Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 1)

Congratulations! That’s a great school. And their brand new high-rise dorms facing the Hudson River are pretty awesome too.

More like running bad, bumps also bad. But marathons last hours, bumps minutes at most!

That is incredible! Northfield is such a great community, too.

Me too. Wish we could just submit the CSS since it’s done.

They sometimes surprise you. My daughter went to Ringling College two summers ago for a summer-long art intensive. She is my least (very least) self-sufficient child as well as emotionally needy, so I was worried. Didn’t hear from her once, and picked up a different person at the end of the summer. She really thrived on her own.

I wonder if it is because they are on a quarter system and don’t start school until the end of Sept. It will be hard for the schools on the semester system starting in August to wait until June 1st, IMO. Not impossible but that is a short turnaround.

Any suggestions for hotel for visit to UC Boulder.

I think we stayed in Broomfield - wherever points went well (ie a reasonable amount). A HIE - like 15 minutes away…and it worked fine.

We used to live in an apartment in Broomfield when I was a grad student at CU-Boulder! Back then, people thought it was ridiculous to live “way out there” instead of in Boulder. Now everybody has to live outside and commute in, due to the costs. Burghdad, I hope your visit is great–it’s a wonderful place.

Wow. My in-laws live there and when we visit we always hit Boulder. Seems like quite a commute to attend school there but I hear you re: costs.

My sister worked in Colorado Springs and lived in Denver. She was young and single and Denver had more of social scene 20 years ago. But those drives were terrible, she carpooled with a group of people and they had some hair raising winter weather stories.

Droid1 got into CS at Michigan CoE. Since you all were gracious enough to encourage me to double dip, here I am!

Can I celebrate here some of my kid’s acceptances? There is no other place for us to do so due to an uncommon series of schooling/sport circumstances.

We were not sure of what the application landscape would look like, so there were some early action schools and a bunch of RDs (no ED!).

So far: Colorado School of Mines, SDSU, UMich, GTech, VTech, USC. We have another Cal State and four UCs to await, along with some reaches and potential matches. No idea where kid will end up; will have to do some visits.

Radically different process than when I was graduating high school! With apologies to The Bard, “they come to enroll it successfully in academia, if successfully then happily in academia.”

100000% yes! Congrats!!

ETA: our school has a fairly strictly observed yet 100% unofficial don’t ask-don’t tell policy. And no school sweatshirts before early April, more or less. And most kids wait until they commit. There may be a sweatshirt day on like May 1 IIRC. All by way of saying I totally get it, and love having CC as a place to pop the cork!

Congratulations on a fabulous set of choices for your child. It’s a good problem to have! :tada:

Very kind of you to say so - thank you. My spouse has one set of criteria, my kid another, and I am all about “most bang for the buck.” All schools applied to are there for a reason and “approvable” in theory, but final packages will be where we really get down to brass tacks.

Kid’s school counsellor and teachers have been very supportive (in individual conversation). So that’s great.

It’s in my kid’s sport where things have been rough - highly competitive environment with a small but determined socially aggressive cohort that want to eliminate the competition. Not for the faint of heart.

That’s very sensible. It’s an already stressful time for the kids, at least this makes it a bit easier. My DS24 got deferred from U Chicago, USC, UMich, GT, admitted to Northeastern/LMU/U Oregon… the wait continues.

Here’s to your son finishing the season with options he’ll thrive in!

Well, Virginia has been good to my S24. Following on the heels of his likely postcard from W&M, he was just accepted to UVA. After starting off with rejections from Brown and UNC this was just what he needed.
