I have said this many times, I am a doctor and there is no reason to pay a lot for undergrad if you are interested in any health science. If USC was a much better fit for her and she is not 100% convinced on some aspect of medicine that is one thing, but if she is fairly certain, take the full ride!
I second this. A good lock really only deters the casual bike thief. I have a very nice, very expensive bike that I only use when it can be stored inside a locked car or garage, afterwards. I have a beater that I use for tooling around town and locking up at destinations.
thank you for spelling this out. D24 took the full ride(free tuition, room & board) option over a $200K expense for a health science UG degree.
@OregonMom2024 your daughterâs BFF should strongly consider Wiscoâs offer given that itâs a state flagship and flagships typically donât give full ride to OOS students.
I was there for an evening meeting and had been there for an evening meeting about the same in April each of the past two years. Maybe it filed up in the past two weeks - my kid is still on the fence between three, perhaps four, schools.
This 100%. D24 is our last one and I am looking forward to an empty nest.
A campus police officer once explained to me this is like the bear thingâyou donât have to be able to outrun the bear, just the person you are with. So if you are on a campus full of bikes, and you are properly using a proper lock, likely if a bike gets stolen it wonât be yours.
Off campus, though, that logic could change.
Anyway, right or wrong I am pretty sure we will be giving it a shot while S24 is living on campus.
S21 picked up a nice bike secondhand off Facebook Marketplace when we were en route to Cornell for a summer internship (forget the brand ⊠specialized?). He got it for a song and it has served him well. And yes, we chuck it in the back of the Outback.
I must have had a neon sign saying âsteal from me!â flashing above my head because I had so much stuff stolen while I was college-agedâŠa purse (at the movie theater), a fanny pack (traveling), backpack (traveling), and yes, a bike (off-campus). 4 different states!
I tell D24 all the time that you donât own stuff, it owns you. Living in an oldish house in a state where weeds seem to grow a foot a day drives home this point to me almost every day HA! I am hoping she will be able to see the appeal of starting college with a well-planned minimalistic room setup, not holding my breath though.
Thanks! Great idea.
The Instagram page for daughters school has 40 announcements (class of 400, assume 300+ are college bound). The Ivy/top 20s are well represented but the rest of the kids are yet to decide.
My kidâs school is the same - out of 125ish there are ten posts, and most of those are from ED/recruited athletes and were posted months ago. My own hasnât sent hers in because âno one else hasâ so itâs also self-perpetuating! Even the kid running the page hasnât posted her own yet!
I dont know how reliable those pages are to decide who has committed. My S has no interet in posting on instagram and there are many others who feel the same.
Ours is a bit of the same. Class of 560 only like 30 IG announcements and they are mostly for OSU and U of O ~ not ivys.
I am sure this is true every year but I also think the ones who would post are not because they havenât made their decision yet.
Our high school moved the âwear your gear on May 1â event to âWear your gear on Jun 3â because so many have been unable to commit yet.
Our HS is taking their group sweatshirt picture today, and if they were not committed they were supposed to do their best guess!
This was our experience w/ D22 as well. Better relationship as she matured. So glad to read about your S22!
Ours got moved, too, but not sure to what date - they graduate June 2, so there could be some kids finishing their senior year without committing based on some schools deadline extensions!
On the bike topic - I had my kid put a bunch of stickers on their bike to make it less sell-able. They also bring it inside over long weekends and breaks.
For decisions, my â24 doesnât have financial aid packages for the UCs yet. Not sure if others have it? Her decision luckily didnât come down to offers but itâs still an ongoing disaster. Our high school doesnât do any public college decision posts or dress days.
Today during lunch period was supposed to be seniorsâ âreverse ditch day,â where they all go BACK to school in person (they havenât all been there in person since about Feb 9th). They were all supposed to be at the front office at the start of lunch period. D24 was the only person to actually show up.
To say she is mad is putting it mildly. She went because she wanted to spend time with everybody in person.
D24 needs to complete an online French assessment test prior to her college advising appointment on 5/28. Austin College said itâs about 90 min long.
** edited to add **
Principal/head of school is so mad that sheâs going to bark at all the other seniors about it during senior project presentation day tomorrow. That should be interesting.
