Daughter sent me her ‘vision ‘ for her dorm decor last night. White bedding. All white. Yeah not gonna happen.
Highly recommend gray
This will be us in Norway this summer…already planning on packing lots of snacks!! Especially since 3 out of 4 of us are not very adventurous eaters, and I’ve heard Norwegian food is…um…interesting!!
We have been trying to get to Norway for many years (DH’s family is from there), and I figured this may be the last summer D24 is available for 2 weeks.
After buying a white couch because it was so much cheaper than all the more colorful versions (not once, but twice…the second one said the cover was washable…but not so much), I always encourage the purchase of medium-dark brown furniture and linens.
Ha I think it’s all a plot from Dormify to sell more bedding… We would likely replace it within a month!
If your child is someone who can wear a white dress shirt or white dress without getting it stained or spilling on it - the white bedding for college stands a chance of surviving.
Those people are rare indeed.
Ha! Since my kid washes all of his light and dark items together…he ends up with lots of gray.
He opted for gray linens to start with…genius!
When I went to Norway I looked for “American” type foods. I found a hamburger place that was great and a pizza place that was ok. You’ll love it! I loved Norway.
Yeah mine will eat in bed and loves catsup and blueberries. So at least the bed will end up looking patriotic.
I recall reading some study where it turned out darker earth tones hid the widest variety of sheet stains. Not sure about cocktails specifically, but that is more a grad school thing anyway.
Do you have a plan for a kid who as soon as a visible smudge appears, he will change outfits and hand the old one to Mom for immediate washing?
Asking for a friend . . . .
I was an exchange student in Stavanger on the west coast. Been there and Oslo a couple of times with DH and DS. The food isn’t crazy, good fish. There is a good coffee scene in Oslo. It is very expensive, particularly alcohol.
We will be in Stavanger for a night! Will definitely check out the coffee scene. D24 and I don’t eat fish/seafood, but I’ve heard the hotel breakfasts are amazing, so she and I will likely use that to our advantage!
re: laundry in college - necessity is the mother of invention. Standards of clean will change. As will washing frequency.
Can’t help you there, but if it makes you feel better I know a certain kid that walks around with stains all over his clothes and thinks he can wear it again the next day
Thinking about a new phone or iPad.
He also wants to go for a senior trip we said sure as long as its in the US. They have not yet finalized so will see if they go or not.
Ran into some confusion & a little drama re: getting answers to a general question of “How do we set up a payment plan for the college’s fees, tuition, R&B?” Drama was between me & DH because:
a. I’m a detail person
b. he’s a big picture person
c. we could task D24 w/making the phone call to the college on her own but
d. DH would have a million more questions he’d want to ask financial aid or payments office resulting in more frustration all the way around.
So D24 and DH made the phone call together, got routed to business/payments office from financial aid. Got the info we all needed. Great!
Then DH went to explain it to me. He talked 90 mph, messed up the details in the retelling of the story of “how you set up a payment plan at the school,” made it sound really confusing. I asked for clarification while looking at him like he had 2 heads. Then cue triggered DH, lots of loud grumbling about “It’s so simple, how can you not understand?” followed by retelling the same messed up confusing details again and throwing in what was supposed to be a simplified example…meanwhile I’m thinking, “Where is he coming up with a $1200 fee? That’s not in their list of tuition & fees.”
Us parents ended up yelling at each other. I retreated to elsewhere in the house for a time out from my dear husband while he continued to jabber on and on, only this time to nobody because now D24 had left the room, too. So he was basically talking to himself.
then had to compose myself and get on the phone for a work meeting.
That was fun.
Afterwards, D24 explained it. And guess what? It’s not complicated. So why did my DH have to explain it like a bumblebee with ADHD buzzing through a field of flowers?
Kid’s explanation:
We will never know. Whew. It’s not even 5:00 pm yet and I’m ready for a cocktail.
Probably a new laptop, she’s been using hers for 4 years of HS. Many of her friends are doing “senior trips” to Europe or other far-flung places with either friends or family this summer, but she’s headed to work at camp, and leaves a week after graduation. I’m glad she and I got to travel together to France last summer, can that be considered a year-early graduation gift (lol)? We are trying to decide how to fit in a quick and fun family trip before she leaves for camp, or during the 2 weeks in August between camp and college move-in.
D24 talking about dinner…if it was a color, it would be gray.
Apparently not a fan of the food or the color gray. sigh
Can’t live with 'em, can’t send them to college…ohhhhhh wait…
