Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

DS20 just walked in the door after a long day at a tournament. He is flopped on the ground finally relaxing for the first time in forever and it’s all I can do not to start firing questions at him about portals, etc. I know I need to just let him chill tonight. But it’s HARD! Lol

@mtemmd I totally get it. I often tell myself not to mention anything about college to my D20 and I just can’t help myself.

She has a busy week coming up with the opening of the play at school but I’ve already asked her if we can meet Saturday to review her apps and get them submitted. But it’s still going to be so hard to just leave her alone this week.

Reviewed the last (for now) scholarship application today. All DD needs to do is answer the questions I noted, finalize and submit. Not sure which evening that will happen but I am looking forward to it!

Noticed that at Case Western the Early Action and Early Decision was extended to November 15 because of the Natural Disasters and unplanned schooling closings.

Saw the same extension to Nov15 for a few other universities (Tufts for example). Good they did this for the affected students.

But the wording of extension is kind of confusing - got the impression that they will accept any apps before nov.15 (i.e. a student who is not affected by school closures sends the app before nov 15 and asks for ea/ed may still get ea/ed status - am I reading it correct?)

For example this is the notification on one college:
“We will keep the application open through xxxxx for those students who need more time.”

If I had seen the extension of EA I still wouldn’t have told my D20… :sunglasses:

@hs2020dad
I think the extension is to ALL potential applicants, whether in the disaster affected area or not, for CWRU. We got an email telling my DS about the extension and ask him to apply. I think CWRU is a great school, but we have not visited/nor shown any interests in applying, yet it is one of several very persistent schools that keeps sending me (and my DS) emails.

Since the one EA application, DS took a break from college app. His next deadline is 12/1 so a little procrastination seems ok, at the moment.

DS20 is now 4 for 4 – 4 applications and 4 acceptances. These are all in-state Texas colleges, no essay required, not even a counselor or teacher recommendation. He’s accepted to Sam Houston State, Univ. of the Incarnate Word, Texas A&M-Commerce, and just last week, Stephen F. Austin Univ. Still thinking about applying to Texas State and UTSA. In Texas, we have ApplyTexas, sort of like the Common App, where you can apply to just about any school in Texas using one application. Some schools require additional info, but in general, you can copy-and-paste alot of it.

I set up and have access to all his portals, as well as FAFSA. We set up a gmail email for him several months ago, so that’s what I log into to check.

We are postponing a decision until perhaps after the first of the year when he is hoping to be cleared from rehabbing his ACL surgery last June. He’s hoping to walk on to continue his sport, so we’ll have to see how the rehab goes. He’s doing very well so far. In the meantime, he’s got four on the hook and he’d be happy to go to any of them.

@cgpm59 - not being from Texas, but having friends/relatives at Texas Tech - did you consider there? know much about TT??

Texas Tech is a great state uni. Traditional campus/ traditional college experience
large defined campus, great engineering school right in the middle of campus. Greek, Big 12 sports, tons of school spirit. Lot’s of north Texas kids go to Tech.

1st acceptance received! Probably her #5 or 6 but at least it made the list and it should be affordable.

@Cheeringsection congratulations! That first acceptance certainly takes some of the pressure off!

Happened to us as well. College asked us to get the “batch number” from the college board. That enabled them to locate them easily.

@bgbg4us I am a Texas Tech graduate, undergrad and grad school. Lubbock is a little too far for what DS wants, plus I don’t think he’d have as much of a chance to walk on in his sport there. People in Texas make fun of Lubbock being flat and boring, but it was a great place to be a college student and I loved Tech.

That’s a big state when an in-state school is ‘too far’!

Its nice to know that Texas has such a wide range of in-state public schools.

We are from a state with one real public school (couple smaller campuses in selective majors) option; and to top that we are among the highest in-state tuition fee states. In fact, that is the only metric our state flagships comes in top10

@bigmacbeth from Amarillo in the north to Brownsville in the south is 786 miles, 12 hours-plus of driving, El Paso to Texarkana is over 800 miles. DS is not that fond of driving, so he’s trying to stay between two and four hours.

@hs2020dad yes, there are lots of in-state options in Texas, so that is definitely a plus. Something for everybody.

DS was just accepted into the University of Minnesota Twin Cities today!! First one, while, we were not worried, it is nice to have an options. This is probably 3-4 on his list, but is a great school to have as a back up. He applied to the College of Liberal Arts (econ). We are OOS, but are in a neighboring state that receives reciprocity.

DS received his first acceptance last night to Earlham College. He applied early action pretty much everywhere, but the deadlines are all Nov. 1 or later, so we are very surprised to hear back so soon! He’s very excited to have an acceptance, with decent merit money included. However, other schools are higher up on his wish list. Time will tell, but it was a wonderful feeling to watch his face when he opened the portal and saw the virtual confetti and streamers.

Wow, @CTCape, that was fast! Congratulations to him!
