Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

I have a plan for you. Community college, lives at home, smudged clothes handed to mom still an option. Obviously super #1 over Carleton and WUSTL right?

We are heading to Far East Asia right after graduation. S24 will stay with grandparents for 6-8 weeks while the rest of us are coming back after 2 weeks. He is excited about getting laser pimple scar removal… apparently, his dermatologist told him to get the procedure over there because it’s cheaper and better. Does that count as a graduation gift?

We took a wonderful family trip to Norway in 2015. My one and only trip to Europe in life. I hope to return one day! Bergen was particularly beautiful. Stavanger was also lovely. Enjoy!

Just a heads up that some of the schools where your child is admitted but chooses not to may keep you on parent mailings. It’s been 2 years but Tulane still sends us requests for money, announcements about parent weekend…. I unsubscribed from the emails but still get paper mail- just got one today.

We are going to switzerland too! for a wedding… and everyone except D24 can make it. Frustrating. We are super excited… we will neither have cheeseburgers nor helicopter trips though.

Uh-oh . . . had a bit of a cold feet convo with S24, who is suddenly not so sure about having narrowed it so fast to WUSTL and Carleton. Is now asking about possibly visiting Vassar.

Regular readers of NUM’s Amazing Stories will recall that I originally tried to pitch a Vassar visit and got a big ā€œNah,ā€ but apparently it just took until after I had locked in all our other plans for my persuasive powers to kick in.

Unfortunately their two Admitted Days conflict, but they have plenty of other visit days for admitted students, but he still has that Senior Project thing where he can’t miss too many days, so he has to check with school first, but in the meantime . . . back to the travel sites for me.

It was clearly going too smoothly. S24 just keeping your skills sharp.

True….with a slight twist for us:

My son was admitted to UF for Fall 2021, but chose NOT to attend UF; and is currently a junior elsewhere.

Surprisingly, he has received multiple mailings this year from UF Alumni Association asking for donations.

I save them for him and tease him.

(Hubby and I are Gator alums.)

2 years ago, my daughter attended the Iowa Young Writer’s Studio at the University of Iowa.

Last year, they sent a request from ā€œalumniā€ asking for donations to help fund some well deserving kids selected for the summer writing program. We sent them some $ but now we’re on the donor list???

If they gave us some Caitlin Clark autograph items, we’d consider it. Otherwise, we have zero connection to the school.

I’ll send you $5 if you can somehow manage to fly through DTW again. Make it happen.

I thought I could pull it off, but there are too many direct flights between St Louis and NYC!

The great thing about visiting Vassar is if you play your cards right you get a day (or night) in NYC to go with it. My kid loves Vassar - definitely worth a visit (though sounds like WUSTL has really nice dorms. Vassar decidedly does not, though the buildings themselves are lovely).

Pretty sure my cards are low and offsuit. I somehow have to plan a weekday in Vassar without losing more than a school day or interfering with weekend sports.

I guess I just have to contact the Girlfriend to see if she wants to add anything . . . .

Are these CSS or FAFSA schools?

One of D24’s acceptances is making me crazy because there is apparently no way to decline the acceptance in the portal, and no unsubscribe option on their emails. D24 already blocked them on her email, I just grumble mumble and delete, for now, hoping it will let up after decisions are closed.

This is true for 2 of my son’s colleges too. :sob: He had no problem just blocking them, but I feel like it would be rude. (I’m pretty sure that makes me an old lady.)

You and me both! Pretty sure the college admission process has added at least 4 new gray hairs.

Very much in the same boat. D24 is the eldest of our 4 kids. She picked Japan. Tokyo here we come! Returning broke but grateful for the memories we will make before she leaves

Have you looked at st. Remind hotel? We used points there for 2 rooms. Includes breakfast and happy hour with drinks and snacks. Lovely stay and good location. We are Marriott points users!

4 days for Colgate and Emory, 2
Days for Vanderbilt, two weeks for
UVA and Richmond. Nothing from Georgetown. So random
