Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

Schools or applications? :smiley:

UCs - 5
CSU - 1 or 2
Common Ap - 3 each with their own supplement

Scholarships - right now there are three that are due this month.

Eleven for my dd20.

@jdhMom: I think we’re down to 6: 1 rolling, 2 EA, 3 RD.

@jdhMom my D has applied/auditioned for 19 schools. She has been rejected from 2 dance programs so far, accepted into 3 dance programs so far, and into 4 colleges academically (one of those was one of the dance rejections, though). She also pulled 2 of her apps after her audition but before she heard form either side of admissions. She still has 5 auditions to complete. In all of that, she has 1 admission that is for both academics and dance- so far. It’s all so complicated by the audition process. Our goal is for her to have 3-4 schools to choose from in the end.

@milgymfam I can’t imagine having the extra layer of dance auditions. Good luck to her. I have a friend whose daughter is a freshman dance major at Pace and is loving it.

Thank you! Now imagine all of it with the added layer of being a full figured (ballet) dancer and you can guess why she auditioned for so many schools. I couldn’t imagine putting myself out there knowing that most admissions officers will not even truly consider me. Every acceptance is a huge win for her.

7 schools have been applied to. Only one did not need an essay/supplement. There might be 2 more schools S will apply to in the RD round.

My D applied to 3 schools: A safety, a match and a high reach. Unfortunately she ll get the results late December so she needs to prepare all the RD apps before and more or less all have supps. Maybe 7 more apps? However the actual ā€œapplyingā€ will depend on the EA results.

We actually just gave D20 part of her graduation gift, a new laptop that she will use at college. I saw a deal I couldn’t pass up…and her school-provided Chromebook was just not doing it for her anymore. I figure this will give her time to get used to it before college starts, as it is a 2-in-1, so she can play around with the writing feature.

What are your plans for a grad present?

@milgymfam the whole dance piece really does make it all so much more harrowing. While I wouldn’t describe my dd as full-figured, she is very curvy and does not have the conventional slender and willowy dancer body, nor is she crazy bendy/flexible. Her focus is contemporary and choreography, which can be more welcoming of diverse body types–but not always. We have been encouraged that there do seem to be programs out there that are more welcoming, and we’ve made a point of asking direct questions about body issues at schools–because the LAST thing she wants is to be in a place where she is getting the message that she needs to be skinnier. She is really attracted to programs that emphasize developing the voices and skills of each individual dancer rather than producing a more uniform look and product.

Good luck to your dd! It’s a lot of balls so keep in the air at once, and a lot of their hearts they have to put out there again and again.

@bigmacbeth
A laptop will definitely be in the plan but will wait till DS knows which college to go to then do the purchase.
DS is getting a new phone for his birthday coming up soon.
We will give him a laundry service for his college years as well.
Want to see other ideas!

@jdhMom 5 - all EA, 2 required no additional supplemental essays.

DD applied to 13 schools so far. 3 Safeties, 4 match and 6 reach schools. The 4 match schools are all our NY state university and affordable. The reach ones are not all academic reaches but they are financial reaches. Some are RD but she sent in the apps already anyway since she needs merit money to go to the private schools. She already got one acceptances at a safety but they would have to come up with more money for her to go there. There were lots of supplemental essays and she is working on scholarship essays right now.

I have not given any thought to graduation gift yet. There is already a lot to pay for. The senior trip is $2,100 plus spending money, then there is the prom which I am budgeting about $1,000 (that includes, prom ticket, gown, make up, hair, nails, limo, pre prom party, after prom party).

Anyone order the graduation pictures yet. I keep waiting for better deals. There was a 20% offer and now there is a 25% offer, I think I will wait a little bit more. Maybe they will be 30% or 40% by Christmas then I will order.

Regarding graduation present:
As they prepare to leave the nest, we offer to take our kids on a week-long trip, just with Mom and Dad. We are a family of seven, so the time devoted to just the one kid is precious. D18 chose Iceland. The three of us had a blast together. It’s not so much the destination, though, as the quality time spent with the new young adult. :heart:

@ShrimpBurrito. That is a wonderful family tradition.!!

We were planning to get DS a new musical instrument for graduation as he’s been renting one of the high school’s. But he’s now going to Europe this summer so we may not do both. It will depend on what college he’ll be attending and what we’re paying in tuition. We will also get him a new computer; hoping for Black Friday deals and it’ll be a Christmas present.

I have no special graduation gift planned. He’s got a three week long hiking trip planned for the summer that I’m paying for, so I guess that can be it. We were going to wait until he decides on a school before getting a laptop because at least one of them offers special perks from buying from the campus store…although I guess we’ll know by then, so I could do that.

D20 will be spending three weeks in Europe next June, right after her graduation. At first it was going to be a week trip with mom and dad before she moved on to college, but then decided to reward her on her hard work by going on a special trip without us. She had been working to stay in the top 10 of her high school. When I saw how demanding all this college application process was, we told her that no matter what she was still going on the trip. She was really happy and motivated to made all the EA deadlines!

@makemesmart A laundry service, wow. I am guessing there is something behind that gift, it’s quite something! I will give my kid laundry soap! :smiley:

We didn’t wait for Black Friday or school deals because they never sell what we want, and feel we have to ā€˜settle’. Best Buy does have occasional student deals that are pretty good sometimes. Learned this with D17.

My two are going on an organized school trip to Europe right after graduation, which we are paying for. Also, their birthday is the day before graduation. So I will probably buy them a laptop for college, like their siblings. Of course, what exactly will depend on what school they choose. One twin is already asking for dorm stuff for Christmas. I told her we could save this for birthday requests from grandmas since they will need ideas for that anyway. I can tell they are thinking ahead to next year, however, since one is also requesting some things like new rainboots, raincoat, all weather-type wear. Maybe she’s considering the large campus afterall? :wink:
