Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

Hope everyone in Houston area is staying safe and the graduation ceremony can be rescheduled as soon as the cleanup is done.

Congratulations to all the graduating seniors!:tada::clap::heart:

We are still 6 weeks from graduation-S24 has one last AP to take next week and then is basically done with HS. Have no idea what they will be doing in school for the rest of the time. At least, I don’t have to feel so guilty about pulling him out of school for a few days for a pre-graduation trip to Iceland.

Turns out our school does do a senior assassin game. Found out to our surprise when we had some kids running through our backyard! S24 is the last one standing in his group but will likely be taken out today.

Fun times ahead!

S24 finished yesterday. He had his last final for a DE class at 7:45 am and then did 2 optional Calc 3 assignments because I told him it would be good to be familiar with the concepts for his engineering classes.

Since he is homeschooled and we fell out of touch with most of the organized homeschool activities due to COVID, we’re not doing any graduation ceremonies. At some point we’ll take him out for a nice dinner. Honestly, he isn’t a big fan of food, but he shot down all our other celebration ideas. :woman_shrugging:t2:

Today he did placement testing and filled out most of his college forms. He needs to do some practice for his driving test in 2 weeks…and he’s pretty much at his leisure for the summer!

So the prize ceremony was very cool. I was particularly touched when they brought up military officers to appoint the two seniors who are heading to service academies (Navy and Air Force this year), and the rest of the seniors spontaneously led a standing ovation (in fact the only one of the ceremony as the norm is otherwise to treat all the kids/awards equally).

I’m pretty sure UNM sent a message saying your daughter will be admitted with a scholarship, but needs to still fill out the application and send transcripts.

UNM doesn’t require an enrollment deposit.

Congrats to your son for the award!

Shockingly, College Board is waiving the $40 test fee for the AP Chem retake! I think so many parents complained that the school pushed back and College Board gave in. There never should have been a fee in the first place but happy with the outcome. Now just hoping D24 can motivate to study one more time for the test.

She had already submitted an application and was accepted. That school didn’t make it to the top of the list though. Shes committed elsewhere. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hoping this week is the week for our final college decision! One of the schools has delayed needing a decision until June 15th but that is just too late. At this rate they are going to allow decisions a day before move in

On an exciting note headed to watch my D run at our state track meet. :running_woman: :running_shirt_with_sash: :athletic_shoe:

Ok so as it turns out my some miracle, graduation happened as scheduled! They actually tried to un-cancel rehearsal yesterday about two hours before. Many families still do not have power. And getting there was an adventure because SO MANY traffic lights are out and it seems many people do not actually want to treat them as a four way stop.

But the girls are all graduated and it was lovely!

ODD scampered off at 4 pm today to meet up w/her senior class for group pictures and then they’re all going to eat somewhere together for dinner and then to the prom from 7-10 pm. YDD has 1 more week of school. Yahoo!

It’s prom tonight here as well. We got some great shots of S24 and the whole group before they all left to take more pictures at some of the parks nearby. Perfect weather.

Here are some reports from the kid about tonight’s prom:

  • “Mama, Mean Girl 1 is now dating Boy X. Ugh, why is he dating HER?”
  • “Oh, a bunch of them got drunk at Boy Y’s house before we all met up for pictures.”
  • “And get this…Mean Girl 2 is now dating Boy Z. What the heck is wrong with him?”
  • “Oh, and Mean Girl 1’s older brother bought them all alcohol for everybody who were at Boy Y’s house. And they all showed up in a limo together.”
  • “Oh, and Mean Girl 1 was super mega drunk and Boy X was sober and Boy X was basically babysitting all of his drunk friends.”
  • “And none of them are going to the same college as each other, so good luck with that in a couple of months when you all head off to different places, but whatever. Seriously, Boy X and Boy Z could do way better than those girls.”
  • “I wanted to hang out with everybody one last time and they all kind of ruined it.”

I just listened. Didn’t have the heart to tell her she’ll encounter a heck of a lot more drunk people at college. She’ll learn soon enough. However, I think tonight’s festivities did make it easier to part ways with a lot of them.

Our HS breathalyzes everyone before prom and other similar events. One friend of my S’s was incredibly worried he would be refused entry to the grad night event because he had a glass of champagne with his parents when they did a toast at lunch after the graduation ceremony (fortunately it had worn off 5 hours later).

Honestly that sounds like the first year of my law school. So much drama!

We’re on a 36-hour mini trip with D30. Started with a lacrosse tournament yesterday morning but we extended to a one-night stay in a hotel so S24 could have a sleepover with friends last night. This is all he wanted for a graduation party, and we have successfully done this many times before (nosy neighbors help), so hopefully it was fun.

D24 heads off today with her class for their 3 day senior retreat. I’m just so happy that they get to have this experience together, a great way to end her time in HS and something her sister didn’t get to experience when she was a senior 3 years ago during Covid times. Less than 2 weeks of classes until prom, then finals, senior dinner, graduation. She’s also chosen this busy time to start dating someone new, because why not? Ah youth.

It was also S24’s prom night yesterday. No detailed reports are in yet, but early intelligence suggested it was good. No known drama. Graduation is 3 weeks out, but his college’s initial course selection is due in a month! So that’s something he is looking forward to!

We had a wonderful time in Providence and so thankful for the one-on-one time. It was nice closure to the process after this emotional rollercoaster of a year. Will take all the necessary steps to make it official soon.

As someone that said school colors matter very much in part 1, can’t believe we landed on :brown_heart::heart:!

S24 is at senior grad day/night at Disneyland. Very SoCal thing to do. lol Disney does a special grad night for local high schools, they keep the park open until 3 am for them.

Yep it’s the “You just graduated high school what are you doing next?!”

I’m going to Disneyland!
