Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

@bgbg4us She is talking about the Huntsville campus, not Tuscaloosa. They still haven’t posted scholarship info for 2020 at Tuscaloosa. Waiting not so patiently over here…

@ShrimpBurrito , 2021 Texas mom here, we are eagerly awaiting Tuscaloosa scholarship, just to see if any changes get made. I know you live in OK. We are looking at OK State for engineering, boy those engineering course fees are high but still with their NMF scholarship it is doable. Can you tell me if the OK state engineering kids do ok in job market. Thank you from West Texas

Yep. Huntsville.

Hi @BingeWatcher
My S18 is at Ok State. He’s business, though. I don’t know specifics about job placement for engineering grads at Ok State, but in general, it’s a very highly regarded program locally. Have you visited? It’s a beautiful campus, and Stillwater is a fun little college town.

@ShrimpBurrito we did the Honor tour in May when school got out here. Loved the campus! Gorgeous campus, felt everyone was “salt of the earth” people like here in West Texas. We are going back in Oct for another tour. Want to talk to engineering adviser and electrical eng Prof. Very, Very high on our list. Thank you so much. Hope your son is loving it And D could drive there and boy would that cut down on cost.

@BingeWatcher Awesome! We have nothing but good things to say about S’s experience at Ok State. He came at it from a different angle, as he was adopted internationally at age 16, quickly learned English and plowed through his GED. The profs and admins at Ok State have been very accommodating.

I, not my S20, got an e-mail from the dean of admissions of Case Western, encouraging my S20 to apply and suggesting that I, not my S20 could write about any questions and “stay in touch.” I don’t know how my own e-mail was pulled for this. And it seems odd to me that comunication between parent and school would be encouraged. Has anyone gotten something like this? If so, have you, not your child reached out?

@fretfulmother Our S19 didn’t take most of his APs senior year. They wouldn’t do much for him at Bowdoin and they didn’t care. I think you all may want to just check with each school on your list. I know some kids at Harvard who didn’t take them. And Vanderbilt, and NU, and BC, and Duke and many many more. I don’t think most colleges care at all.

@Octagon Case Western has copied me in on most emails in the last month or two. But they are clearly speaking to D20, and not me. I have also gotten an email from them telling me D2 has been ‘invited’ to apply, but again, it doesn’t offer to answer my questions. There is a profile that kids set up at CWRU, and can add email addresses of parents/guardians…maybe something was entered incorrectly.

Thanks @bigmacbeth That is helpful. My S20 never set up a profile at CWRU. The e-mail was only directed to me: “I would be very happy to consider your student for admission. Parents play a vital role in their children’s college decision process. I’m happy to be in touch with you, and I look forward to receiving your child’s application!”
I will let my S20 contact the school and not me, but I found it interesting and actually nice to get some respect as a stakeholder in the process!

@Octagon - I received the same email from CWRU. A few other universities copy me on emails to DS20. Think these universities have parent emails in contact forms. For CWRU, we (both I and DS20) attended a local info session they conducted and I presumed that is how they got my email id. I am actually fine with receiving college emails (compared to all other junk that I get these have at least some value - i.e. knowing when the app is opened etc).

@hs2020dad Bingo! Yes now I remember - I attended a CWRU information session without my S20. Yes, I appreciate these as well.

Excuse me, guys. Can anyone PM me and help me out with finding a page which explains the new format of the site? This is the only thread which loads, the forums are …where?.. and the words are HUGE.
Thanks.

We actually never had any contact with CWRU, but I am receiving emails from them almost weekly, I had no ideas where they got my email and knew I have a student in the class of 2020. It would have been a good school to apply for DS, but considering the cost and location, he will not.

So my D20 didn’t get one of her honors classes because it wouldn’t fit. Her counselor thinks she needs to pick up an AP to fill the hole based on her application list. She is currently signed up for AP Spanish, AP Calc AB, AP Literature, AP Chemistry (double block), an Honors Marketing class, and a class where she tutors other kids (counts as Honors). Counselor is suggesting AP Stats. Any opinions from the crowd here? She’s applying to UNC, UVA, UPENN, Duke, some big name scholarships and a few safeties. Thanks in advance.

Hi all, Need advice from parents with older kids. My DC is applying to few schools which requires science teacher recommendations only. 2 of them retired(freshman and sophomore) and one notified of moving out of state mid summer and not reachable now. Its frustrating to say the least. How do you handle situation like this and explain to colleges ?

@chb088 I recommend that your D20 check with another student who has taken AP stat for what the course is like. My S20 (who has not taken it and won’t) told me that students in the class were saying that it was a lot of work.

@2FutureBSMDsMom Very frustrating! Perhaps this is something GC can explain in the letter to colleges.

Well S20 and his dad visited Duke today. I didnt really get too many specifics, only that the two tours they took , general and Pratt really gave them a feel for the school. They showed me pics they took of the campus and the garden and it was gorgeous. They both said the buildings reminded them of Hogwarts.
Also for those families that are under $60,000 income, there is no parental contribution- something we didnt realize. My kid likes it so much, I had to remind him, its HARD to get in, even for us in-staters.

@chb088 my D18 took AP Stat his senior year and I recall it being a class with a decent amount of work, though not terrible. He was a very strong math student so that helped. If she’s interested at all in a math or business major it could be a good class. She’ll definitely have a full schedule!

@2FutureBSMDsMom , I would contact the admissions office of the schools that are requiring those recommendations and ask them what you can do. Or as suggested by @octagon, have the GC explain it.

@MamaBear2001 Given that Duke is private, do they tend to admit more students from NC? I would be surprised, but not shocked I suppose, if this were the case.
