Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

@bigmacbeth Duke gets more applications from NC, but there’s no policy on admitting more from NC because they are private. We’re in NC, and my D20 is applying as well.

@bigmacbeth They do, but as far as I know, it does not correlate to easier odds of getting in, I have also heard that being in the county Duke is in is actually a hinderance.(Thankfully, we dont reside in that county).
I still have more research to do on it.

DS accepted at Iowa State last night and put in his preference list for dorms. It let you choose right down to the floor and house within the floor I think, but he just selected the buildings as he doesn’t really care as long as he’s in an area close to where the majority of his classes would be. I think the reality of how real all this is is finally is starting to hit home with him.

@chb088 I definitely agree about talking to other students in your school. My D20 took AP Stats last year and it was an easy class at her school with very little homework. AP Comp Sci Principles is another AP at her school that doesn’t have a lot of homework.

@2FutureBSMDsMom I would talk to the GC. Another option is she might have an email for the retired teachers. Our retirees often stay local and continue to work in the schools, subbing or grading tests.

Just got the email to apply at Case Western. It’s on her list. Higher on her list than mine.

It is very quiet at my house. Kid is currently working through required summer work and some art projects. Not much “application activity” yet as first apps are due Nov. 1st and my kid is taking it slowly. Congratulations to the kids already accepted and good luck to all!

FYI Bama is starting to admit students. My S is in. ? Now waiting on updated merit chart.

Catching up after a few days off CC…
@cshell2 Congratulations to your son on his Iowa State acceptance!
@AnRsMom Congratulations on your daughter’s Tarleton acceptance!
@ShrimpBurrito Congratulations to your son on his Bama acceptance!

@ShrimpBurrito Congrats to your son on Bama! We just found out my D20 is also in.

@AnRsMom Wow! Congrats again! Two acceptances already, that’s amazing!

I just wanted it all out of the way before school started so DS can focus on his classes and wrapping up his Eagle rank stuff. Plus he started working at McDonalds and is all pumped to work lots of hours. I can’t really argue with him wanting to save money for next year. I told him all personal spending beyond tuition/books and room and board were on him.

His applications are all easy 30 minutes at most deals though. No schools that require essays or letters of recommendation.

Congratulations on all the acceptances! And good luck with merit money!
Got an email from Fordham today, inviting DS to apply and the application fee is waived. Is this a new trend now? Waiving application fees? We will not apply as it is not on DS’ list, wish the schools on his list will waive the fees too!

@chb088
DS20 took AP stat during his sophomore year, it is an easy A class and he also got an easy 5 on the exam. It is not calculus based stat so not many colleges (I bet none on your D’s list) will accept it as a credit. DS does like math and is planning to major in Math in college.

I think University of Chicago rocks; and hoping my son will apply there. It’s a waived fee if you are applying for financial aid. (yes we are) All the essays are daunting though.

When it comes to essays, my s16 seems to have a simple essays and writing style. His sister16 took one of his essays, rewrote it, and it was fabulous (after he sent off his). How much of an essay needs to come from the kid? how much editing can be done? How much help on an essay can a kid get before it’s not the kids’ words any more?

@cshell2…hsv is the most expensive airport to fly in/out of (at least in one ranking)…if you still want to visit, you might be better off flying into birmingham or Nashville and renting a car…(Southwest flies to those cities)…alternately frontier may be your cheapest bet at HSV…

Question for those with acceptances already- what was the average time you had to wait? DD20 just applied August 1 for one school (when portal opened) and I am just curious about response time (knowing it will vary according to school) TIA!

@cshell2 Our state schools do not offer rolling or really early admissions and I think that makes the kids around here start their apps a bit later.

@makemesmart I heard of schools waiving fees before but no idea if it is happening more often now. My D has 2 waivers: one to the school that she won a book award and one to a local private that offers waivers to our public high school. Both colleges are regular decision and if she is lucky in the Early Action round she might not even apply.

Both Duke and North Carolina accept AP Stats. On the other hand not that many schools accept Computer Science Principles I think the OP’s counselor was right.

@engineermomof2 - Thank you for the flight advice, I’ll look into it. It seemed crazy to me that a flight there would be $400 to $500. I thought it was from scheduling out of our small local airport, but it was actually MORE for us to drive the 2 hours to Minneapolis and fly directly from there, which made no sense.
