Parents of the HS Class of 2023 (Part 2)

Clemson had no pluses or minuses. That no doubt helped my daughter have a 4.0. My D21 at Miami of Ohio has pluses and minuses but no A+ which kind of sucks

ditto! most of my kids’ schools have had + and - ; but no A+ = 4.33. @Gatormama - i’d be glad to share some of those ā€œeasyā€ classes.

My first faculty job out of grad school was at a place that does have +/- grades (where the pluses add .3 and the minuses subtract .3 from the base score), and I always thought it was patently unfair that they didn’t allow the awarding of A+ grades (not even an A+ that calculated as 4.0), but they did allow the awarding of D- grades (equaling 0.7).

S23 is home and seems to now be a third shifter. Ugh. Last final is tomorrow online via Zoom for him.

He is dreading the early morning classes next semester. We had a brief chat about rushing in spring and he has changed his top choices there so hoping it will be less hazing and more manageable as he isn’t going for a ā€œtop fratā€.

Meanwhile, lots of talks with D25 and doing a revision of her list. 3.0 kid going TO. She wants a contained campus (number of students matters less than spatial layout we are finding). A campus that looks ā€œniceā€ (somewhat updated or well cared for historic). Diverse student body and not a commuter campus. Wants to still be able to take dance classes (possibly a minor) and perhaps criminology or sociology type major.

D22 is at St. Louis U and is loving her experience. Please feel free to message me if you have questions.

Duquesne in Pittburgh very similar to St Louis U. Mercyhurst in Erie fits the bill as well. Very good criminology forensics science departments

both my daughters’ very different schools use +/- : one is an elite state flagship and the other an LAC in Ohio - for the anecdotal use in this thread

That happened to my kid, too! He was always the lark in the family, up at 6 and in bed by 10, while the rest of us are all owls who complain about having to wake up in the morning and then stay up as late as we possibly can. Now he’s waking up later than the rest of us!

Our S23 doesn’t have his last final until late in the day 3/22 so won’t be traveling back until 3/23.

And no idea about grades. That’s apparently a common complaints at this college based on chatter on the FB parent group and from our son. Unlike HS or our older kids colleges, they have no platform that gives any running averages of grades as assignments come in. And they don’t always know the weighting (varies by class how transparent it was on the syllabus), so even if they did their own spreadsheets they might be speculating. Also, they take forever to return grades. He didn’t get midterm scores back for a month after they were taken for most of his classes.

And even if you get past all that, some of the classes assign enormous weight to the finals. In one class it’s 50% of the semester grade despite them having had graded problem sets every week for 14 weeks and multiple tests and a midterm. So you can go into the final with an A and still end the semester with a C if you tank it. That courses started the semester with over 40 kids, was down to under 30 by the drop period and the second half next semester is down to 22.

We are local to LeMoyne and it’s beautiful! My 2025 is considering it. She’s a diver and loves their diving coach.

Merry Christmas and Happy New year to our 2023 Community!

Love having my son back in the house too! It is like he never left:) We don’t have family close by so we have a very relaxing day. He has been very self sufficient at college and I have enjoyed seeing all happen. HOWEVER, he brought home about 12 shirts he can’t get the deodorant stains out of! :joy::joy::joy: As a mama who LOVES being a mom- honestly washing them clean on Christmas as we all chill together has been a true joy! Congrats on your book:) love the things that bring us joy:heart::christmas_tree::tada:

For a split second my naughty mind read, ā€œ He brought home 12 Girls🤣
That he can not get rid off!
Now you know what writing romantic fiction does to your brain🤣

It also reminded me of a line from one of my favorite song roughly translates to ā€œ One of my laundry bill is a half read novel!ā€ Which I am planning to write soon😁

There is this movie called ā€œ Brad’s statusā€ in Amazon, watch it if you have not watched it already.

My girl has been home since the 16th and she CRUSHED her first semester! She absolutely loves school. She is in the Honors College at Syracuse University. 4.0 GPA - dual major in forensic science and biology. She took honors chemistry, honors psychology, 300 level anatomy and physiology (tested out of the lower levels with her 5 on AP bio) and then two humanities classes. Just so proud of the way she has adjusted to college life. Syracuse is an awesome school - she is surrounded by VERY bright kids (many of which, like her, were rejected from ivies and other T20s) and the college experience can’t be beat!

While happy for all the 2023-ers who are thriving in college, I feel the need to chime in on behalf of those whose first-year students stumbled hard in the fall semester. Surely mine isn’t the only one? Started strong, but soon came up against both academic and mental health challenges. Thankfully he kept us informed and eventually accepted help for the mental health issues. Unfortunately, he was not equally open to accepting or seeking out academic help. Failed a 5-credit course (out of the light load of 13 credits he took ā€œso he could really focus on themā€). By mid-semester he was coming home every weekend. He’s now on academic probation, jeopardizing his merit scholarships if he doesn’t make dramatic improvements next semester. If there is a next semester. Now that the holiday is behind us, we’re planning a conversation with him tomorrow to suss out what happens next. Should be super fun–he’s not very open/talkative in general.

Anyways, that’s our unpleasant reality. I imagine we’re not alone, but it’s difficult to talk about college not going well for our kids in a forum like this.

You’re certainly not alone. My D22 has also struggled, academically and mental-health wise. After three difficult semesters, she is trying to decide whether to continue in a different major or follow a totally different path.

It’s so important for kids to realize - this happens - for many. Yes it’s an exciting time but many do stumble. But hopefully they reset and don’t over pressure themselves.

The success stories are awesome but those who struggle are certainly not alone.

You are absolutely not alone! D22 has a classmate who dropped out of Yale after one semester and another one who dropped out of Mount Holyoke. Both are still struggling to figure out next steps. She also has friends who are still in school but having a tough time.

Wishing the very best for your S23!

Not alone. My D19 withdrew with a mental health crisis in her junior year. She was able to keep her scholarship and even graduate on time (thank god it was a BFA program where she was beloved, and thank god for AP credits) – but it was touch and go whether she would return at all.
A good therapist and medication really really helped.
Hoping it works out for your son, @FunnyPup
