Flipping SAT cancelled. I am on the line waiting to talk to someone at CB. I only know this because our school was cancelled today but back on tomorrow because the student who was tested is negative. We got an email from school saying all renting out of space at school is cancelled so I called the district office. D doesn’t have an email from CB yet so I don’t know if she’s reassigned but I want to talk to someone right now.
I’m furious, upset, sad, frustrated. How many times is she going to get revved up for a test and not have it happen? (remember this happened with the ACT when she was sick and couldn’t go). It’s such BS bc school is back on tomorrow but they told me they had to tell CB by 10:00 this morning and they didn’t hear about the test until noon.
Hearing all these stories about important and enjoyable events cancelled is so awful. I feel terrible for everyone.
My spidey sense says that our high school will be shifting to e learning very soon - probably the next two weeks, then Spring Break off. I think my daughter is literally going through the stages of grief over all these changes. She’s not quite at acceptance yet (neither am I), I think we are both stuck in depression.
Social Distancing is happening and will happen. Hopefully it works and hopefully the experts know when it has worked well enough to begin to extricate ourselves from it so that later events (AP tests, graduations) will be held with confidence.
Thanks, I agree. She has been studying so hard for the SAT, and she has improved her scores significantly on the practice exams…it would be a shame for her test center to be one of the few that still remains open (so far) but she ends up not being able to take the exam because of illness. Her current score should be higher for some of her favorites…and I think she can get a much better score this time around if she manages not to throw up on everything Saturday.
Also, what do you mean by having 21s apply to more reach schools? Do you mean they think the high school class of 2021 will want to stay closer to home because of this? Mine loves me but can’t wait to get away when she is older.
@carlson2 which state do you live in? I just got off the phone with our superintendent and I told her I thought that, for the most part, schools were closing for one or two days to clean if there was a positive case. If one state keeps all kids home, I bet we’ll get the domino effect like we did with the colleges.
I’m honestly afraid that April and May SATs are in jeopardy.
@JanieWalker yes that more kids will look to stay home because they couldn’t visit schools. My D is not there yet, she (we) are hopeful that she can visit schools in the Fall. So yes what she is saying is that because more kids may look to stay home a school where they may not have been able to get into before will have more spots when it comes time, and she said possibly more money to give out. I don’t know how they can know that so quickly but that is the prediction.
@homerdog I called the College Board yesterday. Blah, blah, blah. The person just read off a script. A couple days ago, when I heard D’s test center was closed and no reassignment, I went ahead and reserved BOTH the May and June SAT tests. And I probably should book a later one too.
D21 LOVES her spring sport. She’s REALLY disappointed. And her team is in 1st place and undefeated.
All athletic and other activities cancelled for 30 days - and no practices. My S21 hasn’t even had his first meet of the season.
@sushiritto I did that a few days ago too. D is registered for May and June now. And CB is a big joke. I could barely understand her and what I think she said was that our high school counselors might be able to reassign a seat for her if one exists somewhere else. That’s a new one. Pretty sure that’s wrong.
@homerdog we’re cancelled too. I’m so mad! Make them go to school all week with 2000 other kids, but cancel the SAT where they’ll be with a 1/3 that many! All these weeks with the tutor and hitting her target score down the crapper! And the May test is the Saturday before her first AP on Monday. This stinks!!!
I tried to reschedule but our school has officially put anything out so it wants to charge me to change. Guarantee by the time the school updates it May seats are gone at our local school.
@homerdog Same here about not being able to fully understand the CB person, but that doesn’t bother me at all. But the person said that the CB is trying to find an open seat somewhere, but I had to roll my eyes on that one. A, there will be no seats open anywhere locally, and B, if they’re cancelling for some, then they should cancel for all. It’s a virus, it’s going to spread, and keeping kids indoors next to each other for 4-5 hours is really dumb.
Well, I guess admission officers for our kids are going to have to take into account that many of our kids’ extracurriculars (and of course life in general) were disrupted this year. D21 had two straight years of regional championships in one of her extracurriculars. This year that certainly isn’t going to happen. I don’t see the tournament circuit starting up again until at least June, of not later. Most of the tournaments happen to take place March - May.
Of course all of the above seems kind of insignificant to me considering that many of us and our teens may unfortunately know someone who dies or becomes seriously ill within the next month or two. Hope everyone out there stays safe.
Well, our kids are all going to have something to write in their “additional information” section on their common app. Couldn’t take a standardized test. Couldn’t compete in my sport. Couldn’t perform in the play. Couldn’t go to that state or national competition. Good luck to the AOs.
@sushiritto @NJWrestlingmom believe me, I let the superintendent HAVE it. I was furious. Why are kids at school tomorrow but no one can take the SAT 18 hours after the kids leave for school on Friday??? I need to get a grip and not show D how pissed off I am. She likely will deal with this better than I will. Like everyone else who prepped for this test, though, she will feel like it was a waste of time.
Our HS is going to remote learning starting Monday March 16. No school tomorrow, so teachers can finish preparing for remote learning. Word is there won’t be any ‘live’ classes…just assignments…we shall see.
Perhaps CollegeBoard and ACT will add testing dates in late spring/summer. At this point, AP tests are at risk too. I expect many schools will be at least semi-test optional for class of 2021.
I’d be kinda happy if the AO’s would use the PSAT score. I’d be OK with that.
So sorry to hear about the SAT cancellations. That’s really rough. Today was a red letter day for S21:
- rest of robotics season cancelled
- rest of frisbee season seems to be cancelled
- no school for 2 weeks starting Monday followed by one week of online instruction. Right now they are saying students will go back April 6th. We’ll see…
S18 at Davidson also found out today that she’ll be coming home this weekend.
As hard as this all is, I think shutting things down for the next few weeks is the right public health thing to do. It’s hard but we have to wrap our heads around it.
@Mwfan1921 whoa. Guessing we will follow suit.
Probably…still no cases at our school. BUT S21 just came home and said his friend who sits next to him at lunch wasn’t in school today and is getting a coronavirus test?
The kids call the virus ‘rona’. LOL
No NBA, no March Maddness, the MLB is delaying the start of baseball season. Schools and sports shutting down. Travel bans enacted. Employers instructing workers to work at home.
The College Board? Nope, the SAT must still go on. It’s like cockroach. You can’t stop it.
Of course, My D’s March SAT registration is now “poof.” Gone like the wind.
