Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

@inthegarden Congrats on NHS pres! That was quite the competition with 11!!

@inthegarden will your D be attending the LEAD conference with NHS? Our school is scheduled to attend the January one, fingers crossed that they can have it.

@Aguadecoco, I haven’t head of it so I don’t know if her school participates. I’ll look into it, though, sounds interesting.

Welcome!! It’s a crazy process even without COVID-10, so we all need everyone’s perspectives!
ACT has published dates, and they say registration for the fall does not open until July.
Dates are toward the bottom of this page http://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act/registration.html

Welcome, @Solstice155 !

I don’t know about more ACT dates. I do know we are going to cancel D21’s ACT registration for July. She took a practice test and didn’t like it; she prefers to stick with the SAT (she has a Sept date). We also got lucky and reserved an Oct SAT2 date. If those are not canceled, then those will be her last standardized tests in high school (well, she’ll have an AP in spring 2021, but that won’t count for admissions).

Both colleges my daughters attend for dual credit have announced they will be mostly in-person this fall while adhering to all state health dept recommendations. I know that’s what nearly every college in the country is saying, but fingers crossed.

A magazine that ran a feature on D21 came out yesterday. They got the details of her main EC wrong and listed her accomplishment as something much less than what she actually did. Oh well. For college admissions, there is ample proof online of what she has done so I don’t worry about validation. The error is just annoying.

Both D21 and D23 have been politically active since 2016. They’ve donated their own money to various organizations, and they post constantly all over IG. They are both mad at me for not allowing them to travel to areas with huge protests. They’ll have to settle for our small town though. I worry about crowding and COVID-19. Plus we are still under a SAH ordinance. In our teeny town they can protest six feet apart from everyone else. So far, no military or police have shown up to stop anything. We live in a very sleepy area though.

Any chance we can move the ACT/SAT discussion to its own thread? I’m sure it would be a valuable discussion for the 2022 parents as well and I know I’m not the only one in this thread that doesn’t have to worry about this topic because we’re already done. This topic is monopolizing the thread and many other topics and questions are getting buried.

I wouldn’t mind an additional thread about the topic, but I do like including anything and everything in this thread that’s affecting people (even when it’s not directly my issue) because I feel it’s a community. I don’t come her just for information but also to know what different people are going through, even when it’s not my thing at the moment. Right now test-taking is a central concern for many/most of us.

Often I’ve happened upon issues I didn’t know I needed to look for on another thread that just popped up here…like, I wasn’t thinking at all about regular (non-makeup) SAT registration when folks started talking about it here, and I realized I should hop on it.My D may have gotten an email from CB but disregarded it, as she didn’t think about the need to register for a back-up test.

She’s not going to take the ACT but I don’t mind discussions about it. At all. There are always going to be people at different places and stages of high school life and the admissions process. I think we should be patient.

@eb23282 that reminded me- you asked about visiting closed schools on your own! We have done that - it will depend on the school.

Was much more successful at Villanova, where they have security guards stationed to get onto campus. They stopped us, gave us a map and told us where to park to self tour. Unfortunately, it was unseasonably cold the day we went so we didn’t see everything, but it was beautiful and the map at least let us know what we were seeing. The downside - when we got home and I told some people where we went, the common response was, ā€œOh we visited there but it was way to conservative for her and once she heard that girls dress up for class that was itā€. Stuff we can’t see with no students there! It’s close, so we might try to venture back later in fall.

Lehigh was harder because there was nobody there. It’s pretty, but no clue what building was what. We looked online and tried to piece it together. The town looked unappealing, but with no students there could change that vibe too.

At least you get to see the surroundings, does it look like somewhere you can live. And really, it just was nice for us to get out since we were in total lockdown! Let us know where you plan to go! D21 is bound and determined to have 2 reaches on her list but hasn’t really found one that fits the bill yet!

S21 is starting his virtual Boys State program tomorrow evening with the welcoming ceremony. They sent the official tshirts, badge, lanyard etc that he’ll have to wear every day. I’m giving him my home office to use for the week since he’s basically going to be in front of his laptop from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm for the next 7 days on WebEx with only breaks for lunch and dinner. I hate that he’s missing out on being in Austin for the week at the State Capitol and UT Austin Campus, as it was supposed to be. I’m hoping he still enjoys and learns with the virtual format.

After this week of Boys State, we’re thinking of maybe taking some road trips to see empty college campuses lol. At least get out and walk around and see if he even likes the surrounding areas etc. His band leadership stuff starts middle of July, we’re going to try to squeeze in a quick family trip somewhere…anywhere lol!

@Momof3B I hope he gets a lot of of the online Boys town. But I am sorry he is missing the capital and UT. We too are getting out of town July 3rd to go tour empty campuses of Mississippi State and BAMA and check out Huntsville as it a hub for Aerospace industry.

We’ve got our eye on Huntsville and BAMA for one of our D23 twins…he’s talking about aerospace as well and has started ground school for his pilots license. Would love to get your thoughts once y’all have visited!

@mom3boys Let us know how the Boys State Virtual program goes…nice that he has that option. D was selected for Girls State but they cancelled due to covid-no virtual-MN.
@TVBingeWatcher2 @mom3boys We were planning to tour Huntsville over spring break and had to cancel due to covid. Please report back what you learn @TVBingeWatcher2. Thanks

@1Lotus will do!

@Momof3B The summer before 11th grade your son that is interested in aerospace should apply to Texas high school NASA Areospace Scholars program for sure!!!

@inthegarden , what an awesome news! Congrats to your girl!

Thanks for the welcome. ?

@theirchoices thank you for including the link for the 20/21 ACT dates! Fingers crossed we’ll be done after the July date.

@inthegarden congratulations to your daughter for NHS president. What a great way to start the summer!

Yes! It’s on my radar…we will
be doing this for sure!

S21 received an email that Furman is opening for visits June 15. Limited spots available, as each tour is one-on-one with an AO.

^Great that they can resume visits! My initial reaction: one-on-one tour with an actual AO sounds a bit less anonymous than some students might prefer. Probably their student tour guides did not return to campus yet.

Part of what has been disappointing with some of the online tours I’ve watched is that it’s just one person walking around while talking, but with no students on campus, it’s dry and really boring. The personality of the tour guide then plays an overly important role in the vibe from the tour.

I’ve been watching a lot of day-in-the-life videos though those, too, get boring and repetitive after a while - colleges seem more alike than different.

So true, and every potential applicant better have some questions ready!

Who here is bored and wants to opine on vibe? We are sorting through some potential reaches/big reaches. (And these are not all for the same kid.) On the cultural vibe for warmth and friendliness, would this be a correct assessment: WashU > U Roch/BC >> Northwestern > Georgetown, or how might you tweak that? Interested to hear differing opinions.
