Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

Did anyone of your kids receive an email from college board asking to survey on having online SATs at home? Apparently I’m seeing bunch of kids at Reddit having gotten those emails. The email asks them about webcam and mic availability etc. My junior boy didn’t receive one.

Class of 2023 (so current freshman)

W&L 18.6% per the website

Don’t have time to look up class of 2024 stats (but those won’t be final until after any waitlist action)

Hoping the money making scam aka as SAT and ACT is cancelled forever. Hopefully this is an eye-opener for colleges and universities to accept students based on the individualism they represent and not a test score.

That’s data from the current class of 2022…they are sophs now. The data I provided are from the class of 2023, as I stated above. Anal or not, it’s important to use the most current data.

Hard to disagree (I don’t support these orgs either), but we are a long way from college admissions being test-blind.

S got the invite for Williams WOW also. A sign they expect the campus to be opened this fall?

S was supposed to attend a summer program at a college in July and that’s been moved online. I doubt any school will have people on campus June or July.

@Aguadecoco i don’t think there’s any signs of schools being open or not. No school, including Williams, has no idea if they’ll be open yet. Many schools are moving on with their fall plans for now because they have to plan but there can’t be a decision about fall on campus until much later into this summer.

PTO meeting last night. School day SAT that was supposed to be in two weeks was rescheduled to October, reassuring for all the kids who that would likely have been their only standardized test for admissions. Class rank will still be calculated as always and released in June to the rising seniors. The next district over just announced they’d stay closed for the rest of the school year. I expect ours to follow in the next couple of days.

D21 finally looked at the senior packet online that’s due in two weeks, for the counselor letter. Eek she has a lot to do! We have a question to fill out also. I have no idea what to write.

No WOW invite here but D21 did get invited to the Smith diversity fly in in the fall (sent pre COVID I think). She really liked Smith when we toured but financially it would be a stretch now even with the STRIDE scholarship so we shall see. I grew up in the area and still have a lot of family there so she may still apply. She is leaning towards bigger schools though. UMASS is on the list for us.

We did not get it (but did get an AP survey several days ago from College Board). I believe they are sending these surveys to random samples each time, trying to get some information before they make their plans. The fact that this survey has been sent out gives me a bit of anxiety - I just don’t think taking the test at home online with a virtual proctor will work well for my kid. He already has one SAT score but was really hoping to get it 50-100 points up (and can’t easily go TO as a homeschooler). Sigh.

It is my understanding that rolling acceptances to this program start today. D has applied but her portal has not yet been updated. Hoping this program happens, but not holding my breath either.

She has various plans in the works for the summer, all of which may be cancelled. Not sure how she should spend her summer aside from college apps and continued SAT prep if the June test date doesn’t happen.

Just found out Virginia Tech which is near the top of my S21’s list is going test optional (and supposedly even test blind) this year. Good news for my S who’s only taken the ACT once and didn’t hit his target score.

So now there are 3 schools on his list that are TO – Case, VT and WPI. Of course, with the privates, I worry that TO acceptances wouldn’t come with any $$ so we might be priced out, esp. Case. Our top budget is $50k

He’ll still take the ACT again even if it’s this Fall, but this does relieve some of his anxiety so that’s good.

@mm5678 - my D16 went to Smith’s fly-in (think was called Women of Distinction) applied to Smith, got a likely letter, received the Stride scholarship, and even after that scholarship it was unaffordable for me. Which was disappointing for her.

@AlmostThere2018 I feel like colleges are getting on the TO bandwagon. Most of D21’s top contenders are now TO. I have to wonder what percentage of kids will apply to the schools on her list with no scores though. I suppose that’s going to partly depend on if/when there are tests available and if they are online. If few dates are available then I’m sure that fewer kids will send scores and colleges will likely end up accepting a larger percentage of their class TO.

Like you mentioned, there will also be the added question of whether to send a score or not. Typical advice is to send it if the student is 50th percentile or higher but not sure if that will be the best move now depending on the student’s profile and the college. Guess we’ve got plenty of time to make that decision.

I read this morning in the NYT that CB is expected to make an announcement today about the future of the SAT. Keep your eyes peeled. This should be interesting.

@Meddy saw that too! I bet it’s about online options because it is too soon for them to know about in person testing optioms.

@homerdog It must be. Certainly it can’t be that it is being scrapped for this year. Whoever hears first, has to post here STAT

I wonder if an eSAT will be easier than the regular test? If you already have a score you are happy with, would it be worth it to take again?

@flprepaidmom why would it be easier? Wouldn’t they just put some already planned SAT test online? Does anyone think they would write new tests for online that would be different? That doesn’t make sense.
