I finally got around to buying D24ās renterās insurance.
Two weeks from today will be the first time I wake up at home and she will not be living here. We are trying to squeeze in so many lasts before she leaves. Sheās a big David Tennant fan, we are trying to finish the end of Jessica Jones.
@laceltris would you be willing to share what renterās insurance you went with?
Did she watch Good Omens? Staged?
I think State Farm is popular here but we just moved to Lemonade.
Also have your agent check your home policy. Our sonās apt was actually covered by our home policy - no extra insurance needed. We just needed a note for the apartment stating this. For some reason not my daughters - it may have been location or distance from home specific.
Insurance should be $10 a month or less.
We went with Gradguard. I reduced the liability amount, because sheās also covered by our umbrella policy, but am just happy itāll cover her computer and other possessions with only $100 deductible.
I know itās probably also covered under our homeowners policy, but companies are pulling out of our market and are dropping customers right and left, so we have a really strong preference to not file a claim.
@OregonMom2024 We didnāt attend Cuse parents weekend this year because the date was inconvenient and our kid was happy for spouse to visit a couple weeks later. We were a little bummed to miss it, but our kid didnāt mind at all. Weāre skipping this year too.
Weirdly, we DID attend Purdue parentās weekend because they were playing Cuse. We brought sonās Purdue friends to the football game and watched some of his other friends play in the marching band (Cuse won ).
FYI, we were surprised to learn that itās legal for underage kids to drink with their parents in NY, so thereās a lot of totally legal family partying going on even with the freshmen during parentsā weekend.
Same in Ohio!
And same in NJ. Letās just say the grad parties have beenā¦interesting!
As for our progress:
D24 is almost through her checklist. Just needs to upload a photo for her ID and weāre awaiting the health center review of her forms/records to make sure weāre all set there.
Most items have been purchased. I really did not go nuts with stuff. D24 doesnāt seem to have much interest in thinking about it at this point, and I figure once weāre setting up her room, we can always do a target or walmart run if thereās something she desperately needs/wants. We have all of the basics covered. Weāre using D20ās empty bedroom as the staging area. Hoping to take everything in our sedan, but do have MILās SUV available as a backup, should we need it.
I enrolled in a payment plan and scheduled out the four payments for fall semester. First one goes 8/15 We will be using saved funds as well as cash flowing her education, so day-to-day wonāt feel too different for us (allotting a significant chunk each month for ed costs). I remember when we finished contributing to D20ās account and began the draw downā¦THAT felt weird and unsettling.
D24ās first friend leaves at the end of next week. Itās definitely starting to feel more real for her now.
S24 has FINALLY reached out to his assigned roommate, so maybe some sort of coordination on room stuff will be kicked off soon.
But at the moment, it looks like we are going to be hauling a bunch of bedding, clothes, and sports stuff, and have a day set aside for shopping as necessary.
Mine is still waiting for room and roommate assignments and she is apparently the last of her friends (except one) to get this info! The one who hasnāt heard yet is Colby bound and allegedly they meet their roommates on move in day and donāt get info beforehand. (This is 3rd hand info, so I canāt confirm it to be the actual case myself!) She has just about everything, under four weeks left, and 3 of work. Sheās ready to go.
No roommate info here yet, either. Supposed to be coming on Wednesday. We did our main preparation for his departure today by getting his wisdom teeth out. Move in isnāt until the 27th, which seems very late, but Iām happy to have him around a little longer. In the meantime, we need to move his brother back to Nashville on the 17th and his oldest brother is flying to Denver to start grad school tomorrow. Weāll still have the 11 year old left, but itās going to feel really weird being down to one lone kid.
Maybe LACs do this the same way? No info here yet on housing, should be in another week or two.
They have said āfirst week of Augustā so she is hoping itās this week (and like other general dates through the admissions process, they will reveal āearly.ā)
I was warned early on in the Amherst parent Facebook group to expect everything to be very slow all the time
Yes. It seems Williams and Amherst do things the same way, ha!
D24 doesnāt hear about roommate until Friday!
D24 heard about her three (not a typo ) roommates a few weeks ago. There has been a little conversation in a group text, but not a whole lot.
Then, the other day, two of them notified the group that they got off the waitlist for themed housing, so would not be rooming with them. Quick as you could say āmaybe I wonāt be stuffed into a quadā, two new names appeared in the housing portal. D24 reached out, but again, thereās not a whole lot of back and forth happening. Sheās just going to wait until move-in and see whoās actually there before getting too attached.
No news from Bowdoin yet about roommate and dorm assignments. I believe S24 is supposed to hear this week.
Wesleyan room assignments come Aug. 9. Class schedules just came out late last week.
