Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

I was skeptical of refreshing the high volume page in case it would simply keep giving me the high volume message even once things opened up. So I kept going back one page to where I’d have to click to register again. Get high volume message, go back. Get high volume message, go back. It finally worked. One thing that may have been helpful - I started his Sept registration last week (but couldn’t complete it) so it was saved, and I only had to, therefore, get through the last few pages of the registration (didn’t have to start at the beginning with all those many pages of questions).

Once I got an opportunity to register, the first time it kicked me out right when I got to the end (but hadn’t submitted payment yet). I hit the back button, tried again from that exact spot, and got it to work. I feel pretty lucky.

Ok that’s what I’ve been doing, going back. Sometimes I right-click about ten tabs lol. I did try to register this morning and was stopped at the point of choosing a test center - I wonder if that will come back. I am afraid of having to click continue and then getting cut off.

Mostly the Temporarily Unavailable message comes up, but once in a while the High Volume message comes up, which leads me to believe that registrations might still be going on.

This is crazy, we did spots for the twins, but have to travel one hour plus for the site, Oh well. So do try the nearby ( far away) ones too!

@Herefortwo I was thinking about that. Two here also, but one of them is happy with his current score, thank goodness.

Ok, phew, got it, done. Annoying thing: because I had started Aug earlier, but couldn’t see that on the part of the screen that was showing, it looked like only Sept was available. So I booked that. Then afterward saw that Aug was available. So I booked that too, sigh. He may not need either, but if his list includes that certain school that strongly recommends subject tests, it might be nice to have the option - I’d have to switch the Aug registration later from SAT1 to subject tests. But one thing at a time - let’s see what the APs look like.

@evergreen5 I think the site is up now and working, were you able to register?

This is such hot mess. I got all the way to the payment information and it gave me a payment error with a number to dial for assistance. I dialed the number and it’s not in service. Now I have to see if the payment actually went through or if there will be some type of issue with my credit card. I’m done with College Board. They are a disgrace. My D21 is already in for November and was trying to get an earlier time. She’ll have to make due with that date.

@Mcru1231 It happened to me too, all the way to the payment and submitted too, finally gave me an error message, but sent a confirmation email and a successful credit card transaction too. But when I went back to MySat tab, it said Incomplete Registration again… so redid everything including payment. Now wondering how many times did college board take my money and have to deal with them later if they took more than once… such a mess but registration status says complete now under MySat tab which is a relief !

If you’re willing to continue checking the CB site, maybe up until a couple weeks before the test (there’s a hard date when no further test center location changes can be made) you can “trade up” locations to something closer. I’ve done it a few times over the years.

Has anyone gotten a refund for the June ACT test?

@1Lotus I’ve contacted them twice (D has decided not to take SAT unless there’s an in-school sitting) and have gotten no response.

I was able to register S21 for the August test. No seats were available at our high school, so he’ll take it at a school 20 minutes away. So now he’s registered for both the ACT and SAT this summer, one month apart. Not sure that’s the best strategy, but I’m just hoping one of them actually happens!

Another thread devolving.

The south has amazing people I am sure. And wonderful colleges as well.

Nowhere and no one is perfect.

It’s not really a path toward reconciliation and moving forward ahead as one nation with such belief systems about your fellow countrymen and women.

it seems the south here on CC being loosely defined as south of Illinois and east of California. West of the Ivy League. I get it.

Lots of those southern kids died on a lot battlefields across the world to help us all trash them like this and without a word of pushback. Lots of diversity too.

The food we eat, the gas we use, leading heart research, the sports we consume, the literature we read and the rockets we launch into space have southern connections.

I’ve never lived south of New England and I still don’t think it’s right to trash half our fellow citizens.

Such stereotyping of millions and millions of people. Overlay Texas on US map and it’s nearly the entire eastern seaboard. How can we say it’s one thing or another.

So now that some of us were able to get our kids registered after getting into just short of a fist fight with CB’s website, I remembered that when D18 took her SAT at the school sitting, we had to pay extra for her to take it with the essay. Guess what? No score recorded anywhere. She wound up taking the test again, specifically for the essay. I cant even imagine what the Fall testing will look like, if registration was so problematic.

Yea our local owned amusement park is opening up and D and 7-10 school friends are going Friday. They all agreed to wear masks. The mask are not required so really who knows if they will keep them on. Our county has <1000 cases so amusement parks can open at 50% capacity in Texas phase 3. I am so glad D will get to see friends.

edit: also D and I watched "13th"tonight and “Just Mercy” last nigh and Mississippi Burning tomorrow night. Each night we are finding shows we can watch together to help us both learn and really have some good discusses about racism roots. I highly recommend “13th” on Netflix and Just Mercy on Amazon.

I’m a first generation born and raised South Asian Muslim Texan

Three born and raised Muslim Texan teens of my own.

We’re a pretty well traveled family, socially liberal family. My kids have been to many countries around the world, and go to a VERY diverse Title 1 school. They will all be in state for college, and with all its…err…flaws, I think Texas is still pretty great. As a Muslim I’ve experienced my fair share of hate and ignorance but I know that post 9/11 that would have happened anywhere.

My son wants to apply to Texas Tech in Lubbock, a city and campus I’m not familiar with. Am I little apprehensive…yes…will I deter him
from going if that’s where he decides to go…no. I know plenty of brown Muslim kids who have loved their time at Tech…and TAMU/College Station…and UTSA…and UH. And UT Austin…well that’s everyone’s dream school lol, my kid included.

I suppose, both kids are a product of their environment, but I didn’t steer them to or away from any schools. For both kids, it’s their choice to go to college and it’s location. I am/was only hoping they would choose a quality school.

And traveling to the South for business versus living there for 4 years (or more) is different IMO. So, local laws, ordinances people, etc. will be far less intrusive/noticeable. We all choose to live where we want.

And as I said, we’re not alone here. Our local HS is one of the most diverse in the State. But very few students from our area, either public or private school graduates, choose to attend schools in the South, recognizing that the local UC and CSU system provide an excellent education for a majority.

BTW, one of my older kid’s friends does attend Tulane, but she attended a different HS in another city.

I’m done too.

Edit: BTW, it’s not just the usual suspects like politics, religion, etc., but the weather in the South. Hot and humid is not a good selling point in our book. We visited Florida and the kids didn’t like the weather.

@Momof3B @TVBingeWatcher2 lives pretty close to Tech and knows the school and area well. She can probably provide some more firsthand information for your. I know a few kids who have gone there who were attracted by their generous merit scholarships and have enjoyed their time there.

@kbm770 thank you. I guess I should watch my credit card bill and contact if I don’t see refund within a month? When I registered for the July ACT the charges went through within a day I think. I receive email alerts about charges where card is not present but I don’t think I always get a notice if I get a refund without card present and don’t know how soon I should expect it and want to make sure I get a refund. What is the # for ACT?

No one is “trashing” anyone. Time to move along.
