Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

I have an anecdotal piece of information after an informal experiment last night:

Some colleges do update their portals overnight.

I checked one of my son’s EA portals right after midnight last night and again this morning around 6:30am and the portal had been updated to say that they had received his transcript and letter of rec. Moreover, those items had only been sent two days ago, so sometimes this all happens swiftly.

It’s something I had always wondered about.

How often are you (or your kids) checking portals? Do you check on weekends too?

Another rookie question: do you get the “portal” once you send in your application?

Yes - most schools send login information for the portal a day or two later.

@makemesmart

Yes - DS20 received the login info the day after the submission. Ask your child to check the spam (I would say: for the next 3-4 months they should make it a habit to check the spam folder as well) and add the email to safe list so it appears in the inbox next time.

Interesting. I have always been under the impression that if ‘any’ material does not make it by the deadline then you are pushed to the next deadline (usually RD). Good to know that some schools don’t act this way. There must come a point at which they can’t wait anymore, though.

We too are waiting on a slow teacher.

@momzilla2D I can’t even imagine having 1 kid at UMich and 1 kid at OSU. That’s even worse than my situation where I went to UMich, and D17 attends MSU.

We almost had that situation and then ds changed his mind at the last minute. All 3 of my sons and their girlfriends are OSU grads now.

I agree with @makemesmart about checking spam folders. D20 applied over the weekend and was waiting for the email from the schools to check the portals and confirm that all the necessary paperwork was in before the deadline. Well no email for one of them. It turns out the email from University of Miami went to the “Promotions” folder in gmail! So check there too.

She also head from two of the admission officers that for transcripts and reference letters they are not completely strict about having them by Nov 1st, as long as it is close to the deadline it’s fine.

I know, right! UMich attracted D20 with their dual degree program. It is one of her top choices, but it is a high hurdle, with UMich’s already low acceptance rate + an audition for the Musical Theater program.

So D20 got her acceptance to UT Knoxville with an in state tuition voucher. Is there a place where we are posting Class of 2020 acceptances like in previous years?

I agree. I verified, but S20 had everything under control. We have a grid that lays out colleges, deadline dates of EA and RD, SAT averages, deadline dates of honor college apps, when to expect decisions, etc.

I just wanted to throw out there that just because a LOR isn’t in today doesn’t mean it won’t be in on time.

I have a LOR due on the 1st which I have not yet submitted. Granted, this student was VERY late in asking me (about 2 weeks ago) but still–I’ve been mulling and drafting and will probably fire off the final letter tomorrow.

Good luck to everyone who has their noses up on this deadline. My dd submitted her last Nov. 1 application yesterday. She has an EA app due on the 15th that only needs a photo to be complete (dance application), and then three more for Dec. 1.

@NYC2018nyc So. Many. Essays. Many similar but not quite the same (we are finding this especially for dance supplements). Others completely from left field. “What is the most compelling thing you’ve ever read?” “Who is the fictional character you relate to most and why?”

I am very thankful for the honors programs and dance programs that do NOT ask for any additional essays.

Can’t believe this, first and only EA application done and sent! Silly me even took a photo of DS hitting the submission button ?, I might be forgiven since this is our very first!
Second LOR has also been submitted, now the only thing still missing Is guidance counselor’s LOR.
DS will take a day or two break then go back to CA.
Good luck everyone.

@makemesmart , my S takes a video every time he hits a “submit application” button. He puts so much work into them, I guess he likes to document the end game. ?

@ShrimpBurrito I was thinking of videoing too. Maybe the next one. ?

D20 submitted her final nursing supplement, as well as a local scholarship app, tonight. Almost to the finish line!

S2 hit “send” last night! Phew.

Last three apps submitted, kind of sad but yet very happy!! Transcripts sent, reccs sent, just waiting on Tuesdays ACT results (crossed fingers). Need to tackle the FAFSA and CSS now, ugh.
