Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

And we have a decision ahead of the deadline! D24 will be heading to Washington University in St. Louis (Washu / WUSTL) to study Physics and Philosophy of Science.

@lkbtnc thank you so much! I am sure that I will have questions and will definitely reach out.

And in a shocking last-minute twist . . . just kidding, S24 officially committed at WUSTL!

It really took on an air of inevitability by the end. His favorite first visit, almost his ED2, clearly the most excited when he got admitted (even D30 saw it), great second visit, the more he learned, the more he liked it . . . no real doubt in the end.

And now I finally get to just relax all summer, right? No answers for 24 hours, please.

Congrats and welcome to the WashU community! As parent of a WUSTL Freshman and a member of the Alumni and Parents Admission Program (APAP), reach out with any questions.

Move-in day is 8/16 or 8/17 so book your hotel rooms soon (assuming you and the family are dropping him off)!

Welcome from a fellow WashU parent! If you have any questions about the school, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Move-in is 8/16 or 8/17 so start making your travel plans.

Great choice and so glad it feels right for him in so many ways! Curious what cocktail a decision merits?

Perhaps a newly created one called a “wash u down”!

One of my S24’s is also headed to WashU in the fall and we are so excited. Reservations made. Planning to stick around to the 18th so D26 can fully check out the school and area but it just occurred to me that maybe that’s not cool for a parent of a 24 to do? Maybe the 24s want parents to set up the room and then gracefully vanish from campus? Since you obviously did a WashU freshman drop off last year, what do you think? This is our first-ever college drop off, so we might be making some unintentional mistakes (just like in the application process
let’s just say many lessons learned there).

Colleges generally try to usher parents offs with a day of drop off so kids don’t have distractions from diving into orientation activities. If you want to show the campus to your younger child, parent’s weekend will be the perfect time. By that time, your older child will hopefully be fully integrated into campus life and wanting to show off their new life.

Based on S19 and S21
 vanish.

I think it’s totally fine if YOU want to stay to explore St. Louis (and there’s so much to do in St. Louis), but don’t expect to be hanging out with your college kid after drop off (and perhaps a scheduled event for families later that day if there is one).

These responses are so helpful in helping me adjust my thinking around what this weekend might actually look like/how I should handle w/D26. S24 and I are very close. We do so many fun things together (don’t worry he also has a ton of friends etc!). I am not ready for this (obvs!). Maybe I better try and move my hotel reservation from the loop to downtown

I’m not even going to mention what I had in mind for a name, because that is infinitely better!

In the spirit of their Ampersand programs, I am thinking of trying out a variation on the Golden Glow, which is one of Missouri’s signature cocktails, and is a Bourbon & Rum cocktail. To make it a little more WUSTL, while it already calls for grenadine (red), I am thinking of adding a drop of absinthe (green) as well–which for those of you who know your cocktails is a Monkey Gland thing, and S24 in theory is interested in Bio . . . .

We’re toying with adding a day after dropoff to just see more of St Louis with D30 (like, she was complaining about the Arch-less nature of our whirlwind admitted students visit), and to rest up more before the drive back. But yes, our expectation is S24 will not be joining in any of that.

congratulations! My older son is a sophomore at Blair, and he LOVES it. Like, he’s the kid who signs up for every opportunity to talk to prospective students about how much he loves it. Hope she has an amazing time!
