Interestingly, D21 just received an email from Furman to sign up for a virtual info session compete with a student panel. There are a few to sign up for in March. I think this is brilliant. No reason why schools can’t do an info session via live stream. Not sure how they are doing the student panel but maybe just having the kids Skype in. We had taken it off of her list but I’m signing her up for one of these. I mean, why not? I’m curious.
So I checked D21’s College Board page. She still shows registered for June test, in-school April test and March test. May registration has disappeared. And there’s no longer a tab to “register for SAT”.
At some point, there’s going to be a mad rush to sign up for tests when they are rescheduled.
I hope more of them will do virtual info sessions and student panels! They could also do the same for admitted students to replace the real event.
I will have S21 sign up for Furman’s too, it is on his list.
Our D is still registered for the April in-school SAT, though we’re not optimistic that will happen. I’m assuming IL will waive the SAT requirement for graduation if the in-school tests don’t happen? I talked to D about registering for the June SAT (still available as of now). She thought it was a good idea until we realized, if they are back in school by then (fingers crossed!), it would be smack in the middle of finals. So we’re going to wait to register and hope College Board comes through with other test dates.
We’re feeling lucky that she feels good about her ACT. She still plans to re-take, but under the circumstances I’m not even thinking about it for now. I do feel badly for NMF hopefuls who couldn’t take PSAT during the teachers’ strike. The April sitting would be their last chance to qualify.
DS21 is sick. He went to bed at 7:30pm with a fever, cough, sore throat and exhaustion. I am so worried. It puts the college stuff into perspective for me.
Yup - maybe others will stop complaining about the SAT/ACT now. Hoping for a quick recovery for your son.
Oh @sherimba03 speedy recovery to your son!! He’s a big, strong football player! He’ll come through this fine!! Keep us posted!!
With all due respect @eb23282 this is a college forum. Having the SAT cancelled for the foreseeable future is a stress. I don’t think anyone ever suggested it was more important than a person’s health.
I very much hope it is just a cold or even the “regular” flu.
And prom. Don’t forget the stress of having prom canceled…
@sherimba03 it could be flu? We all had our flu shots but one of my D23s came down with fever, sore throat, etc. on Thursday last week. She got a rapid flu test on Friday, and it came back positive for inluenza A. It was a relief to know, and because we got her tested for flu quickly, so was able to start Tamiflu which has helped shorten the duration of her symptoms. You may want to see if you can get a flu test quickly (our doctor is requiring special measures - people with these symptoms need to wait in their cars and then a staff member comes out to provide a mask and escort them in, so you may want to check with your doctor for their current protocols). I’m not a medical expert in any way whatsover, but I have seen that one distinguising feature of COVID19 vs flu is the shortness of breath (that can be a part of COVID19). I hope your son recovers quickly.
Thanks everybody and please understand I was not intending to diminish the non-health-related stress we are all feeling. Please do keep sharing on this thread and in this forum! I’m right there with you, worried about DS21’s college plans and his future. He was so sad when our school system rearranged spring break so that it’s happening right now instead of April 6-10 which was when we were scheduled to visit University of Florida and other NMF scholarship schools. He told me “I guess we have to cancel our trip now.” I didn’t tell him that I had already canceled it Better to have him mad at the school than me, lol.
He had a rough night but he is feeling better today so fingers crossed…just a few quick comments and then back to discussing SATs and prom, please!
- It took three hours to get through to the Kaiser eHealth hotline last night, so by the time they called me back I was already asleep.
- My sister is a telemedicine doctor (not with Kaiser) and she says she has 7 hours worth of patients waiting to consult with her right now. So I'm not going to try to call Kaiser back unless DS21 gets really scary sick. I don't want to plug up an already overwhelmed system. So unless the govt or Kaiser broadcast a drive-through testing option near me, we will not be getting tested for COVID-19 or anything else - at a doctor's office.
- On my sister's advice I ordered a strep throat test kit on Amazon. It arrives tomorrow. This way I will know if he has strep without having to wait in a packed clinic. Smart!
So back to this thread and our wonderful high school juniors…I’ve already told DS21 not to write anything about this in his essays next year. I’m sure that COVID-19 stories will become the new “I built a house with Habitat for Humanity” trite topic in applications for the next several years.
Different test. D21 was planning on taking both, quite a few of our kids do that. The theory being that they are already in test mode. Plus so many schools superscore or at least consider highest subscores that it makes sense to take another crack.
D21 took it in February and got a 32. I didn’t really want her to take it because she did very little prep, but she figured that is a true “live conditions” practice test and then she would be ready for April. I’m not super excited with 32 (would be with my other kids, but she should be higher) but at least we have SOMETHING to go with.
ACT did not add a new test, they just moved everyone’s April registration to June. That’s a date that theoretically D will be out of state at a soccer tournament, although she can skip a game that morning and take it where ever whe are. More likely though I think we will be home. Our town for some reason does not offer the test on that date, probably due to low demand. My guess is that it is offered locally now.
I had the same thought. Lots of great stories D would be able to tell. But none that haven’t been told by 50 other kids in apps that the readers have already gone through.
A pediatrician told me that our town was already having a late flu outbreak. So I’m sure lots of panicing parents.
Although that makes me happy because it may make them take this more seriously if they think their kids may have COVID-19. We are in a part of the country where the news channel most people watch was downplaying this until a couple days ago. At least now everyone seems to be on the same page.
Just chatted with a friend who’s junior daughter’s first official test was going to be the April ACT. She’s just short of panicking.
I hope he feels better soon, please keep us posted ?
I was just able to move S21’s April ACT to July. The email gave two options…June 6 or July 18. We chose July because he’s supposed to leave for Boys State June 6 (if it still happens lol!).
Our school district just announced closing until April 3. S21 was supposed to take the SAT at school on March 25. College Board website said they are working with partners on rescheduling School Day tests so I guess we’ll wait and see what our high school decides to do about that. I tried to jump on registration him for August SAT but was only giving me the June testing day option. Waiting game it is…
On another note…my husband, the pilot lol, is coming back home tonight…another waiting game to see if furloughs are going to be announced or not
@sherimba03 - hope your kid recovers soon.
email just came in. D is on spring break right now.
Spring Break is extended next week so they can figure out remote teaching. Beginning March 30 attending school in person is optional without penalty , so kids have the choice of remote/online or regular in person school. The decision has not been made to close the school at this time.
Is anyone else’s school giving the kids a choice of online VS regular school? and sounds like the teachers have double the workload
Of course all this could change if a confirmed case pops up.
SAT cancelled in March and May. I’m hopeful many more colleges go test optional.
@TVBingeWatcher2 what state are you in? I’m surprised they’re giving you an option. We are shut down in NJ - all schools, colleges, gyms, restaurants. Curfew from 8pm-5am. Rutgers canceled graduation today.
