Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

Clayton is a nice area to stay in for Wash U.

Thank you so much! Our current question is how she might be able to connect with current physics undergrads to get their insights on first year classes and the Gateway Expeditions into Exoplanets & Black Holes Ampersand program. Please let me know if you have any ideas!

We may be a little biased, but D24 and I think he’s made an excellent choice!

First of all, congrats!

Second, I’m breaking your embargo by around 12 hours to say that if your household is anything like ours, it will soon be very not relaxing!

Congratulations!

In the Fall Welcome agenda for Bear Beginnings, they’ve tentatively scheduled Farewell with Your Family from 3:00pm to 7:00 pm on August 18th.

The link to the agenda is on this page: Bear Beginnings: Fall Welcome | New Students | Washington University in St. Louis

I think the amount of time parents stay can be related to how far away you live. We moved S22 in on a Wednesday and did a shopping trip Thursday. I went to a parent meeting for the band Friday and left Saturday morning. After Wednesday, I only saw him a bit - mostly to drive him around. We did have dinner Friday night. But his roommates weren’t in yet either. We are 850 miles away, so no stopping in for a Target run or anything, and he didn’t have a car. I’ll probably do something similar with D24, as she’ll be 650 miles.

I clearly need to set aside a quiet hour and a vat of coffee! I did not know about this yet!!! THANK YOU!

At my school, we have scheduled a ‘first class’ for students on move in day specifically to create a hard stop “you can go now” moment for families. For my kid we will drive down the day before and stay at a hotel, and drive home after drop off (only about a 4hr drive.)

ND makes it a family affair for 2 days with programming and socials for parents and caregivers. Same for football weekends. I think this family focus along with residential college systems is their secret sauce to such a strong alumni bond. The programming at admit weekend was top notch.

In theory I love it, but my introvert self doesn’t always wanna!

More than a drop … this is a celebration! Get trippy.

D24’s college will have an ice cream social/send off for families at 7 pm on move-in day. Families are expected to leave after that as new student orientation begins that evening. We live over 1000 miles away and my husband and I will spend that night at our hotel and then drive 6 hours the next day for a mini-vacation in a part of the country we’ve never been to and look forward to seeing. Then we’ll fly home the following week. It will be our inaugural vacation now that both kids will be in college and we’ll be empty nesters!

I will admit I find the taste of absinthe a bit challenging. I generally like the taste of wormwood and use it as my primary bittering agent in my homemade bitters, but the strong anise flavor of absinthe can easily overpower a cocktail for me.

Ah, I agree with this. It’s best on it’s own, honestly. In NOLA we had a great bartender who guided me towards one that was less anise-y that I enjoyed. However, I also break a cardinal rule and drink it on the rocks (after properly prepared - I just ask for a glass of ice).

WashU makes the move-in experience family friendly. This year’s programming looks similar:

There is dorm specific evening program for the residents on their move-in day. A family reception will be held concurrently, but for the rest of the day, you can help support the move-in without significant student only programing that leaves the family with nothing to do.

On the 18th, there are scheduled sessions for the parents/family in the AM, with the school asking families to say goodbye in the late afternoon.

The week long student orientation starts on Monday, August 19th:

Exciting times for your family. If you have any more questions, ask away!

This made me check. Ours will be 818 miles by car. Also in a town we very much look forward to exploring. So I don’t mind staying on a bit even if we barely see the kids if at all after ‘official’ drop-off.

Part of my absinthe-in-cocktails problem is the cheapskate in me cannot stand a rinse–like I am literally going to pour this expensive liquid down a drain? Really?

So I have settled on using an eyedropper which I believe gets to a similar quantity of taste. In other words I am basically treating it like a bitters, and that has led to some cocktails I have found interesting but not overpowering.

Few more days left of D24’s senior project before this Saturday’s final presentation! I ordered a bunch of dorm gifts for her off of Amazon yesterday for graduation. Got confirmation from my SIL of what dates she’ll be here in town for D24’s graduation. DH proposed to SIL that she & her 15 yr old DD consider going to parents & family weekend in Oct. to visit D24 and SIL said she’s really interested in doing that. D26 and our niece are 3 months apart in age. Niece is on the high functioning end of the autism spectrum. SIL is planning on having Niece live at home and go to community college first before transferring somewhere. I personally think that a smaller college like D24’s could be a good fit for a kid like Niece, so it’ll be a cool experience for Niece to see what on campus college life is like. Niece will probably spend a night w/D24 in the dorm over whatever the parent & family weekend is.

My DH had a temporary case of the “I forgot’s” yesterday. For some reason, he had it in his head that D24 would be paying for all of her plane tickets to come home for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and spring break next year. Even though we just talked about it 2 wk ago and last week, I consulted with him before I started to purchase Thanksgiving and Christmas break plane tickets for D24.

Then he got it in his head that when she goes off to college, we’re totally removing her from our car insurance. Um no. That was never part of the plan. We’ll do what my parents did when I went off to college…we’ll call our insurance company and tell them that she’ll be out of state at college and won’t have a car with her. And then our rates will probably drop a little. When she graduates, we’ll take her off of our insurance.

We stayed in Clayton last year. There are quite a few hotel and restaurant options in Clayton and it’s only about one mile away from campus.

The WashU Olin Business School has a hotel (Knight Center) on campus, but it’s currently all booked for Freshman move-in days. Good to keep in mind for future visits if you want to be on campus.

We are staying on the Delmar Loop near a restaurant and used record store that S24 loves. Thanks for the tip about Clayton and your advice about the move-in weekend. We’re excited to explore as we are from the northeast. Our sons wanted a far-from-home adventure and they are each getting one. First drop off is the weekend before, second is WashU. I think D26 is going to fall in love with WashU. It’s one of the few universities with a real art/design school (that has her desired area of focus) and a top-notch biology program, which is the combo she wants. But I know better than to say a single word in favor about any of it!
