Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

@ShrimpBurrito how funny! I’ve been having recurring “I forgot to do something” dreams off and on for months now but all have been about the office. I have been crazy busy there for over a year now so those make sense. The “I forgot to write my essay” was new. Finished the FAFSA today so I should sleep better tonight.

@voyagermom My S is applying to FSU, too. One of my most favorite college campuses!

I’ve been having I forgot to do my applications dreams lately. Glad I’m not the only one having these crazy dreams!

@ShrimpBurrito we’re from PA and DD is thinking she wants somewhere warmer for college (though has PA schools on her list as well in case she decides to stay closer to home). We looked at both UCF and FSU a few weeks ago. I thought both campuses were really nice with a slight preference for FSU. We’ll have to see if she gets the OOS tuition waiver as adding in travel cost will bump the cost over what we want to spend per year. Good luck to both of our kids as we wait until the end of January to hear back.

My daughter is also applying to FSU.

Whew. DD20 finally finished and submitted her last 2 apps today. So glad she is done with those. Best of luck to everyone!

That’s great amsunshine! I can’t wait to say that. We only have one in so far.

So D20 submitted her ED app today. She is relieved to have it done. 2 in and 11 to go…

So S20 is done with his applications!! May send a reach or two RD, but maybe not, he’s pretty happy with the 5; 1 safety, 2-3 matches, 1-2 reaches (not a big reach). We completed FAFSA and CSS over the weekend, but George Washington requires a pile of documentation…ugh! Now I have to remember S20’s log in for 2018 tax return. I’m sure his $2800 of summer earnings is going to make or break our net cost at GW.

The two of us are off the DC to tour GW and American over the weekend. S20 has 5 weeks between cross-country and the start of the swim season, so I feel like it is now or never!!

Good Morning, do colleges ever update portals on the weekend or do you think it is pointless to check for decisions then?

@Kayak24 I was kind of wondering the same thing. I figure some decisions can be made during the day on Fridays, and the portal may not be updated until the weekend. I love checking portals, so it’s never pointless. So far, though, D20 has received an email when her portal updates. I know not all schools do this, however.

@voyagermom @ShrimpBurrito @janiemiranda Mine also applied to FSU. :slight_smile:

D’s first acceptance came in yesterday: UCF. She will be going somewhere!

@roper1313 congrats on your S completing his applications! Have a great trip to DC - it’s a fabulous college town!

S20 applied EA to Miami, Georgia, and Virginia. He applied to one other college but I can’t remember which one. Maybe VCU. He has yet to put in his app for Richmond, which is due Nov. 1.
He’s a very independent person and I haven’t had to look over his shoulder too much during this process. Fingers crossed that everything is truly turned in on time.

@sunwalker Good luck to your S20, and I too hope everything was turned in on time. I don’t have the will-power to stay out of the process. Good thing with my D20, because she ‘forgot’ she needed to get letters of reference for a sizable scholarship app, and it was almost too late by the time I intervened. I learned with D17 to trust, but verify. I knew/know every school and every deadline.

Anyone know if the common app website works on a deadline day or does it freeze? My procrastinator and perfectionist will probably want to submit on November 1st for the early apps.

Don’t let them do it, @Octagon! Even if their site doesn’t get frozen or glitchy, who knows what could happen at your end? Just lived through a power outage on the day of S2’s internal/counseling office deadline for EA apps. Move the deadline in your house up.

@HarrietMWelsch Well we have a home generator (which we got after we went more than a week without power) but that is besides the point isn’t it! Thanks for the advice. It would be a terrible lesson to learn so yes time to set a limit.

I am so excited! I just checked my D’s UC application and it looks like everything is complete. We need to read over it again together and be 100 percent sure, but it should be ready to submit this weekend. Yay!

@Octagon - another parent here with a DS shooting for Nov 1 submission. Hopefully there are no glitches. Just to give credit, we had an issue with commonapp site couple weeks ago - ds20 was on chat with support and they resolved it quickly. But putting onto the last minute is always undesirable - ds20 has a test tomorrow and wants to do one more go-over on Thursday before submitting early Friday. Fingers crossed.
