Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

20 more to go – yikes!

It might be observed that there was some over-applying in droidland.

ETA: in fairness to the droids, 4-5 each are UCs. They only count as 1 right? Right?

Same issue with the NUMskull–wait, that’s probably not a good nickname. NUMerator? NUMerologist? D30 just got into coins, so she is a NUMismatist . . . .

Oh, right, S24 is just a NiceUnparticularBoy, aka NUB!

My kid has a clear favorite (only 1 of 5 decisions in yet) but we were hoping to rank the others based on costs when decisions come out. Unfortunately with the FAFSA delays (ours further delayed due to some signature error) I’m guessing my kid will need to start figuring this out before we know the final price. We know general ideas from the calculators of course but institutional grants and scholarships could tip the scales of two otherwise equal choices.

First we got the 2021 COVID cycle now the 2024 FAFSA fiasco, luckily I only have two kids.

So weird. We are in Atlanta for the break and my phone was fine but S24 had no service for hours! All good now.

Ms S also gets the same reaction to Williams, either oh how nice or WOW!!!

Today was a busy spot in our doldrums. S24 had an interview (Tufts). Then he got an email from CWRU that the major he applied for (Systems & Control Engineering) is being discontinued and will only be a minor going forward. Then he got an email from RIT about a status update (he wasn’t expecting results until mid-March), and he was admitted!

He’s still waiting on 4 schools (if he is still counting CWRU?!). We’re also visiting UMass Amherst this weekend. It is probably the school he has gotten into that makes the most sense (cost/distance/reputation -wise) but he hasn’t visited yet and I don’t know how he’ll feel about it.

My oldest is at Vassar and got similar reactions. We eventually started responding “It’s a small school in Poughkeepsie” to the blank looks.

We dealt with this after D24 got into her ED1 school. She is at a very competitive school, and about 1/3 of her class will go to an Ivy/or Ivy equivalent. Even though it was obviously her first choice school, she worried that she’d aimed too low, and that her friends and classmates would give her a hard time. We reminded her of all the things she loved about the school, and reminded her that what she does during her 4 years (well, 5 for her program) is more important than what her friends think of the school. And we encouraged her to follow more of the schools instagram pages (the student life page, the dining hall, clubs shes interested in, the page where admitted students introduce themselves), and we bought a LOT of merch. By the end of winter break, she was really excited about her choice and started connecting with other admitted students. When anyone asks us about her college (a lot of people in our area aren’t familiar with it), we explain that she did a great job of choosing a college that fits her needs, it has a program that allows her to have a lot of career flexibility, and we know she will be really happy there. I think sometimes it just takes a little time for them to be comfortable in their decision, even if they thought it was exactly what they wanted!

Im pretty sure D24 will bring her two lifelong loveys with her to college (she currently has them with her at boarding school), but if she chooses to leave them at home, I will likely melt into a ball of tears. This pic of Bear Bear is already making me tear up a bit!!

People haven’t heard of Vassar? :face_with_spiral_eyes:

S24 is still waiting for 4 schools since he applied RD to them. The others on the list which he was already admitted. Now he is just waiting for more info on extra aid like from Honor College, or scholar events he had participated for either a chance for full ride, or more $$.

Currently he has four schools on the list he really thinks he very likely will not attend, even though one of the schools has the lowest cost (a few thousands a year comparing to $30k to $40k) and he would be in Honor college. He just didn’t like it because it is a big in-state public school, while he prefers smaller LAC. (Honor college there is like a college within a college! However, he just wouldn’t budge, :sob:)

I feel lucky. We are only trying for Tuition Exchange schools so if they haven’t heard of the school I just let them know it is somewhere we can go for free tuition or discounted tuition. That usually quiets the masses

Many of smaller LACs are regional, so people outside of the immediate area might never heard of them…

Here in Central TX, almost no one heard of Goucher, Loyola, Vassar, Colgate… etc. If you mentioned UT Austin, SMU, TCU, Steon hall, UCLA, Harvard, Duke, everyone was like… Oh Yeahhhhh!

People have not heard of a lot of things!

I had a sort of semi-awake dream once of a game where you would mix together LAC names and never-President-Vice-President last names, and people would have to guess.

The equivalent of the Golden Snitch would be knowing Calhoun was also once the name of a residential college at Yale . . . .

I don’t think they have out of the northeast. And no one heard of Wesleyan until Lin Manuel Miranda. Ha!

My D24 is waiting on her last three, one is tomorrow and we think the other is also but not 100% sure. They are of course her #1 and 2 top choices. The third is a deferral which through portal astrology looks like another acceptance but won’t be official until next week. I can not express enough how happy I am that the waiting game is coming to an end! lol

I went to W&L and am regularly asked here on the west coast if that’s a bible college.

I am from the west coast and have heard of it. Maybe I learned it from all the “Gossip Girl” episodes I watched in my younger days. :joy:

Without a doubt, the majority of people where I live, have never heard of Vassar.

ETA: Actually, I believe Vassar was mentioned in Gilmore Girls once…so they probably HAVE heard of it, but probably didn’t realize it was a real college.
