Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

Disneyland has a lot of grad nights!

When I was in HS in Northern California decades ago, the senior trip was to Disneyland. Took all day to bus there and it started after dark after the park closed to the public and went all the way until dawn. They used to have relatively big at the moment bands playing at various venues around the park too.

This is how t was for me too! Our grad night started…at night at Disneyland after hours. But now they give them from 8 am -3 am.

That’s great! I don’t follow all the grad nights, just the one that pertains to us. I wouldn’t know.

We did the same from my Bay Area high school in the 90’s. As I recall, we also went to Medieval Times (jousting and dinner?).

We are headed into the final week of school which doesn’t seem possible - all AP tests are done and I think S24 has one small project to finish and that will be it. He finally deposited at UVA so barring some last minute WL action, he’ll be headed south this fall. Unfortunately, my dad passed away last week after a brief bout with cancer which has taken a little bit of the excitement away - we are all sad he won’t be here to see S24 graduate but grateful to have had him in our lives (he was in his late 80s) for so long. Glad to see so many of your kids celebrating their successes and looking forward to the next step.

I am so sorry to read that your father just passed. What a tough loss at an already stressful time. Hugs to you all.

But also congratulations to your son on committing to UVA! What a wonderful school! Everyone we know who has attended absolutely loves it and I am sure your son will have a great experience. To me, Charlottesville is one of the most beautiful places in the country.

One month until graduation here! S24 has three research papers due in two weeks and I am guessing they will not be of any quality. Aiming for Cs. Ha!!

I did that way back in 1990!

Terribly sorry to hear about your dad. My mom passed last May and it is still hard.

As for your S24, thank you for sharing his journey with us this past year. He sounds like a wonderful young man and will do well at UVA. Congrats to him!

got D24’s TB test read at dr’s office this a.m. She’ll be uploading all of the remaining health forms online through the college’s health portal today. She learned this morning that the senior college counselor is leaving at the end of this school year. I’m totally bummed about this because she was amazing and I still have 1 kid left to go through all of this.

In classic college-parent news, I can report that we’re planning to buy a new (but again modest) car before D24 leaves, since she saved us so much money that we’re sending her to college with the much-loved car she drives. However, we won’t actually buy a new car until July, because if they don’t give her one of the campus parking permits (and they aren’t unlimited in number), we would just have three cars sitting around when we only need two! Nevertheless, we’re going to drive a prospective new car tomorrow. Since it’s a compact, we need to make sure that very-tall-and-big husband feels comfortable in the cabin. This counts as fun, since we buy a car about every seven or eight years. :grinning:

The winds have shifted a little and I did a little trip planning stuff for our week-long trip to Oahu in July. Lucked out and was able to get 4 tickets to the USS Arizona Memorial and made a dinner reservation at Monkeypod across the street from the Aulani (where we’ll be staying for the latter 4 of our 6 nights). Other than going to a luau on I don’t know what date yet, we’re just going to wing it for everything else. Hoping to hit up the Aloha stadium swap meet and the Bishop Museum. D26 wants to see all of the museums at Pearl Harbor, so that might be a 2-day thing depending on how things go.

Has D24 taken the french placement exam yet? No.

We were there last summer and totally worth it. I think our favorite thing about Honolulu was the daily morning Malasada lol. We enjoyed the Shaka Guide App as our road trip personal guide.

what do kids need in college in terms of credit card (parent vs own) and debit card?

My kids have a card of ours - and both now get more offers for their own cards (and big cards) - and one is still in school.

If you put them on your credit card, it appears to build their credit as the bills are paid each month.

I don’t think they need their own - although it’s ok - and certainly not a secured one.

In our case, I’m paying their bills - so this works for us.

S24’s spring team won their third place playoff game (again not bad after moving up a division to play much bigger high schools). But by far the biggest sensation was the deer who wandered out onto the field during the half. And as if it knew, it wandered back off in time for the second half . . . .
