Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

At Stanford, you don’t find out your roommate assignment until you show up for orientation! No coordinating happening here. DS may find out his dorm assignment sooner, but it hasn’t happened yet.

D24 had some Adventures In Adulting today. I went along for morale support, but waited in the waiting room during her appointment. Things that The Child learned today about healthcare:

  • sometimes the front desk/check-in people are really nice.
  • sometimes the front desk/check-in people are really grumpy.
  • it’s important to remember what your mom said to you about maintenance medications have to be filled through the mail order pharmacy, not a retail pharmacy.
  • it’s easier when you remember about the mail order pharmacy thing to just go straight back into the doctor’s office and tell them of your mistake than to drive home and attempt to call and deal with all of that nonsense from home.
  • you should check how much $ is on the HSA card before you go into the appointment so you could have paid the $100 copay out of the HSA card instead of out of your debit card and then have to get reimbursed for it later on.

Next lesson this evening: checking your student financial aid/payment/bursar’s office account to make sure that everything shows as paid for when you start college next month.

It’s no longer Adventures in Babysitting, but Adventures in Adulting. D24’s feedback so far from today? “This sucks!” :joy:

Unless Stanford has changed their housing assignment process, he should find out his assigned dorm in August. That was the case for D21 at least.

One week to go until we leave for move in. D recently adulted by filling out her request for a mail-in ballot, and I told her to make sure to do it 100% correctly and legibly, since in our state they try to make mail-in voting as difficult as possible.

We have done the same. Just visited another time when we could actually spend more time with our kids than we would have during Parents Weekend.

S24 is going to UVA and he already has a roommate and dorm assignment (and they have been in some conversation - i.e. who is bringing a fridge). I’m debating about whether or not he needs a comforter for bedding or if a quilt will be sufficient. S22 didn’t use his down comforter once in his two years at UMass - he got by with just a quilt - and I’m wondering if a quilt will be sufficient at UVA? I don’t know if I’ve shared this, but I’m dealing with sending two kids down south - S22 is transferring from UMass Amherst to UNC Chapel Hill. The move-in logistics are “interesting” . . .

For what it’s worth, we’ve never even thought about unpacking the car during the night we were at a hotel on the way to move-in day. This is literally the first time it’s ever crossed my mind. (The Midwesterner in me must be too trusting, but we’ve done it 7 times so far.)

Yes, same lots of places.

Also not planning on unpacking the car, save for a bag with the laptop/meds/valuable stuff.

Same. We might also take the bike inside.

Did not know that! I can see some fun coming

Another school in the area is moving in on the same date, so I imagine the hotels will have lots of packed cars, and ours will probably not be the most enticing one!

We have unpacked when taking S21 to school when the car was in a city parked ont he street, but have not when it is in the hotel lot. We will not for S24 since we will be in a small college town in the hotel lot. But I am used to NYC where you cant leave anything in the car!

I think of all dorm rooms as overheated, so I would think a quilt would be fine. If it isn’t, you can always ship down something warmer later.

Ok now I’m trying to debate whether to rent a car or just uber it all. Planning to send most of S24 stuff straight to the dorm but will be bringing his clothes with us and some other small items. Do you think that during the move-in period, the availability of ubers are affected?

Where will you be?

Chicago :grimacing:

I am sure you can find an Uber in Chicago.

well yeah, but I found that ubers in Chicago were way less reliable than San Diego for example. Like a 5 minute wait time would usually be more like 20 minutes because drivers kept cancelling. Wondering if it would be worse when thousands of people descend on the area because of college move in.

I can’t imagine many people will be using Ubers for move in.
