Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

@Octagon @hs2020dad another 11/1 procrastinator here. Tho DS has “declared” that he will submit his app tomorrow! I just chuckled. I hope he gets the last laugh.
Good luck everyone!

@Octagon, we have a generator too. The horrible discovery that night was that it does not (as I always believed it to do) power the stack that both the modem and router are attached to.

My D submitted her 6 EA apps last Thursday. We are so pumped to be almost done with this. 2 RD apps will go in over Thanksgiving. There are only 2 more weeks left before mid-terms - probably her most important term! no pressure

I have resorted to bribes - pancakes on saturday if everything is in thursday night!

Still plugging away over here. 3 done, 3 more to go by Friday! He has lots of drafts, but the closer it gets the slower he goes. We’re all stressed out.

@Octagon
Lol, up the ante! ?

Love the pancakes bribe. Just the right level. Here, we’re planning to celebrate by finally starting the new season of The Good Place, as soon as S2 hits SUBMIT tomorrow evening. (Because, you know, it can’t happen on Halloween.)

@HarrietMWelsch Aw – we love The Good Place, too! Good luck to your son submitting tomorrow and enjoy!

D20 submitted another EA app today! It has been a busy weekend, she did 2 EA on Saturday and 1 EA on Sunday. To top off this crazy week, her school’s grading period ends on Friday so school work also needs to get done. She took a little break to celebrate she just got notification of her auto-admission to UT-Austin but will jump back in later tonight to do one more.
Me? Going crazy, trying not to be too pushy, but the deadline is so close.

D is still working on her essay, still 200 words over the limit. All her supplements are done. Hasn’t even told us the topic yet for her essay. Only her English teacher has seen it. Getting very anxious. She has 5 schools for 11/1, 2 for 11/15 and 2 for 12/1. And then hoping maybe we can skip any RD schools depending on the outcomes.

We’re shooting for an EA on 11/1 also, and another on 11/15. CA essay is at 968 words, supplement for 11/1 app has a solid draft. I think she’s only ~4 hours from finishing. Would love for this to all get submitted tomorrow night, but my money is on Friday (no school for her that day).

Yikes. These essays that are over the limit would worry me! I mentioned before, but D17 struggled reducing her word count. It took her longer to remove 200 words than it took for her to write 850. Way longer. D20 wasn’t much better, even after I warned her to be 100 words UNDER the limit.

DD20 is struggling to get her activities, honors and awards to fit in a scholarship application fill-in .pdf. She is SO tired of doing this list over and over again.

I can’t believe how many essays he’s written. So many supplements, I just don’t see why any school would need THAT many! He only did one school without a supplement.

D20 hit submit on 5 EA apps yesterday — UMichigan, Miami Ohio, Ohio State, URichmond and UPittsburg. Happy to beat the Nov 1 deadlines. Now on to the artistic profile (UMich) and RD apps. Actually, i think she still has an honors application due Nov 1, but the school only sends it after common app is submitted, and she already has it written.

A quick question about app submission completion: DS20’s teacher still hasn’t yet submitted the recommendation (this will be the second letter that some colleges require. the first letter is already in). We are still hoping the teacher will complete his letter before the deadline - but wondering how college view this: Will it still be early app if one of the required component is submitted late? (all other things like school report, transcripts, scores are submitted this is the second teacher letter - will school give some leeway or they expect all components done before the deadline).

(morning rant: ds requested this teacher last year; he agreed but suggested to son and all other students asking his recommendation to comeback in the fall with latest resumes - son gave him the info in mid-sept with multiple reminders afterwards - one of the reminder is from myself - still no letter. We just learned that he is out rest of the week :frowning: …I know teachers are over-working but this is highly unprofessional to first agree and then not fulfill)

One of D20’s EA schools with a Nov 1 deadline sent a really nice “8 things to know about your early app” email yesterday, and #1 was “your deadline isn’t their deadline”:

“…as long as the material you are responsible for is on time you’re good to go. We usually receive many letters of recommendation within a week or so after the deadline, and this is completely fine.”

YMMV of course at different schools, but this was reassuring for us with this specific school.

So, I just logged in to see DS’ Common App for some final proof-read. A silly question that I hope some of you more experienced parents could help to answer, “do the AOs read the Common App on paper or on the computer?” Asking because the “preview” view (presumably the paper print out view) looks not exactly the same as the online view. Spacing of the “preview” view is huge. But if we remove the spacing, it looks a bit cramped online.
I can’t imagine the AOs would read thousands of apps online, but then print them all out on paper seems to be a tremendous waste.

They read them online/on screens.

I also heard that colleges give teachers more grace period but the student’s app has to come in before the deadline.
DS’ counselor and one of his LOR writers have not send in their LORs. But neither has DS hit the submit button.
