Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

@burghdad I don’t consider UT Austin or even A&M in the same category as a school in “The South” because of the diversity of students in TX. We live here and our S will probably attend UT.

We are a Latino family and live in a area that is majority Latino and we don’t ever encounter confederate flags or people of the mindset that find the flag appropriate. I understand racism is everywhere, but I don’t want my S in an environment where he is more likely to experience racism and I am basing this on past experiences we have had.

Ruled out here for sure. Interactions go beyond just trying to find your “posse” on campus. There’s airports, stores, cafes, restaurants, moving and storage companies, GSI’s, professors, malls, transportation, etc.

Nope.

@NateandAllisMom Don’t worry about the essay, really. There have been so many questions on CC from kids who did great on the multiple choice and were disappointed at the essay score. They are scored according to a rubric and graders are moving very very quickly. It is not a meaningful test of your kid’s writing ability, especially if there are other ways to demonstrate it. If he retakes the SAT, I would dispense with the essay. If not, I would send the score he has if the the composite is at the median or above for accepted students.

D19 is politically liberal and goes to Emory in Atlanta, a blue city in a red state. She is happy there.

@mamaedefamilia and @Suave123 thanks for your input. I didn’t know it was a common problem. Came as a total surprise to us, and I did warn him about quick rubric grading but alas, I guess it went in one ear and out the other. I’m confused about why our counselor was advising this. She’s pretty sharp but sometimes I find better information here and on my favorite podcasts.

Rice and Tulane are currently on D’s list otherwise nothing in the South and I don’t think either of them really count as Southern schools.

We are coming at it from a different place than many of you. I’m not trying to shield her from different views. She has spent her life deep in Trump country and I want her to be exposed to something different. She has been accused of being a democrat and a liberal, and they were meant as slurs.

If she ends up in a liberal echo chamber I’m not that worried. She is used to being in a conservative one and having to sort out the ridiculous comments. She can do it there too. I’m intentionally steering her towards places where she will hear different views than the ones she is used to hearing.

She is white, so I don’t have the same potential racism issues to consider that some of you do. I realize that can change what feels safe and acceptable.

BTW if any of you liberals actually want to move out to the conservative parts of the country I sure would appreciate the company!

@dadof4kids we are in a similar situation and looking at it in much the same way.

@sushiritto thanks for the heads up on the SAT registration. Sigh. Why did I think I could count on the 8PM EDT provided by CB? Website is already flooded and unavailable. Good luck to all trying to register tonight!

Wait, why the traffic volume? Is the traffic last-minute priority students, or regular registration students trying to get a jump? There’s another hour and a half. (maybe CB is trying to get the site ready or something, sigh.) Seems a little early for refresh, refresh, refresh.

Edit, it sounds like regular registration opened early. Wonder why CB did that.

From twi tter:

Yes, regular registration opened early. Ugh. I had to do the refresh thing for about 40 minutes but then got through and secured a seat for September so S21 now has Oct and Sept, and that’s all we want. It will probably get even busier on the website after 8PM (Eastern), so I’d try sooner for anyone who is able to do so. Good luck to everyone.

Were you able to register?
I keep getting the error

Temporarily Unavailable.
The site you are trying access is currently undergoing maintenance. Please check back in a few hours. We apologize for the inconvenience.

@nichols51 Were you clicking refresh on the high volume page with the URL that ends in the student’s username?

@Suave123 No, I now have two windows open, one with the high traffic message from before, and now one with the maintenance message. Refresh…

Just 15 mins back, I was able to finish payment and submit it, which gave a system error again urgggg

Based on last week, I didn’t think that 6/3 8:00 PM EST was going to be hard and fast rule, more like guidelines. (Pirates of the Caribbean reference).

Because I’m THAT way, I’ve been trying each day to get a “regular” seating for the October test. And I was hours early on the priority registration a week ago. Once I have something inside my head, there’s a goal to meet or exceed and I’m nonstop.

@evergreen5 Pls let me know if you were successful  I’m still refreshing here…

We got an August seat! Early! We will have to take a ferry to the only available test location, but we got a seat!

@creaky Did you book it now, like 5, 10 mins back?

@Suave123 about 30 minutes ago, after multiple site crashes.

EDIT: Payment went through my bank already. Phew!

@evergreen5 Remember I mentioned few mins back, I went all the way to payment and submitted too, but gave me an error message, but it looks like the payment went through and my junior son received the confirmation email too for October subject tests. Now I’m refreshing the CB page to see if it shows on MySat tab and also checking the credit card if the amount was taken, again fingers crossed…

Edited: Could see the credit card transaction
