Bates food options - downtown Lewiston: Forage (bagels and coffee - closes early though), Baxter’s (brewpub), Fishbones (seafood), DaVinci’s (Italian), Orchid (Asian/sushi) - I’ve been to all and had good meals. On campus - The Den (grill options, salads, snacks, coffee), La Ronj (student-run coffee place on Frye - I haven’t been but the kids love it), Dairy Joy ice cream stand (if nice out), and the main dining hall is called Commons and has everything. If it’s in between meals, or late at night, there is also Gritty’s pub on the Auburn side right at the river.
Fun (maybe not so fun?) fact about Baylor. They didn’t allow on campus dancing until 1996. This was 12 years after Footloose came out. Reputation is they are a conservative religious school. Not sure if still true. Good academics.
Sports teams punch above their weight. Ok football that’s on the decline with Dave Arranda. Basketball team won the national championship during COVID, competitive in Big 12.
I’ve heard good things about Ocean Blue and The Tailor and the Cook, both in Utica; Nola’s, in Clinton, offers a collegiate feel; the region is known for pizza, with O’Scugnizzo Pizzeria as one good example.
Second Dairy Joy! It’s the best soft serve. Commons also has excellent soft serve - pic from our visit a year ago -
Well, S24’s finally day of regular classes has finally arrived. Tomorrow, all seniors in good standing have their final regular day of classes. Then beginning next week, they only attend school for their AP classes, otherwise they are doing senior project. S24’s is at a business that only opens at 12 so he gets to sleep in, go to one class, then do his internship in the afternoons. He is also working at a restaurant 3-4 nights w eek so he will be very busy. Graduation is end of May
Unfortunately that Mangia Macrina’s is out of business (the original in Little Falls still exists) - they had a fire and haven’t rebuilt.
The only US airline that flies into Stewart is Allegiant. So you can get from Stewart to a few smaller airports in southern vacation destinations (Myrtle Beach, Punta Gorda, St. Pete’s).
There are also direct flights to Iceland, that connect on to Europe, on PLAY airlines.
I think pre-covid it had more airlines.
On my list of things to consider is the “pain in the ass quotient”. I’m willing to pay a lot more to eliminate as much PIA as possible.
Thus, for me, whether to catch a subway, train, cab, or car, the ease of getting myself and traveling companions to a place on time and with as little stress as possible is the priority (whereas my 20 year old self would look to save a buck).
That said, driving may or may not be easier. If the rental car lot is AT the airport, and you choose national, you just walk up, choose a car, and go. Drop off at the same spot. However, if the lot is off site (e.g., Sixt at LGA and probably all other rentals) you are looking at a shuttle plus possibly standing in line at the counter.
But, having a car in Poughkeepsie gives freedom of movement.
Simply catching an Uber from the airport will be more expensive (I haven’t checked the cost), but would be much quicker in most respects. An Uber back relieves the stress of having to fill up the tank and getting from the lot to the airport.
I would imagine the costs would not be shockingly different.
If you guys are going to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, message me. I have my workbook from end of 2019. Prob still legit.
Anyone considering buying a home or condo near where your kids go to college with the idea they can live there when they move off campus? Build equity etc… Good idea or no?
Your profile is private but we are hitting all three of those if you want to send my way!!
We were discussing this yesterday!
What do you think?
Macalester actually admitted women at a higher rate than men in its last CDS. Men had a slight admission advantage at Emory (12% vs 10% ish). So the fascinating thing to me is that somewhere like Macalester just ends up with a similar gender balance to Vassar, but does it without giving any admissions advantage to men. In the Vassar CDS from the same year (2022-23), women had around a 15% admission rate compared to 25% for men. So, yeah…it’s just weird to me that Vassar has such a hard time shaking its womens college rep more than 50 years after becoming co-ed.
Nope
It probably depends on the market but the thought of buying a house seems very unpleasant. I hate living in a house because of all the upkeep, maintenance, and repairs. I will NEVER buy a house with a pool again. Seemed like a great idea at the time - kind of like a fried Twinkie at the Texas State fair.
The biggest issue with condos is the maintenance fees. Plus, if you have a neighbor that smokes and/or is loud, barking dogs, etc. you cant just walk away. Special assessments could be another hidden cost down the line. Also, unlike a house, there could be multiple units on sale at the same time, so if you’re in a bad real estate market, it could just sit there or become a race to the bottom.
Plus, the tax laws are stacked against you on a second home. If you have a gain, you’ll have taxable income. If you lose money, you don’t get to deduct the loss against non passive income.
I don’t think I’ll be hired as a marketer for the National Associate of Realtors.
These are great points. You forgot to mention the interests rates suck!
But with your initials, one might think that you serve your clients as a fiduciary…
