Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

I am so annoyed with the school. Most of the college applications were submitted a week ago and recommendations and transcripts have not been uploaded yet. This is a small school with less than 200 seniors and several guidance counselors.

It’s stressful @holychild My daughter had to talk to one of her recommenders as he’d started the process with the CommonApp but forgot to submit. If nothing else this project has taught her a lot about follow up, double check, follow up, repeat.

Popping in after taking a much needed CC breather. @holychild - we were in the same situation up until this morning. We also are a fairly small school with a few GCs. I was super stressed because I remember some last minute submissions by the school with my S19. My S20 kept going by the counseling office to try to get in and make sure it is done. (Unfortunately, our public schools here are woefully underfunded and our poor GCs way too overworked.) After 4 days of making a nuisance of himself, everything is now submitted. I adore our GC and I knew she would come through but I just wanted it absolutely done given S20’s top pick has a hard and fast 11/1 deadline. A few last minute things on S20’s side now (honors app that is almost done, SRAR for another) and we can move onto the waiting phase. Thankfully he has a few acceptances with nice merit to ease the pain of waiting…

@holychild When are you able to request transcripts and recs to be sent? Ours more often than not beat the application . D20 was kind of slower than anticipated.

We requested the recommendations before school went on summer break at the end of junior year and followed up again in September when school reopened. Transcripts were requested and paid for about two weeks ago. One recommendation is in but the two others are still outstanding. We were told everything will be done by October 28. It should not take this long. I am seriously annoyed. I am biting my tongue right now because I know how spiteful people can be.

@holychild at our HS I believe they upload in batches—especially for schools that many students are applying to.

8 apps submitted tonight!! 5 EA, 1 rolling, 2 RD. Transcripts requested. Taking ACT this Saturday. Three apps left that need additional work. Woot woot!

Wow, @taverngirl , that’s impressive!

Thanks @ShrimpBurrito this is my S, who’s struggled through high school and just seems to all of a sudden be coming into his own. He wrote a fantastic essay that really shows who he is and only needed minimal grammatical fixes, has been putting crazy effort into his hs and college courses this year, and did a few sessions with an ACT coach (who basically told him he knows the material but just needed some test-taking strategies to improve his score - looks like he’s on track to improve his score by several points). Best of all, he’s finally believing in himself. You can see the pride he is feeling. I can’t believe the growth this past year!

D20 admitted to UMinn Nursing today. She is supper happy to have this one in her pocket!!

Ok, I am officially feeling the stress of application season as 11/1 looms. I dreamt last night that I could not work on the FAFSA as planned today because I had an essay to write! Not sure what my twisted mind thought was required of parents but I was quite shocked to ā€œrememberā€ that I had not written it yet. All the rain expected this weekend sets up perfect conditions for getting it all done so I should feel better soon.

In better news, DD20 used some free time yesterday to call 2 scholarship programs to ask her questions. She can now access both applications and knows how to proceed! Love that girl for being so on top of it all ?.

So, this 11/1 deadline. Is that midnight? Is it based on the time zone of the school? Not that I’m stressing out about S20 finishing essays or anything!

Yes its 11/1 midnight (11.59PM if you will  ).
I think its timezone of the applicant but better check.

@bigmacbeth Congrats on your UM acceptance. Hopefully, you are in the running for one of those merit scholarships… The only news out of MN is how they just keep increasing OOS tuition

Congrats @bigmacbeth! Wonderful news.

@bigmacbeth - Is MN your home state? It would be fun if all these Class of 2020 kids on here ended up at UMN together.

@cshell2 We are in IL. It’s not first choice right now, but anything can happen!

@Octagon @1917souci Thanks! I hope she’s in the running for merit too. Those three years of double digit increases have definitely made them less of a deal.

First application sent! Should have two more out tomorrow. It’s getting real!

@Cheeringsection When D18 was in the thick of college applications, I dreamt that I took the ACT. It was awful! ??

Three applications submitted yesterday :-). Still has one more to apply to and an honors essay but that one isn’t due until February. Though I sure hope she’ll get it done well before then! She has been spending all day today at her Girl Scout camp helping out with a Halloween themed day there and tomorrow will be homework focused. But hopefully she’ll get the last application done soon. But sure felt good to get those three in. Though for FSU it’s not quite wrapped up as there’s a couple of things she’ll need to add in once she has her username and password for the application site. But the Common App stuff for them is all done and she’s inputted her self reported grades, she just can’t link it to them yet.
