Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

What was your final impression at Emory? For S it was another college visit that confirmed his original take…music is good, overall culture too pre-professional for his tastes (“everyone here has one major they do for fun and then either pre-med or pre-law”). He has no patience for people who actually want to find JOBS after college :joy: So…I don’t know. He says he hasn’t ruled it out and would perhaps like to get in touch with someone in the English department about sitting in on a class. I’ve reminded him that they do HAVE stuff like English and Art History, even if they have a lot more biology majors.

it’s ridiculous but you’re not alone! Please update when you get the final packages - your daughter’s story is really compelling, and I’m glad that it worked out so well!

Well, D24 had already committed to UGA, so we wanted to make sure she wasn’t writing Emory off unfairly. It is not the school for her–various things that were said in the presentations were so foreign to her, like the counseling people warning parents that students would have a meltdown when they received a B minus on a test–or telling parents not to contact faculty about their student’s performance. She has made straight As in high school, but might get a B this last semester. We have always talked about how foolish it is to be obsessed with external validation in that way. Emory seems great for people who aren’t into being “young adult” in the way that I was. It seems like they’d use the freedom of college to get further ahead in life rather than to explore random experiences. She had a negative encounter with a small group of students, but because it is anecdotal I won’t describe it here (it had to do with people talking about universities they got into). Other than those faculty presentations that were good, it really seemed like a “bubble” environment–some students thrive in these situations, but I think she would be stifled. (p.s. I edited this sentence because I think I might have been speculating about people’s personalities without real knowledge of the vastness of the human condition).

Glad it reinforced that she made the right decision! I think S24 is kind of the opposite of your D in that he seems more convinced he prefers the small LAC environment after today. Which makes UGA’s persistence in his top 4 a little incongruous. But he really does love the music school there. He kept running into people from his youth wind symphony today, which was funny. I think that group might be as close as we’re ever going to come, as homeschoolers, to the whole “feeder school” concept! Anyway, Amherst next week and then we’ll see where things stand.

The visits families are able to make before and/or after acceptances can really impact where a student finally chooses to attend! My kid really got a lot out of talking to current students on campus to hear their particular experiences.

Yup, sunny too. It’s going to be warm at the track meet tomorrow. You might see people taking prom photos in Forest Park tomorrow. Don’t forget to go to the Delmar Loop. Have fun!

DH said the same thing after S24’s visit to WPI this week. One of the professors to the MechE program was so boring while the robotics prof was very dynamic and engaging. these unis need to consider first impressions and all…

Is this the first time this thread has lain dormant for almost 24 hours?

D24 had a meeting w/her senior project advisor yesterday after school. They’ll all be doing 20 min presentations on their projects.

I messed up my knee and now my back is sore thanks to overdoing it with shoveling 20 yards of Chip Drop mulch to the backyard. I’m down to about 1/3 left of Mt Mulch. My neighbor appears very irritated with me based on the increasingly dirty looks I get from her as she drives by watching my shovel and sweat. :joy:

Have any of you followed this guy on Instagram named Harlan Cohen? He has very practical and helpful advice for HS and college students.

Here’s a pic of part of the backyard…

D24’s BFF is going on a trip to visit Univ of Richmond at end of next week, paid for by the college. She didn’t win the full ride scholarship but did get 1/3 off tuition but I don’t think it’ll end up affordable in the long run. It’s a bummer because she desperately wants to attend. Her parents have told her that they won’t be paying for any of her college expenses. But because of her parents’ income level, she won’t qualify for much aid. It’s a lousy situation to be in. She’s an amazing kid. I just want to give her a big hug and to tell her that everything will work out in the long run. It’ll be ok. But it’s so hard when you have your hopes on something and it might not be something you can afford to do.

Seeing her friend go through all this has been a big reality check for D24. She’s a bit more…grateful, humble now.

Hard to believe that graduation and the prom is in about a month!

Successfully made it to Poughkeepsie after a day in St Louis. Car rental experience in Newark was actually excellent! At some point when I am not completely exhausted I will do a detailed writeup on WUSTL’s admitted day, but overall it went well despite an obviously unexpected protest disruption.

Today’s weather is typical year-round  I’m happy that you’re able to visit whatever your son decides. Is it a sign that their teams are the Brewers? :beers:

Your backyard looks amazing!!
I love Harlan Cohen! I follow him on insta. It turns out he was showing up in my feed because D22 was following him! His advice is so honest and spot on.

As we move into the final phase of the pre-college process we are leaning into his 3Ps: finding the People who can help S24 and the Places where S24 will be welcome for who he is (no app/audition) while he exercises Patience until he feels at home there (and makes true friends).
