Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

Just checked S21’s scores

AP Lang 3
APES 3

Pretty much what I expected

@NateandAllisMom – What my S ultimately wants to do is work in the tech industry on the business side of the house. But he thinks engineering or CS is a better entry point than just getting a business degree b/c you have more credibility. So he doesn’t see himself as a front line engineer or coder – at least for long. He’s very charming and social, and if you met him you’d think he’d be good in business.

He’s very good at math – but just not brilliant. Hopefully that’s enough to get him through a good engineering program, but I worry at times. I think he gets it too, to a degree, as well, and this is one reason he has taken some tippy top programs off his list – like Ga Tech, Carnegie Mellon. and Cornell. He smartly realizes some of those programs may be more intense and difficult than he’s looking for. I think his ultimate career success will be based more on his well rounded acumen than any specific technical skills.

Of course, my husband and I think he’s best equipped for the law, but so far no interest on his part. He’d be a 4th generation lawyer and he’s relishes (and usually wins) a good argument!

I like the idea of Case Western b/c you don’t have to apply directly to engineering so he’d have more flex. But he’d have to get $$ from them to make it possible and not sure how likely that really is.

Also, I think I read that about 25% of engineering students switch majors – so I’m encouraging him to think about other programs at the places he’s considering. He is only half listening to that advice!

@AlmostThere2018 Your S sounds like a great kid.

Cornell looks absolutely amazing as a reach but there is a whole section in the Fiske guide about suicides and how they’ve stepped up the mental health programs. Yeah, doesn’t sound like the place for my S to go in on the low end of the pool. He would prefer something more collaborative and some of these low end ivy schools don’t necessarily have great job placement or starting salaries for CS according to what I’ve looked at. He has a strong interest in natural science so we are keeping an eye on schools that are strong in both.

I’m an attorney too and would not encourage mine to go there. LOL.

You don’t even need to use a VPN - you can change your location in your Chrome browser. They conveniently have SF as an option which is what we did.

Great scores all! I was surprised to see the scores on APUSH - according the CB 46%+ got a 1 or a 2, including my friend’s kid who got a 1. She has a high A in the class and is so upset. She said she didn’t study but she’s shocked at a 1.

@homerdog and others…college advisor i follow on Facebook posted a tidbit about Tulane this morning - apparently lots of pictures floating around showing large parties thrown by Tulane students. She posted a response from the admin basically saying, when we have to shut down and go online for fall, you can blame yourselves.

FWIW, Cornell, in terms of CS rankings, is the highest ranked Ivy.

Just checked AP Scores for my freshman twins…Oye Ve…we have some tears flowing…

Twin A:
AP Bio- 1 (OUCH!!)
AP Human Geo- 2

Twin B:
AP Bio- 2
AP Human Geo -3

The AP Scores do not match up with their class grades at all. Before quarantine hit and school went online in March, both twins were pulling A’s in both classes. The last grading period was P/F.

Their AP Bio teacher was AWFUL…like seriously, I don’t know why that women was allowed to teach that class…so many parents and students had issues with her. She was actually let go, then rehired 4 years later. When quarantine hit, and the twins were still complaining about her I told them there is no use in going to her or the principal again because everything was so topsy turvy as it was.

Twin A is currently hysterical about school possibly being virtual forever, his learning style doesn’t do well with online learning, he needs to be in a classroom being taught…gah, today has been rough in our household.

Anyway…I’m going to go get them some ice cream now to sooth over the upsets…I told them it’s just a test, we’re still incredibly proud of them.

We were in some Dickinson sessions today. In the first, the professors were asked about plans for this Fall in relation to COVID, and they talked about the combination of in-person and hybrid options (and remote for those who were unable/unwilling to be on campus). An hour later, a similar question came up in the campus tour, and the students said they had just gotten an email minutes earlier saying that all classes would be remote and no students on campus.

@Momof3B ugh, sorry it’s been a rough day at your house. Ice cream sounds perfect.

Ice cream for sure @Momof3B , sending good vibes to your boys!

@AlmostThere2018 - my D16 is actually working at a tech startup on the business development / customer success side. She does not have an engineering or CS degree, but that did not stop her from being hired. She literally has a liberal arts degree and one computer science class (CS 50) under her belt. She knows enough about programming in order to have discussions with the end client and be able to tell the programmers/engineers what needs to be done. So, let your kid know that there’s always a path forward, and not necessarily with an obvious degree.

For those of you planning on applying to BAMA. They have pushed their deadline for ACT/SAT for scholarships back to end of Feb 2021. That is great news. Also their scholarships were not decreased the best I can tell.

Weird scores here, but happy as the goal was to pass.

APUSH: 3
APLang: 3
APES: 5

D21 thought she did better on APUSH and Lang, but she struggles with writing fast, so we are proud she passed! APES was a total shocker.

@AlmostThere2018 Your S sounds so much like S19. Has the math and science chops but he’s not an engineer or research kid. He thinks science is interesting and has the ability to learn it but is a people person and a good writer and HATES comp sci. This leaves him in a weird spot. He recently looked at NASA internships and a ton of them don’t require comp sci or engineering. You can write grants or write the reports from the research and there’s marketing and community relations…so much stuff. There are also analyst type positions. All of these benefit from an applicant have quant skills and understanding the science. We are realizing that a STEM-y sort of degree plus internships in positions that are interesting could be the way to go. I think he’d love to work for some sort of start up with an interesting new idea about rockets, bio fuel, etc. Believe it or not, there are a lot of those. Yes, they need scientists but they also need people who can speak to the science and sell their ideas.

So, his LAC experience with a major in math and/or physics but also with a lot of other courses that teach him about the world and how to write should serve him well if his interests stay the same. Also, our 21 kids aren’t even in college yet. Once they get there, so many options open and they start to learn more about what they really like.

@jeneric I’ve heard a few posters now say their student “passed” an AP test. I guess that means a 3 and up? Is that considered passing because certain colleges give credit for 3s? I haven’t checked all of D’s schools but so far none take 3s.

@homerdog 3 is considered to be qualified. UNC system has been required to take 3s. Which class they qualify for and if it will get you out of some Gen ed, I don’t know. 3s also are good enough in FL public.

In NC, schools have to report their pass rate of AP- scores 3 and above. I guess that’s why we say pass.

@NateandAllisMom S21 is at a small, Catholic school as well. Only a small number of available AP courses compared to our much larger public high school. Several DE courses are offered too though as they are through a Catholic university in our state.

S21 is happy with his APUSH 4. He will only take one other AP class next year.

Given all that has been happening, I’d say our 21ers are resilient kids who are tackling a lot under difficult circumstances. Great job getting through the year and the AP tests no matter the results.

@InfiniteWaves yes, the scheduling is hard. Because of 4 year mandatory religion and conflicts, he takes a course at CC in the summer to make room for the STEM classes at high school. He has also been able to take two DEs. I’m not super happy with the school profile because it says they offer 13 APs (some only certain years) but there is no way a student could fit them all in realistically. Anyway, not too worried about that, just impressed that some kids have 5 AP scores - that’s an amazing workload.

@homerdog D’s dream is to land a NASA internship. Any pearls you learn would be very appreciated. Also I follow NASA internships on fb and you are right, so many kids that are NOT CS or ENG get internships!!!

Most of S21’s Texas instate publics will give credit for 3’s.

I am going to tell D21 to bag Tulane because it sounds like Tulane’s obsession with its rankings and exclusivity just continues and is part of its culture now. “Giddy” was the exact word I used to describe the Tulane AO telling a big group of us how much the acceptance rate had dropped …it was almost condescending, i.e. he also made a comment that statistically, only x students in the room would be admitted to Tulane based on that year’s applications. I thought I just got that vibe because of the timing (Tulane had just made its RD announcements when I visited with D19 and was very excited about how many apps it received, etc.). So unappealing compared to many similarly regarded schools. Um, no thanks.
