Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

Our daughter withdrew about a week after receiving ED acceptance. She emailed her GC for help understanding how to withdraw her other applications and it was pretty straightforward.

She received a lovely letter from an Admission Officer at another school that had accepted her congratulating her on her acceptance to her ED choice. I must admit that made me think very highly of the first school (and I will be keeping it in mind for my other children when they are looking).

My D19 didn’t pull any of her apps or turn down her acceptances until we had the full financial aid award settled from her ED school. It took about a week. She then contacted all the other schools immediately even though my husband had hoped to see a few of the eventual results. One school in particular, NYU, made it SO hard to pull her app. That one took almost a week in and of itself, but the rest were simple- either an option in a portal or an email request.

Our GC gave my son two days after Ed acceptance to email the other colleges to withdraw apps. I think if you are waiting to see if your financial aid is sufficient then you don’t have to. It was hard to withdraw them, but nicer for other applicants.

On a separate note, D received a nice hand-written note from the ā€œambassadorā€ (student tour guide) from USC which I thought was a nice touch we hadn’t seen at other colleges we toured.

@socaldad2002 My daughter withdrew her other apps within 4 days. She wanted to wait to hear from Villanova EA, but decided end of December was too far away. For two applications it was easy to withdraw because they had a tab to click on the application portal, but for the other three she had to email the admissions office. They all responded within a day with very nice emails wishing her the best at her new college. Only one (Middlebury) asked if she would share which college she will be attending, so D emailed her back with the name.

I would not just leave them open. The way I see it, there are kids out there who are still hoping to get accepted to that college. They should not have to compete against students who will obviously not attend. Competition is too fierce for that.

We haven’t gotten around to withdrawing apps from other schools yet although in my kid’s case the 3 that are out are all to quite large schools (2 UCs still of undetermined status plus admitted at U of MN).

My DC got accepted to our state flagship, Binghampton Univeristy. We are beyond thrilled to have a great affordable option. 7 acceptances so far, many with scholarships but Binghampton is at the top of the list as it is the best and most affordable option even with the merit scholarships.

Great news @holychild ! Congratulations!

@holychild
We are in the same boat - very happy with Bing. Yesterday was a good day. 5 acceptances so far.

S20 got deferred from Michigan today - no big surprise! I am shocked to see they want another essay. He’s already done several for their common app, and then several more for their Ross Business portfolio. What else does he have to say? And he hasn’t exactly grown as a writer in the past 2 months.
He also got into Tulane today with a nice merit scholarship! We’ve ordered in some cajun food to celebrate!

@NYC2018nyc Sorry about UofM. They defer a lot. Congrats on Tulane, though! How many more is he waiting for?

Thanks @bigmacbeth just waiting to here from 1 more. He was planning to do 2 more apps for RD, but since they haven’t really been started yet I’m not so sure!

DD got into Tulane today also. Honors program too. No more schools until late May, but several special programs and scholarships to come in January and February. But this lets us go into the holiday break calm and relaxed.

D20 has been accepted to 5 so far, waiting on 3. Pepperdine comes out tomorrow.
She got good news about another honors college and a scholarship this week. Not sure why do many decisions release right before Christmas, but thankfully she has had a good week. Hoping it continues tomorrow.

Finally an acceptance came through with amazing merit: Case Western with 30,000 merit per year! Holy Cow! 3 Acceptances now. S20 got deferred from ED - tough but he is resilient.

DS got into Tulane too - honors and merit award. Nice end to the year. Waiting for others to come in by March.

Congrats to all for the acceptances. For those who have not get any yet, hang in there.

CONGRADS to all those with good news and extra holiday treats to those that have not gotten the answers they want. Hoping for good news here tomorrow. 4 for 4 thus far but this next one would sting badly if it does not go as hoped.

D20 got mixed news today. She applied to U Michigan in their Dual Degree program for SMTD (Musical Theater) + LSA (math). Was accepted to LSA, but denied to SMTD. She’s still very excited about the acceptance to LSA (was expecting a deferral). It’s probably top of her list at the moment.

Another Case Western Acceptance here with $32,000 in merit. Hoping for more money from CWRU as it is the number one choice. 8 acceptances so far all instate or OOS with merit. I love EA. I wish money was not an issue.
