Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

Eh all of S19’s friends used earlyscores for years and no repercussions. D21’s friends too.

And I don’t give a flying you know what what CB thinks of us getting scores like this.

Any VPN will work. Simply choose a location that receives scores today.

My D quit her varsity sport senior year and replaced it with academic decathlon. It didn’t hurt her in admissions. It’s all about what they do with their free time that’s important.

The other point is that high school should not be 100% about getting into college but actually taking the time to also enjoy the experience of being a teenager. We get so focused on ECs that “look good to colleges” that we lose sight of the fact that they are kids and should be allowed to explore and enjoy their time in high school too!

@nichols51 and @JanieWalker I also have a rule following kid that will wait until the release date for her scores. I am far less patient but will let her take the lead. Congrats to all who received good scores!

@homerdog He is uncertain about reporting the scores. To him the 3s look bad, the 4s and 5 (and a 4 on APUSH last year) are okay. He wanted to use these scores as an instead-of for Georgetown’s subject test requirement. Our GC has no idea what he should do.

I’m not as concerned about college credit - it would be nice, but not a major consideration. S19 did use it an had 20+ credits going into freshman year at UofSC. Other colleges have limits, though.

S21 got his scores, he is happy with them.

AP language 5
APUSH 5
APES 4

@SammoJ He can just report the 4s and 5s. S19 took AP Comp Sci class but hated it so much that we told him he didn’t have to study up and take the actual AP test. So, colleges could see he took that class but didn’t report a score. He reported the rest of his APs. I’ve heard AOs say that they do not judge what is not there. They can’t assume the missing score is bad. It’s always possible that the student was sick and didn’t take it or something else happened (like maybe this year it didn’t download the first time and the student decided to bag it - we know kids who did that).

Maybe he could report Lit, Gov, and Stats.

@kanfly I’m so sorry that happened. It really turns me off of Tulane. D had an interview scheduled, cancelled due to a conflict, but may take it off her “list.”

@JanieWalker That cracks me up! You should be honored they want to recruit you, lol. I can’t believe the lengths colleges go to trying to increase their apps. Tulane bombards my D, with me copied for some reason. They have not, however, asked me to apply!!

Congrats to all the kids, on all their great scores! Ok, while nobody hopes for a 3, it still shows competence in the area. At some colleges, the 3 can get you out of things like a Lang requirement. It did for our older S.

With that said! S upset by 3 on Spanish - it was the one that didn’t work initially, then he had to do the retake, still didn’t work till D figured out his phone wasn’t using a compatible platform, then he did it. Oh well! 4, USH, 5, E&M, 5, Mech. D21 - all 4s, Calc AB, Bio, Span. But, she cancelled her comp sci bc she thought she failed it, so no score. Which, if she does self report scores, will probably lead to the conclusion she failed it anyway!

With all the rising covid cases, our state’s cancellation of fall contact sports - including soccer, S’s sport, - the likelihood the kids won’t get to visit colleges, continue any in person ECs or see their friends and who knows now about school (our state is going backwards in phase 1), I’m sad about this being their senior year. And, yes, it’s in perspective, I’m devastated by those loosing their livelihood and lives to this disease. (Ok, maybe it’s time for a therapist …)

@havenoidea @kanfly @3kids2dogs Tulane has such a presence virtually. They have so many options for virtual events and, as we watch them all, I feel like we do get a pretty good idea of the vibe. I would say the vibe still fits D21 and she likes the campus but the admissions office is turning me off. We watched live stream about the TO policy with the two directors and one AO and it was clear that they are only kind of TO. Want scores for merit “if possible” and, when one student asked if they should send their high ACT score, the director could not hide his giddiness. Send it! Of course send it! It shows us a lot about you! Well, dude, this meeting is about TO and likely everyone here either doesn’t have a test or thinks they might get one shot in the fall. We can see you still want test scores.

I will say, though, that the students in the admissions office have been wonderful. Friendly and prompt in returning emails when D sends in questions. I do like that.

Compare Tulane’s TO attitude with a place like Davidson. Their message is completely different. We were flat out told that they don’t care what USNWR does for the grading of them and that they are testing TO for the next three years and are dedicated to trying to make it work. They actually believe that test scores aren’t everything.

@homerdog – good point re: not needing to report all scores. Maybe my S won’t report his 3 on Comp Sci. Will put a pin in that…

We are not supposed to get our scores in Texas till tomorrow, but my daughter was able to see her scores on the CB portal. Worth a shot for everyone who is supposed to get their scores tomorrow or the day after!

D21 got all 5’s on her 3 AP classes. Apush, calc, and english3. Very proud of her getting those scores with online learning beginning in early March

@havenoidea 5s on both EM and Mech…my D would salivate over those scores!!! Absolutely amazing!!!

If D was applying to any selective schools she sure would not send her 2 on AP physics 1, so not indicative of her masterly of the subject.

@Aguadecoco same here, S21 has

Apush 5
Apes 4

Jealous of all of you who have scores already… I am at work and D21 is either ignoring me or still asleep!

D’s at her dad’s.

I checked them with early scores and sent the screen shot to her. I can see she did not check her text, (no read receipt). So I called her to tell her. No big deal to her. I told her we could ask her AP physics 1 teacher to review her exam (allowed by CB this year only) but she said no since she was not planning on using it for credit.

My daughter used a vpn to check her scores today too. Not sure why they just don’t release them all on the same day since it seems “everyone” checks today anyway.

BC Calc - 5
Chem - 5
Spanish Lang - 5
APUSH - 4
English Lang - 3

She was thrilled with Chem and Spanish. She’s taking Spanish Lit this year but may skip the exam because it won’t add anything to college credit. English Lang was expected; she’s ok with it. Taking Lit this year which will give her another bite at the apple.

BC has such a high rate of 5’a that she was happy, but not it was also kind of expected.

She’s gotten three 4’s on history exams, so while she thought she knocked it out of the park, her 4 on APUSH was also not a surprise.

A good day today for her - glad because the school released a more detailed reopening plan and there’s a lot less in person school than she thought and she was so angry.

@3kids2dogs We were able to get D’s scores on the CB website even though Illinois isn’t until tomorrow! And those are great scores. Yea!!

Congrats! Those are some impressive scores and workloads! We are at a small catholic school so total APs available are much lower.

S got a 5 in Bio and a surprising 3 in AP English Language. It’s too bad because EL is a great subject for him. He also did not score well on the essay, but got a 97% on the SAT EL. So apparently we don’t jive with the CB graders.

We will talk to the counselor but I think we will definitely report his 5 and earlier 4, especially since we are from a lesser known school and he might not get the ACT done in the Fall. I don’t feel like the EL is representative of his skills so we probably won’t report that one and hope that the AOs are too busy to notice it missing.

We are thinking he should reconsider applying a bio major but he wants to make money in tech (and likes programming). Of course you can’t put that on a college application.

@AlmostThere2018 sounds like we are in similar boats, though my son only has a 3.87. My son wants to do CS but honestly math is not his strongest subject in heavy application, not grasping concepts. I’d be interested in hearing where you are reading about tech looking for strong writers. When we toured SCU, they mentioned how they tech in engineering school as a “T”, strong science foundation but topped off with soft skills. I especially liked that about the tour.
