Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

I don’t know that I would say this is a trend. For less selective colleges like Indiana EA, it seems everyone from my D’s upper middle class HS got in. Same with Tulane ED, tons of kids got in that we know of in our region. Even for the most selective colleges, there were several Northwestern, Rice, Stanford (1), Duke acceptances but still probably in the same percentages as the overall national EA/ED rates. We don’t have a lot of kids applying to the ivies so I’m not sure many applied SCEA and such to those colleges.

@fretfulmother - I can’t speak to national trends, just what I see at my kids’ HS. In the past few years I think the only ED acceptances to an Ivy were for recruited athletes. I have seen lots of EA acceptances, but the kids we know only really apply ED to the most selective schools.

DS finally got an acceptance and it’s his #1 choice. He’s applied to 3 and has 4 more RD to go. Gosh it feels good to get one done! The waiting seemed forever! There’s been so much good news posted here and I’m glad to finally chime in. Congratulations to all of those with acceptances and good luck on pending decisions.

OK, here’s something that threw us through a loop. DD20 is working on a scholarship application for one of her colleges, and one of the questions asks her to list all the other institutions to which she has applied. How common is a question like this? Either in a scholarship application or an interview? She is going to be honest, but I was wondering – in the near future, are we to expect most colleges to ask her this question? Sheesh.

D20 was just asked this question at an honors college open house. They seemed genuinely interested in who their competition was, and wasn’t writing anything down. D17 was asked in interviews. It was a little weird, but I don’t think it means anything. You don’t have to give them ALL up, but mentioning a few can’t hurt, IMO.

She’s going to list all of them, because that’s specifically what the question asks. This just took us both by surprise. Good to know that it’s not exactly uncommon, so my dd can be prepared.

Back here after a hiatus. DD has gotten acceptances to UPitt and UMBC. She likes her safeties first. She heard from both schools before any decision for DS and both were success. Good news. Except for DS’s first college results happens to be his “dream forever” ED school UPenn. Results was supposed to be out at 7pm and my DS decides to go to gym calm his nerve. I am recovering from flu at home and DD starts to panic to find out DS’ result as the clock ticks 7. DS’s phone starts getting bombarded from everywhere - home, friends…I was so tempted to check, but was not ready to face him if he did not get in. DS comes back home 7:30 and I said a prayer ready to help him write rest of his applications for RD. He opens the portal as the whole family hurdle around. He clicks the link for status update…

Confetti on the page can only match the tears rolling on my DH’s face…I was still in shock, while DS smiles and DD dances behind him. Could not not share this story.

Today is another day. DD is now super motivated to apply to some highly selective school, which she may not want to attend!

@junk4rp So exciting! Congrats to your family!

@amsunshine D20 was asked at several interviews. Her split second decision was to list all of the similar schools she visited and did not end up applying to. She figured the interviewee would get an idea of what she was looking at (all small, LACs) without spilling the beans of what she was seriously considering. I thought she was pretty quick on her feet!

@junk4rp Such wonderful news! Congratulations!

Congrats @junk4rp! That was exciting to relive!

Son was just accepted to the University of Denver with very strong merit scholarships!! He’s at student council right now so we will have to celebrate later.

He is already accepted to the UMin and has RA applications into both American University and George Washington.

I’m guessing we are done. He loved the campus and who doesn’t love the Rockies??

If Denver didn’t pan out we were going to change to ED2 at American. It was his #2.

@roper1313 Congrats on UDen! So, can you move your RD (RA?) app at American to ED2?

@bigmacbeth he has received correspondence that said he can go into the portal and change from RD to ED2.

We were also encouraged to consider making the change when we were at our campus visit this fall.

For those with ED acceptances, how fast did you withdraw your other apps once your child accepted the offer? My D accepted her offer on Sunday night but still hasn’t withdrawn her other apps and is getting acceptances (e.g. SDSU yesterday). I told her to withdraw but she has been busy and dragging her feet. I’m hoping she has time today to do it but I have a sneaky suspicion that part of the issue is she is waiting to get Tulane EA results tomorrow as a lot of her friends applied EA and/or ED there and she is curious. Again, speculation on my part but I think she should withdraw immediately. Thoughts?

@socaldad2002 Back when my D17 had made a decision I remember it being a pain in the butt at some schools to withdraw her app. They sometimes make it very difficult, so in the end, she did not withdraw at several schools because she couldn’t figure it out. I wouldn’t worry about being in a big hurry. Schools have their numbers all figured out, so a student withdrawing vs. never responding doesn’t really affect them. Some people think that it could affect certain named scholarship results if that is something she is in the running for. I would target those first. But simple admits a few days or weeks won’t make a difference. These are my opinions, anyway.

@socaldad2002 - She should withdraw immediately. I can understand the curiosity to see if she is admitted elsewhere, but to what end? Bragging rights? Right now she is batting 1000 - time to share the wealth.

We tried withdrawing from one school and it was impossible to figure out how. DS finally emailed the admissions and they told him he might still change his mind and they’d leave it. Since then they have sent another scholarship. LOL It doesn’t matter, he has zero desire to go to this school and applied by accident (don’t ask).

@socaldad2002 - I wouldn’t worry about it. I really doubt it will make any difference for other kids whether your daughter withdraws immediately, or next week (but do have her do it next week, just to cross it off her To Do list). And I say this as a SoCal parent of a kid who applied EA to Tulane. :smile:

And, congrats on Duke! That is awesome.

@FourAtShore thank you!
