Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Il was closed Monday and Tuesday for cleaning after a student was exposed to the virus last week. I have not heard whether that student has tested positive or not, but school reopened today.

Thanks @Mwfan1921 . Hope they clean fast and don’t cancel the SAT just two days away!

Yep, just happened to us today. Picked my daughter up after practice and as we were driving home, we got a phone call from her high school that effective immediately school is closed until Tuesday! They said a “school community member” showed signs of the virus and was being tested. As a precautionary measure, school is closed while awaiting test results (um, five days?!). If it comes back positive, they will inform us what the next step is.

@homerdog, a little scary, hitting so close to home.

For the most part, in our town, you’d think that nothing was happening. No diagnosed virus for more than a hundred miles. We went to a ballet tonight with a packed audience (part of the local directional’s visiting cultural events series). It was so nice to watch the flamboyant and colorful Don Quixote on this foggy March night and forget all these troubles for a
while (except for nagging D and H not to touch anything unnecessarily and to wash hands the moment we got home).

But when back home I saw that the school board finally sent a notice that it was monitoring the situation and that any out-of-state field trips are cancelled indefinitely. In-state events and competitions are still on (for now) but any parent can pull a student out without penalty or consequence to the student on a team. Good to know! But I wonder how long it will be before more things get cancelled. Just seems inevitable. Like life on hold. Maybe we’ll all finally learn to slow down. I’ve been wishing to stop time a bit, though not exactly in this particular way!

@homerdog Our D/S21s’ school shut down today. Apparently, someone in the “school community” was in the proximity of 1 of the 3 cases in our state. So, they’ve closed the school until at least after spring break (and may go online then), cancelled prom, and made no mention of how they will teach the kids the 7 days worth of missed material. Spring break wasn’t until the following weekend. D21 was a teary: “this is an important yr, how will this affect grades/AP testing (will they even get through the material), my ECs, etc.” The school’s reaction does seem extreme. H thinks they could have closed through weekend and tested the contact (assuming they could find a test kit!).

All NJ schools have been closing or doing 1/2 days to prep for going online. A coworker is out the rest of the week because a classmate who was recently in NYC has flue like symptoms- no positive test yet but closing school for the rest of the week.

I’m getting annoyed that we have the capability to work from home and the bosses won’t let us because they don’t like it!

Our NJ public has not closed or done half-day prep. However, a plan was communicated for home instruction so we’re ready to move in that direction (which I image is going to happen in the next few days).

I’m probably in the minority on here, but I think that going online after spring break for the rest of the semester would be a positive for grades and AP testing (assuming AP tests get taken). Our private high school has been making rumblings about going online after break, which is 2 weeks long and starts after this Friday.

I just have a hunch that the workload will decrease. Also, focused study time with the prep books in April without having to worry about classes will make our hs junior’s 4 AP tests in early May much easier.

All our kids friends are still around, the biggest loss will be the fancy lunches everyday. Sure, there will be some loss of content that may or may not be compensated for by independent study with more time, but I see this challenge as a valuable learning experience in and of itself. Trying to see the silver lining in all this

@homerdog, sorry to hear that your NC/VA trip is cancelled. We were planning to head to New England in late April, but the schools we were going to see have also cancelled classes and admissions events. I am keeping my fingers crossed that all of these schools will be back in session in the fall, but I have to agree with your assumption that ED numbers will be way down next year.

As of now IIT is the only test center in Ilinois to be closed, but I recommend checking this site even the morning of: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/register/test-center-closings. It says you will receive an email if your center is closed, but during the fall teacher strike, they cancelled all public school testing centers, and no one I know heard a peep about it until they were in line the morning of the test.

Since the in-school PSAT was cancelled during the strike, students could apply to use the in-school SAT in mid-April to qualify for NMF. As our D said, it’s been a rough year. But my heart really goes out to the seniors!

My S21’s school hasn’t closed yet. But they’ve effectively shut down the campus, and all events are cancelled. Field trips and competitions are suspended for now. S21 is the captain of his tennis team, and has been told they won’t play matches, but they still will have practice. Guess they are hoping it blows over soon. Closing is problematic, since not everyone has Internet access (we’re in a rural suburb that has horrible access services), so I’m not sure what they are going to do about that.

As expected, D21’s interviews, visits, etc were cancelled for two out of the three colleges we have on the calendar for March and April. The third college is canceling large events but not individual info sessions and tours. Well, they are, but only for two weeks, with plans to reopen to the public during April.

We had an Orbitz reservation for the trip to CO. United on the way to Denver and JetBlue on the way back. Orbitz has gone AWOL and you can’t reach them by phone, email, link, or “virtual assistant.” JetBlue allowed me to change our return reservation easily and quickly and without fees on their website. United’s website won’t allow me to make changes, so I am on the phone with them
have now been on hold for over an hour (thank goodness for speakerphone).

The tournament circuit in which my kids participate cancelled this Saturday’s competition. I’ve a feeling April and May competitions will not happen either. Not a surprise and a wise decision.

D21s SAT this Saturday is still a go. The testing center is in a state that has one officially confirmed case and the high school is in the middle of nowhere. That works for us. Crossing fingers.

The high schools around us and the local state college where D21 takes her Spanish classes are not closing or going online (at least, not yet). The community college in the city one hour south of us where D21 takes two other courses is likely going to switch to online formats
we expect the announcement any day now.

So Monday’s 1/2 day is officially moved to tomorrow. I think that’s going to be it for school for a while. I’m wondering if they’re going to take away our Spring Break in April to make up a week, or just make it distance learning. Word is they are NOT canceling weekend activities, so the SAT should be on. We don’t have any confirmed cases, so i think closing school is just a precaution.

Even work got on the bandwagon (kind of). To limit crowds we are alternating work from home so 1/2 the people work from home, 1/2 come in, alternating every day. At least until April.

No public schools have closed around here yet even though we have a few positive cases in the next county. I am guessing we will have positive cases in our county very soon as a man just flew from NYC to Palm Beach even after learning he was positive for the virus. :open_mouth:

My brother lives in Boston and he texted this morning that the public school were closed but I forgot to ask if he knew how long they would be out.

D19 is also at Tulane and has to be packed up and moved out by next weekend. We were supposed to go visit her in two weeks and D21 was going to do a tour, spend a few nights at the dorm with D19 and go to a class or two with her but that’s all cancelled now. Bummer because it is probably one of her top schools if she can get her test scores up - hopefully they reopen in the fall and I can send her to visit in August or early September. We have not done any college visits (except with D19 2 years ago) so looks like we will be cramming them all in the summer and fall if possible.

@momtogkc Sorry about your D19 having to pack up and leave Tulane. I feel the most sorry for the seniors who are missing the experience of their “last hoorah” at Tulane (including their last Crawfest!), but I also feel for the freshman who are missing out on a good part of that exciting first year. As of now, D17 and her 3 housemates (and her boyfriend) are staying in New Orleans. I think she will be happier and have more structure there, especially since S21’s school just announced they are starting distance learning this Monday. Of course, we will see how things develop. I am sure you can do a visit when you do drop off in August. Tulane starts back pretty early - I think August 24th is first day of fall semester classes.

My kid’s SAT test center cancelled with no reassignment. Other test centers have cancelled with reassignment. At this point, I’m surprised the CB hasn’t completely cancelled all tests for this Saturday.

In fact, the local HS district has cancelled all athletic events
So, no more games for my kid’s spring varsity sport. :disappointed:

@sushiritto That stinks about sports being cancelled. S23 is on JV but I would still hate to have it stop now since they have only had 3 games so far. Varsity has a trip to Tampa over spring break that is still on as of now but I won’t be surprised if it is cancelled.

@momandslp Yes - I feel so much worse for the seniors! I was happy to see Tulane is still considering graduation ceremonies, I saw at least one other school who already said they were cancelling it.

D said the people she knows who live off campus seem to be staying. She is especially sad to say goodbye to her senior “great grand big” or whatever they call it from her sorority. She is in a big off campus house - I told D t ask if she could sleep on the couch for a few days.

I know last night they went out to a fraternity party - exact opposite of what they should do but I didn’t expect them to stay put. D said they decided to make this week a Mardi Gras part 2, not the best idea since she came home sick from actual Mardi Gras but I guess they want to go out with a bang.

All of our K-12 schools in our state were just closed by our governor. Wow.

@sushiritto Oh, dear. Sorry to hear about all the disruptions to life to mini sushiritto.
I’m honestly very concerned about all these kids thriving with the school closures and activities that are taken away. If we as adults are struggling to make sense or taken by surprise, how much harder is it on our kids?

Just found out a second ago -D21 was headed to a State competition tomorrow that is has been cancelled. There was going to be a huge send off at her school for the few students that made it. Bummer days, as we use to say when I was her age.

Well, D21 just threw up all over the car right before she got out to go to one of her community college classes. Pretty sure that’s a norovirus and not COVID-19. Ick. Hope she is better by Saturday for the SAT
not sure how many more SAT dates are going to happen between now and early fall, and I don’t want her to have to wait until the last minute.

@JanieWalker ugh! Hope she is ok. I think it sounds more noro vs corona.

Our HS is not closed, yet. I predict it will be soon, same for my office.

I met with my D GC today for our junior parent meeting and she said that schools are already telling them for our "21’s to apply to more reach schools, as they predict more kids will stay home to start because of this.
