Schools could push ED deadlines back too (and the rest accordingly). Too early to know…I do expect we will see more text flexibility next year, whether fully TO or not.
My D was supposed to take ACT in school in April along with the entire junior class-a different date than the national date in April. Are these 2 different tests or the same test? If different tests, it seems like they could just postpone the test to a later date…or offer a couple different test dates in later months like July/August when normally they would just offer 1 ACT test date. Many schools seem to offer an in-school day to take the ACT. I wonder if they could still test at schools on dates even if schools are closed and spread out seating/multiple classrooms…clean down rooms after. My D does have one solid score, but would of course like to try for better and had planned to at least take the April ACT with class and one SAT.
Wow this is certainly a mess!!! In the span of 3 hours, I went from working from home every other day to working from home every day starting next week to working from home every day starting tomorrow!!
I’m so sorry for everyone with the SAT/ACT mess! I can’t believe D actually got hers in on Saturday! Dumb luck. Looking more and more like spring break visits are out. Thank goodness I at least have refundable hotels!
So help me God. If ACT holds tests this summer and College Board does not, I will lose it.
The CB press release does say that they would like to add more testing dates. It’s going to take awhile. And although we are all hopeful we have no idea how long this virus lockdown will last.
P.S. Don’t look at the Spanish flu outbreak graphs of the timing unless you want to be really scared.
^I have to believe College Board will add some dates in the summer for this unusual year, if only to maintain their own cash flow. Plus rescheduling of APs seems likely, even beyond the late May possibilities that they’ve indicated.
@Mwfan1921 CB would lose money, too, if they don’t figure out test dates if/when possible. I’m surprised they are refunding money for that reason. Seems like they should keep our money until they know if they can have new sittings. Refunding our payments makes me feel more unsure that there will be tests.
S19 and D21 just went to their favorite diner in our town to buy a $100 gift card. S19 wrote his common app essay about this diner and it’s a special place for him and his friends. They are a mom and pop owned place and have been here for forty years. My husband grew up here and went all of the time with his friends. They are closing tonight at midnight because of the new rules in Illinois for restaurants and bars. They thought they would try to do take out but think it will be too expensive to keep the place open for the few take out orders they’ll probably have.
I went to a local diner while D was testing Saturday. A diner on a Saturday morning in NJ - I was literally the ONLY person there!!! Me and the staff. So strange.
The new ACT test date is after my son is supposed to report to work as summer camp counselor in the mountains so not great. Of course, camp could change… He took school-based one a few weeks ago - he can dream being one and done but that’s not likely.
I hope that for college admissions for our kids they don’t look at test scores or this semester’s grades. Too much stress, disruption and inconsistencies across districts and states.
If I were queen for the day, I’d say they should evaluate applications based on GPA through Fall Junior year, rigor, essays and recs. That’s plenty to go on to get more or less same type of kids they’d get any other year, honestly. Esp. since we know HS GPA is more predictive of college success than test scores anyway.
Agree re: APs and credit. That’s real time and money for students and families so I don’t know the solution for that…
I see both sides. Testing could become less important because many kids will not have achieved their best score. On the other hand, colleges know that kids test multiple times, so scores already in place before Spring 2020 might be weighted a little more because they collectively represent fewer retakes. Who knows.
MAy canceled
@OneMoreToGo2021 Colleges can’t hold it against students who didn’t get a chance to test. For many, the March test is the first test they take. They absolutely cannot take kids with scores over kids without if this continues through summer.
@homerdog - I am assuming that there will opportunities to take the SAT starting in August 2020 at the latest, which will still be plenty of time even for ED applications. Of course, if next fall’s tests are canceled as well, then we will have a much bigger problem on our hands than whether testing will be accorded more or less weight!
My D18 is saving a year of college tuition based on AP test credits. I was hoping for similar saving for D21. Perhaps if AP tests don’t happen at all the colleges that give AP credits will give everyone credits for achieving a certain grade in the AP class. In other words every one who get an A will be given the a 5 and those who get a B a 4 and those who get a C a 3.
Another problem for us with the new test dates in the summer are the 6 weekends we are going to be (hopefully) playing travel softball from the last week in May until the middle of July. Perhaps her second attempt at these tests will have to wait until August and/or September.
I think AP testing will happen - at home if necessary. Sure, there will be security issues around cheating; these will be glossed over in my opinion.
The reason I say this is because our kid is a part time student at Stanford Online High School, which ordinarily has extremely rigorous guidelines as to who (and under what conditions) can proctor mid-term and final tests. Due to the closing of libraries, schools and colleges where many of the kids had typically taken their tests with precleared proctors, Stanford is allowing parents to proctor the tests on the honor system. It’s not ideal, but the alternative is worse I guess.
I agree, I think they’ll make sure to find a way to make AP testing happen. And I hope they are able to reschedule the SAT (and ACT) dates. S21 took the SAT once in the fall as a baseline and was counting on taking it at least once more, maybe twice. Along with giving the ACT a try. The college search process (multiple tests, in person college visits) is looking a lot different than we’d planned but we are just trying to roll with it. Most of the 2021 kids will be in the same situation.
I was just talking with D18 about How her Clemson On-line course testing will work. She mentioned in that in an online course was already taking they had some program that they had to load that filmed them throughout the taking of the test. However she thinks that bandwidth issues with the whole school taking exams online may make that program impractical. Some professors have said they may limit the testing time to specific hours to limit cheating. Other have said they are going to make the tests harder to compensate for not being able to monitor the students while they take the test.
Lots of ethical, technical and tactical issues of testing taking in The 2020’s.
It is certainly easy to install programs that “lockout” other windows on a machine in order to stop looking things up online. Perhaps this could even lock out router access but I really do not know about that.
Filming and facial recognition software… I doubt it very much. I think the ethical worries will be glossed over, just this once
I honestly think most everything will be canceled between now and July/August.
I told my S21 to assume Boys State (June), a precollege week camp in DC (July) and the rest of this school year to be canceled. I don’t expect to do any college visits or interviews in June either, sadly.
I’m just hoping school resumes in August.
