining. BTW he got A’s in 3 quarters and a B in the last quarter and overall full year grade as B - imho its just ridiculous. Teacher always gave him glowing reviews in progress reports - he even asked her for recommendation letter…not sure what happened and we just wanted to learn the deep slide in 4th quarter (ironically they didn’t do much in the class in this quarter - only the group projects - all other members in sons group got good grades in this quarter). We are going to appeal but am almost sure, grade will not be changed but at least we would know what is the issue (scope for any lessons learned).
About the AP scores - we too used earlyscores to see the score - did the same last couple years and it was always accurate (its a VPN anyway - we will still be logging into same account). My understanding is AP scores are not really that useful in college admissions - so low scorers need not worry much (they may not get credits but its better than the other way round).
My child refuses to use earlyscores or the like, so we wait until Monday.
@hs2020dad, I am furious on your behalf. How does 1/4 B and 3/4 A equal a final grade of B? Good luck appealing and keep us posted.
D20 got her AP scores. Received a 3 in AP Calc AB and a 5 in AP Human Geography. She’s happy with the results, as the colleges she’s applying to all accept a score of 3 for AP Calc AB. Hope everyone is having a great summer!
@hs2020dad my s18!had a class where he got A’s the first 3 quarters and a B fourth quarter and a B overall. Very frustrating.
My D20, soon-to-be nursing major, would not be able to apply many AP credits towards her program. She did well enough on Bio & Calc for credit at her #1 school, but is unsure whether she will choose to take the credits. AP Lang can only be used for Elective credits, so she will probably not use that either. So, she is likely to enter college with 0 credits applying towards her degree. She is only taking AP Stats and AP Psych next year…not sure how those will play out yet. She just wants to get INTO the program, so most of her efforts right now are focused on admission, not college credit.
What do you mean B overall? Wouldn’t there be a first semester grade (A) and second semester grade (B)? What is an overall grade?
At least at S1 and S2’s school, students receive a final grade for the year, which incorporates the first semester grade, the second semester grade, and the grade on the class final or year-end project. So that’s my guess at “overall grade.” In our example, it’s that overall grade that is used to determine the student’s GPA.
DS’ school has grades for each q1-q4, semester grades of S1 and S2, then year end grade, class ranking is only based on cumulative three quarters’ GPA, DS always has worst grade in q3 (busiest quarter with almost weekly club and hs swim meets, and model UN), so we see his grades make a dive every year around that time. Bad for ranking but might be ok for EA/ED?! ?
We finished parents’ brag sheet and will send it over to DS’ GC next week. DS also finished his own brag sheet. We only have about 5-week left for summer!
That’s interesting. I had not heard of an overall grade before. Don’t most colleges recalculate on their own rather than asking for a HS GPA? If so, I would think that the colleges would calculate the GPA based upon the two semester grades rather than the overall grade.
Our school gives a grade each quarter but only the two semester grades (which are independent of each other) are used to calculate GPA.
Our kids get a final grade for a year long course. Each quarter grade is worth 20% and the midterm and final are each 10%. Gpa is calculated using the final grades only. So if they don’t get the desired grade for one or two marking periods they can still try to bring it up.
We got some AP scores here as well. S20 got a 5 on AP Lang, which he is very happy about. He said it was easy and didn’t study. The strange part is there is no grade for APUSH - it says it’s delayed? He really struggled in that class so he’s not very hopeful about that one anyway. I know he checked the scores on the early score site yesterday, but I just checked the collegeboard and it had one and not the other. Who knows, we are in NY so maybe it’s not our day yet. Anyway he’s really waiting for his SAT score, which I believe comes out on Wednesday.
@NYC2018nyc New York scores were released today per college board.
Final grades for my D20’s school are also 20% for each marking period and 10% each for mid term and final exam. Only classes that have the option to be taken as a leveled class (regular, honors, AP) count towards the GPA. So for example there are half year intro programming classes that can be taken as regular or honors and those count towards the GPA. But if you take intro to foods or any other FCS class, those don’t have an honors option so they are not counted towards the GPA. The grade of course still shows up on the transcript, but won’t impact the GPA at all.
@hs2020dad - re appealing the grade - if you are pretty sure the grade won’t change, then you should definitely NOT appeal. It will decrease your son’s chances at a good letter from that teacher and will risk your son or you in general seeming like a complainer which could come through in other aspects of his HS experience. Just my take, as a HS teacher.
p.s. if you thought the grade might change, my advice could be different.
