Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

@OneMoreToGo2021 yeah I wish D had scored well enough on the ACT but she did not and has been studying for SAT and doing much better. She just needs the chance to take a test!!

Running though different scenarios. If the AP exams will not be an option, then hoping Clep will work out.

As I expected, our private high school just announced that it is moving to online distance learning until April 14, and that that date could be extended. The regularly scheduled two week long spring break just began yesterday, and then online learning will begin April 1.

I still think that’s it for this year - no more in-person classes until next year.

Even though it will be disruptive to everyone including my family, I’m hoping we cancel school soon. This seems incredibly irresponsible to be continuing.

I can’t wrap my head around the advice that we limit our kids having contact with friends over the weekend and after 4:00pm, but from 8:00-4:00 they are in crowded classrooms with 1500 other kids.

Seriously, if 20 people have already coughed on you today what’s the point of not having a healthy friend come over? This is like jumping out of a plane without a parachute, but making sure everyone wears knee pads so you don’t skin your knees when you land.

Did you happen to ask about additional tests being scheduled?

@SammoJ i asked about the likelihood of the March tests being moved to a later date and they just don’t know. But if schools are all closed then there won’t be anywhere to have the test. We are officially off until April 6th but some states are official off until April 24th. At this point I feel like we are probably not going back until May 1 at the earliest but likely not at all. I suppose it will be up to the high schools if they will host SATs after this sort of ā€œbanā€ is lifted and they can have kids in the school.

If we are lucky, CB will reschedule the March test in the summer. Maybe kids will have the May test but I’m feeling like that’s unlikely. Right now, and this is all speculation, but I’m guessing June test could happen and then maybe they will reschedule March and maybe May for after that? Gosh. Who knows.

My advice is try to get seats for May and June if you can. You want to have a seat in case those tests happen and, if they get cancelled, you want to have a seat for the date they are rescheduled.

S21 already had a seat in May for a history subject test and a seat in June for a Latin subject test. Since it seems more likely that testing could be on again by June than May (??) I just paid an extra $31.50 to change S21’s June subject test registration to a regular SAT registration.

It’s unfortunate that the June test date doesn’t provide QAS which may have been helpful if he needs to try again in August (which is reasonably likely).

I am still hoping our March test gets rescheduled. In that case, if he does well enough on it that he doesn’t need that June test (not sure how likely that is), then we will probably be so happy that he’s done with the SAT that we won’t worry about the fee, the change in test centers (now we are going to have to take him to a different test center in June than the one we take D23 to that same morning), or the lack of a Latin SAT for S21’s applications.

Also given what is likely to be a rush for August registrations, we’ll sign up in late April before we even know if he’ll need it - so instead of waiting for March scores to make that decision, we’ll be paying for the June switch and for the August test before we know whether he needs either date. I also have a Latin SAT study guide sitting here that I paid for last week when I thought he’d be studying for the June Latin subject test. In the grand scheme of things, the money is far from the most important thing, but it does add up.

One of the schools we were supposed to visit this week (Beloit) was going to try to come back to campus at the start of April, so we jumped on the Southwest fare sale 3 days ago and got tickets to go to their April 10th visit day even though we knew it was a long shot. They just announced that they changed their plans and will be online for the rest of the semester. Flights and hotel cancelled again. For now we’re hanging onto reservations for Knox and Kzoo in May - they are on trimesters so their calendars are different and they’re currently hoping to be back on campus mid April. My gut says that will change.

I’m happy for all the kids who got to get those SATs done this past Saturday. May the scores be what you need in order to be done!!

Working on rescheduling our Spring Break trip now. So many schedules and preexisting commitments to take into consideration. We’re going to have to make two 4 day trips instead of one longer trip - one in early June right after the last possible school emergency day and another one in late June.

Haven’t officially cancelled our airfare simply because it’s been too hard to get through to United and we can’t figure out whether we can just cancel and redeposit the miles with no fee or if we have to work on changes in lieu of canceling to avoid fees. I’m hopeful things will calm down on that front in the next 7-10 days and we can actually get through to a live person at Mileage Plus and figure it out.

May SAT cancelled. CollegeBoard says they will add test dates, also working on potentially allowing students to take AP tests from home.

https://www.collegeboard.org/releases/2020/college-board-cancels-may-sat-response-coronavirus

AP testing from home would be great!

Can someone help me understand why CB cancels May SAT but does not AP exams? I really don’t understand this.

And April 4th ACT rescheduled to June 13th.

Some kids/families count on those scores for college credit, and to potentially reduce college costs (which happens mostly at public schools where some students have enough AP credits to graduate early).

We will see if the AP home option even becomes a reality…it would be difficult to stop cheating for one, and access for low SES students another huge issue.

May cancelled? So I bet in-school April cancelled too. Geez. They should open registration for August test NOW.

And D21 has no email about this. When will CB send info out? From that press release, it sounds like we’d get a refund and not a seat for a make up. That’s baloney. I want them to keep our money and give her a seat if/when they reschedule that test. It’s confusing. Are they refunding March and May and now we all have to try to register for any new tests they add?

@Mwfan1921 , Yes, we are such a family D will attend public uni and AP credits are extremely important to us. I am very thankful the AP exams have not been canceled as of yet. It is very much on my mind. D and I have discussed contingency plans. Clep for Lang and CHem and take AP Calc BC next year instead of this year if it comes to this.

I look forward to seeing how they are going to roll out home administration of AP tests.

At this point, I almost feel like D21 will end up applying to Wake Forest ED and hoping to be done. If their campus is open in the summer, we will walk around and go on a tour. She has a few people in town here who go to WF who we can talk to and a number of CC posters who have offered to have their kids talk to her too. I don’t think the intense search that S19 had will not be happening for D21. I don’t see her applying to a bunch of schools and doing a lot of visits now.

What a mess. We were counting on mandatory school testing for final SAT. I guess I should be grateful that my S21 took the full SAT last June. I haven’t a clue how the lack of availability of testing is going to work with summer pre-reads.

Ok. This is super selfish but I’m hoping grades, rigor, essays, and teacher recs become more important. I wonder what percentage of kids won’t have scores to use. We could be jumping the gun a bit. Maybe summer will bring testing or even early fall. Most deadlines not until November at the earliest. It will just be hard to have a well-researched list if schools still want scores and students are getting usable scores so late in the game. And, if testing does come back a little late, will colleges still expect them? Or will some say they will be TO but then still prefer kids with scores? So much unknown.

Just as this may have a significant effect on those like @TVBingeWatcher2’s D (counting on those AP credits), it also affects homeschoolers disproportionately. With a public school D23 who will have high grades and excellent rigor, I understand the thought of relying more on grades/rigor, and it may very well turn out to be how it’s done, but doing so definitely disadvantages homeschoolers (like my S21) since many test optional colleges are not test optional for homeschoolers, and many colleges put even greater weight on SAT, ACT, SAT2, and AP for homeschoolers. Sigh.

We don’t even know how this will affect recruiting and pre-reads yet!
