Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 1)

My D isn’t the laundry but dishes. Is it so hard to rinse your dish and put in the dishwasher? Argh!

I need to make sure she knows not to do this with a roommate! Well unless the roommate is also a dish slob.

My S24 who cannot figure out how to get a dish in the dishwasher without being told or wash a load of clothing without me standing over him, claims taht at camp this summer he cleaned the bunk and helped wash pots and pans. Not sure i beleive the cleanliness that resulted from any of those activities but it is a wonder what they do when we are not present, ha!! (By the way my H94 still cannot figure out the dishwasher situation)

One of s24’s schools requires a deposit by mid-February or he forfeits one of his already awarded scholarships and his chances at additional scholarships. We are fairly certain this school is going to be the most affordable but son is not ready to commit.

How horrible would it be for us to pay the deposit, son to attend an advising session, and then decide not to attend this school? I realize we would forfeit the deposit, but would there be other ramifications? Son is really stressed about having to make his decision so soon.

Heads up, this may be of interest to this group. Oregon state Univ just announced they will push back the commitment date to June 1 due to FAFSA delays. I assume more schools will follow.

It seems to me that by making you pay the deposit to keep the scholarship, they know that there are kids who may change their minds after RD comes out, but are hoping to pressure people into it. It’s not different than losing a deposit from taking a waitlist spot later. If you can afford to lose the deposit, it’s probably worth not forfeiting the scholarship opportunities.

Agreed. But such tactics leave such a bad taste. I hate when schools bully students in such a way.

Well, ok now! First acceptance is in! Rutgers-NB! Any Cali kids that got in, S24 got an email to meet 1:1 in-person with our regional advisor. They are doing a Cali tour from NorCal down to San Diego. I do like that they are coming out to meet, that’s a nice touch.

I agree.

If you can afford to possibly forego the enrollment deposit (ie, not get a refund if kid changes their mind), the. I’d go ahead and pay it since it sounds like it’s a lot of $$ to pass up on.

S24 expects to hear from his ED2 school tomorrow, so we are all feeling tense again after the relaxing couple of weeks that followed the last application submission. I had been eagerly anticipating the ED1 decision, but this time I wouldn‘t mind pushing it back another week. I was enjoying the calm!

It doesn’t help that S24 leaves for an all-weekend sports tournament tomorrow before the decision is released. He actually has not yet decided whether he will look at the result on the road tomorrow or wait until he gets back. And I‘m leaving on a week-long international trip on Saturday, so there‘s lots of uncertainty about when and how we will all find out.

Boston schools do NOT know better!! At least Tufts doesn’t…one of their revisit days was the Friday of the marathon last year…and while they are not IN the city/on the route, I’m still surprised they chose a marathon weekend. Fortunately, they had two other days/weekends as well, so we will just have to pick one of those.

Are you running it this year??

We all assume people that work at, run colleges are the creme de la creme of intellect and common sense.

Colleges - administrators and admission departments - make poor decisions just like people in any organization.

We know someone who worked in communications at a well known LAC. They don’t make very much and some people have been there for years aren’t open to new ideas.

I think the Friday before Marathon Monday is a decent time to have an admitted students’ day!

When you look at the options, if decisions come out end of March, you don’t have too many weekends between then and mid/late April (when you‘d want people to have all of their information to make a decision by May 1). Passover & Easter often fall in that stretch too, which complicates things.

Sure hotels are probably going to be more expensive the weekend of the marathon, partly because it is also the beginning of April vacation week here. But, also, the actual air & hotel traffic for the marathon typically doesn’t start until Saturday or even Sunday. Most people I know who fly in for the marathon arrive Sunday and then leave on Tuesday. If you have a visit day on Friday, you are probably arriving Thursday and leaving Saturday or even leaving Friday, which isn’t that bad.

I hung up my marathon shoes in the 90s. My knees just do not like running. And I like to save them for moguls

I have run several, but qualifying for Boston is out of my realm. I do have several friends who qualify and run it every year, and I am very excited to be a spectator over the next few years, now that I can visit D24 at the same time! D24 will probably be less excited about this plan than I am.

Whee, I got COVID last Saturday at a friend’s party. Waiting to find out about the rest of the family. Lovely.

If you are wondering, liberal applications of single malt Irish whiskey are apparently not adequate protection.

That is what I would do, what other choice do you have?

Did you get a Covid booster?
