Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 1)

My D24 is part of that 20% at Yale and would probably prefer reject outright as that is how we are approaching it. I cant believe Harvard is still deferring 80%.

If you look at the Yale thread from last year many deferred kids did get through RD and are attending. Small deferral numbers is definitely a positive sign.

It gives a false hope when overall 95% are going to be shot down - so more than 95% of those deferred most likely.

It’s like a WL. Yes, it will work for some but for the far majority, it’s a head fake and unnecessary.

Yale certainly knows they’ll never truly consider a huge amount of those deferred students - they’ll be easy rejects next round. So they rejected them now and that’s the right thing to do.

Harvard and Gtown should do the same - but of course if you’re Harvard and Gtown, you can do what you want and everyone will play ball with you.

I would feel worried, too, if there were a lot of kids applying to the same school. But, anecdotally, S24 goes to a small private school with well under 100 kids per grade, and a number of highly rated schools have accepted up to 8 kids per year from his school. This includes several SLACs with small class sizes. It makes sense to me, though, that you would want to be sure you are a good fit (in terms of stats and otherwise) if you applied to such a popular school.

S24’s HS friends seem convinced that the fact that one of their classmates was admitted SCEA to Yale helps explain why some other strong candidates were deferred.

We know colleges like Yale will at least sometimes enroll more than one of our kids, so I am personally a bit skeptical. On the other hand, I just don’t have the data to conclusively rebut that something like this could play a role in deferrals, particularly not with Yale’s deferral policies having recently been in flux. Still, I remain pretty skeptical.

S24 got deferred from EA and it was expected but still hurt. He already has one acceptance and waiting on more next year.

Do you know how many of those 8 attend? A school might accept 8 in RD, projecting it will yield 2. But if 1 is already accepted ED, would 7 be accepted in RD?

It varies, but four students going to the same SLAC is not unusual.

New parent of a D24 here. She applied EA to
four schools and is hoping to hear from two today (LMU, and Santa Clara). She will have to wait for USC, and University of Utah until early January. Regular decision she has: University of San Diego, Cal, UCLA, Cal Poly SLO, San Diego State, and Long Beach State.

She didn’t want really small and USD (I think)is the smallest she applied to. USD, and Utah are the perceived safety schools (she goes to a Catholic diocese supported high school in the region and has a 3.75+ gpa so that is an almost guarantee of admission).

Good luck to everyone.

I like that metaphore - and will steal it

Great options! Good luck! D24 had EA apps in to Santa Clara, LMU, & USC but got into her ED school yesterday. She would have been happy at any of those schools.

My D24 ALSO deferred but at UPenn. I have no idea if they are more Harvard or Yale with deferrals
 Anyone?

How is your daughter feeling today? My kid is surprisingly unemotional
at least outwardly
but it could be the covid. She didn’t open last night was too sick, got up around 10am–opened portal and went back to bed.

Right now I’m so glad I have one child and never have to go through any of this again
 lol

I haven’t checked Penn but the Y and H stats were in various press releases and articles covering same. Maybe Penn will also do this?

It looks like Penn did not release the statistics, per a policy not to release until after RD:

Edit: Poking around, it looks to me like they may never release their deferral rate specifically.

Good luck to your DD!

Random question - my dc is applying to a lot of the same schools, and we are not in the area. DC was considering submitting a Regular Decision app to Chapman and I see it is not on your list. Is there a reason your DD is not considering it?

Thanks and good luck!

Brown ED results comes out in 2 min. S24 is in school so we don’t know if he will be opening it in school or wait until he comes home. wish us a luck!
