DD20 has applied to 5 schools, all EA or rolling. She has 3 acceptances so far and waiting to hear on 2. One will hopefully be soon and the other not until end of January. She still has two honors applications to do. Hoping to take care of them during the Thanksgiving break as we’re not traveling. She also has essays to write for scholarships she’s eligible for through Girl Scouts. They’re not a ton of money but we figured since she got her Gold Award and has been a scout for 12 years she should try for the scholarships she meets the requirements for. That’s due at the end of January so thinking it’ll be tackled during the Christmas break.
S20 applied to 5 schools - 1 ED and 4 EA. Plan is to apply to another 8 more RD. Hoping ED works out!
Any advice on alumni interviewing is appreciated!
@Octagon
DS just did his alumni interview and it went well according to him. During the communication process, the Gentleman asked for DS’ resume to be sent to him prior to the interview and told him that he didn’t really care about his GPAs/test scores. The interview itself was mainly about him as a person, the courses he has taken, and his ECs. Very relaxed and friendly. They both love classical music so they had a lot to talk about just on that.
It looks like the few alum interviews I have heard about is all like this, relaxed and friendly.
@makemesmart Thanks for the feedback. Good to know that it is fairly relaxed.
D20 applied to 11. Finished the last one tonight. She’s had 3 acceptances to rolling admission schools that give good merit money. Her list included 4 reach schools and the rest match/safeties. She was going to do an ED to one of her reaches but decided she didn’t want to get locked in without seeing the merit money offers.
D20 finally got her first acceptance tonight! SUNY at Buffalo Honors College. It was not unexpected but it is exciting to have that first one in her pocket.
@AngstyMe I don’t have any advice but if you get any, please share because I’m going crazy too! I thought ED would make things easier by knowing so soon. But I think it’s just compounded my anxiety for my daughter.
For so long we preached that she shouldn’t have a favorite, and she was happy to abide by that. Then we had a serious talk about ED and gave her the green light so she went for it. The process requires her to be sure that she loves that school the most; but what if it doesn’t love her back? And she’ll probably find out right before Nutcracker and in the midst of finals. Ugh.
I guess it will still be better to know sooner rather than later, either to celebrate or to move on and get excited about other possible schools again that have taken a backseat in her mind for now. But I’m already starting to think about how to comfort her if it’s a no, and what else to say other than “I’m so sorry kiddo.”
DD20 applied to 18 schools total. EA and RD were all done already so that she could get scholarship applications done as well. We are looking for merit scholarships as we are middle income as well. She got 4-5 fee waivers. She has two acceptances so far at two safeties.
Congratulations to everyone whose students have gotten offers of admission so far!
My S20 only applied to two (rolling admissions, large public) universities. He has been going back and forth in his mind about possibly applying to a third school, but he’s very happy already. As long as he’s still happy in May… and next September… we are content to leave it there.
We still have to wait a few months to find out about any possible scholarships, though.
We submitted CSS on Nov 15 on college board site for ED and other EA school that had Nov 15 as priority deadline.
Also I noticed that College Board was asking for IDOC for additional taxes, W2 and 1099, etc. to be submitted today and we uploaded those as well today.
However, ED school is showing as:
Complete CSS Profile from College Board 11/18/2019
Question is that did we miss the priority date in this case?
What is deadline for IDOC to be submitted typically?
Thanks.
Wow. Lots of ED apps going out in this group.
D20 has submitted 13 applications (rolling, EA, RD) and still has her reach schools to finish up, hopefully by the end of the month, later since they required more work/focus and had later deadlines. We got a handful of free applications so that helped, and at middle income as well, we want to make sure she finds a place she loves that works financially. Crazy, it’s so many apps and so much work for her but it’s such a major decision and want to make it right.
@Octagon My DS had his alumni interview and he said it went very well. Interviewer asked about why he was interested in the school so your S should be prepared for that. Also asked about ECs and internship and if my DS thought he would continue those at school. I think in general, it was about how he would contribute to the community. He said it was fairly casual and conversational. Good luck to your S!
DS has applied to 2 with 5-7 to go depending on early decision. He already heard from the SoM studio professor who invited him for a sample lesson. That went very well.
@Driverof3 I hear you on dreading a possible rejection. We too counseled on not having a favorite and the reality of the acceptance rates at some of the schools on his list. He said he understood and has good safeties/matches, but I’m not sure he’ll take the news well.
@sibpuri DS got a reminder email from the school on the IDOCs. When it was all received he could see a confirmation on the college’s portal. If you don’t see it there, I’d suggest calling to confirm they’ve gotten the required documents. I did notice that some want IDOC upload and some want them directly mailed.
DS20 applied to 8 in early round (1 ED; 7 EA) - no results yet. Working on couple more for Dec 1 RD deadline. He still has a few super-reach school apps in RD round - yet to start working on supplements for them. ED app is a last minute decision - its a reach. We said yes to ED with the condition that DS should continue working on his other/RD apps - that is not happening now (think he is waiting for ED decision).
None of DS’s schools require an interview but he has couple in RD that have interviews - lets see how it goes.
It’s pretty common for kids to wait on ED results without starting on other apps, then scrambling over winter break if things don’t come through. That would trigger my anxiety, but we found that there are not too many schools with good football teams that do ED.
S had his first alumni interview last weekend and he said it was more conversational, less interview-like. Interviewer asked questions based on what S was saying. There was no formal question of why do you want to go to ___. I’m thinking it must have been apparent in the conversation they were having.
Also, S got notification from one school that non custodial parent financial documents were requested ( he doesnt have a non custodial parent ?) and another school we got picked for verification. When S comes home today we will work on that.
DD20 submitted the Univ of California app last night - phew! That was app #5 (already submitted 2 EAs, 1 rolling, one RD). Will be visiting 3 campuses over the next week, and then she can assess how many more RDs she really wants to churn out.
D20 has applied to 10 so far (1 rolling, 6 EA, and 3 RD). She wants to apply to 6 more. If she ends up applying to all, it would break down to 5 super reach, 3 reach. 6 target, and 2 safeties. She was accepted to her rolling but it is currently the bottom of the list with the potential to move up if she gets into their honors college. The 6 she hasn’t applied to yet are all in CA or international so I am okay with her not applying ? as they are far, far away. Just hoping merit $$ come in as we can’t afford the EFC that FAFSA gave us.
DS20 submitted to 6 EA schools and 1 left to submit for RD (only offered ED, not EA).
The earliest results won’t be in until Mid-December with some EA schools not until the end of January.
Waiting is hard.
DD20 applied to 11 schools, one ED, 2 EA, and the rest RD. She has been accepted at one of her EA schools. Her apps were done by mid-September as she is a double major at many schools with performing arts, and needed to be prescreened for some auditions. So far she had auditions at two schools (including the school she was accepted at and the school she applied ED at) and passed a pre-screen for a third, which will take place in mid-January. She was denied an audition opportunity to one school, but she is still in the running for an academic admission there (although it was her last choice school and she was admitted to another program that costs a third as much, so I don’t think she will go there).
She has needed to work incredibly hard to get all of the required materials in – I think she has had 18 essays, and 11 videos. She has an on-campus interview later this week, as well as a tour of the one school she hasn’t seen yet.
She should hear from her ED school by December 15. Hoping for positive news for her and for your children as well.
