@Muad_dib So, S19 paints and draws and started taking lessons outside of school when he was eight. He took art in high school for two of the years. Had a pretty decent portfolio and won a Scholastic Art Award and had one of his paintings chosen to be displayed at a youth art show at University of Chicago. The rule I always seem to get when I asked college coaches was to only send art if it’s been out there and been judged. I don’t know if I buy that and it probably depends on what kind of schools your D is applying to.
In S19’s case, almost all of the schools he applied to allow kids to send a portfolio electronically. (You take photos and send them through a website that the college has set up.) You can usually see if a college will look at portfolios by reading their admissions page and I think you can see it on their common app as an option too. Worst case, you can call the college and ask. He did have one school (Vanderbilt) who flat out would not take a portfolio.
S19 isn’t studying art but, on the common app, sometimes schools ask for your three academic interests or possible majors and he always listed math, physics and art. That way, we thought his app seemed to make more sense. He would take an art class at Bowdoin but just hasn’t done that yet. He just wasn’t looking to major in it. He took an art history class and they had an assignment to go to the art museum, find one particular painting and then draw that painting. It was kind of hilarious because he was the only one who really knew how to draw and his professor got a kick out of it. She even let him do a painting for his final instead of a paper since she thought that would be more interesting for him! My point is that your D might get to “do” some art in college even if she’s not studying it and it might be a positive thing and make her interesting to an AO.
Does your D have a way to show her drawings to art teachers at school? They might be able to say whether it would make sense to submit a portfolio. I forced S19 to enter that Scholastic contest and the U of C contest because we knew back in sophomore year that he should try to get his stuff judged to see if it was worth sending portfolios. Maybe there are some art contests out there this summer or fall your D could enter?
Mine typed hers in a google doc and cut and pasted. She did the split screen thing so she could still view the timer.
@Muad_dib I was always that artsy academic kid who did art on the side. I took a bunch of art classes undergrad to help me stay sane and ended up with a minor. I did have a sorority sister who double majored in Bio and Art and did go into medical illustration. Out of school she was hired by a curriculum company. We did not keep in touch, so no clue how that panned out. I ended up getting a M.Ed and teaching art- so you never know!
@Muad_dib - my D16 turned in a slide deck of photos of her “art” - which is actually a self-taught artistic hobby she’s been doing since 6th grade… She applied to her college as an undeclared major (but thought she was going to be a biology major). The interesting thing was that when we met her AO (after she had been accepted and we visited the campus to tour and to say hello) - one of the first things the AO said was “We loved your portfolio.” I bring this up bc your kid’s art does not have to be an award winner or be displayed anywhere - my kid was definitely an example of that… My kid’s art was actually a business for her in HS and even college. And, echoing what homerdog said above - D16 took 2 small sculpture classes in college (with apparently pretty well known NYC artists), and an Art history class and really loved these courses, in terms of having unique experiences she’d never be able to get outside of her college.
@MorseLewis - we have found the following books helpful: The Fiske Guide to Colleges 2020, Fiske Guide to Getting into the Right college, The Princeton Review Paying for College and College Essays Essentials by Ethan Sawyer. Ethan Sawyer also has some good blogs on his website. I am sure there are many, many more.
My S did google doc and then copied and pasted. One thing to keep in mind is, according to my S, it was uploading pictures of your work that seemed to give the most kids technical trouble. College Board came out with a statement saying old browsers might also be an issue so that might be worth checking too.
The language test next week is via an app on his phone which is so crazy to me! I hope that works…
@inthegarden I can tell you as a lawyer who handles medical malpractice cases we use medical illustrations and pay a lot of money for theM. Of course in today’s age anatomical animations are all the rage and we pay even more for those. Often. 30-40K for one animation.
So we had a crazy last couple of days. On Thursday night at dinner I looked at D21 and said “do you feel okay you look pale.” So about 10:30 my wife informs me she had a 101 fever. Friday morning still 101 but took some Tylenol and she came down to 99. She also had a headache but no other symptoms. My wife call the pediatrician and talked to a nurse who said she probably has a sinus infection…huh…and sit tight until Monday and no Covid test for her. My wife explained that my wife took care of her 88 mother and was concerned about whether my wife needed to self quarantine. Unfortunately around us without a doctors order you can’t get a test except at Rite Aid but they will not give to anyone under 18.
I told D21 don’t worry about Apush test since you arent feeling well you can take the makeup. She said she felt okay and wanted to get it over with. So she took it and felt like she did okay.
She ate dinner and seemed to be doing okay and with Tylenol her temperature was in the 99 range. My pediatrician sister in law said because of low percentages of covid in our area especially at her age to sit tight until Monday. However, at about 11PM her fever was at 103. We gave her more Tylenol and she has been sleeping since. My brother who an internist suggested we call the telemedicine arm of the big health care entity and that they may be willing to give order for test.
We are of course concerned about D21 but feel like we need to know if she has it not because it will change her course but rather whether we should be self quarantining because we were exposed to it. This is the reason why testing is so important. Not to treat those that have it but to make sure those that have been exposed self-quaratine.
@burghdad I hope she feels better soon. What a pain about the test, I got a text a few weeks back from the telemedicine saying they are offering Covid test after a consultation. So definitely try that.
@burghdad – I hope your D is feeling okay and keep us posted. Yes, agree the household should keep your distance from your mother-in-law til you learn more. Fingers crossed!
@burghdad Oh no! No other symptoms? I would definitely do a telemedicine appointment. If she’s been social distancing, it seems unlikely that she has Covid but I guess if anyone has been outside the house even to just shop then it’s a possibility of course. I hope tests are plentiful if she needs one!
@burghdad So unnerving. I hope she’s feeling better today. Definitely get the telemedicine visit and request a test - maybe you can get one for everyone in the family due to potential exposure. I know you said you were in a lightly impacted area, but they are giving out tests pretty freely these days where I live.
